I've been coming to Holod's for years. I love their process of ordering your salt. They have very large bags of calcium chloride and other different types of salt that you may need as well as other hardware items. they have a plant section and you can even get rental for equipment, tools and party things. One stop shop. The staff is very knowledgeable about inventory. Steve was very helpful today as well as the ladies at the front counter. If you have any questions about the type of salt or any other item you need, are able to help you. Once you make your purchase you go out to the side yard with your receipt pull up, give the workers the receipt, pop your trunk or open the back of your tailgate and they will load your items for you. I absolutely love that because sometimes I'm not able to bring a strong hand to get these big bags of salt so this process is perfect. read more

We've rented inflatables/moonbounces from Holod's several times now. This time we decided to pay for delivery, since the whole setup and take down process is a lot. (Getting it out of our car and rolling it into our yard: NBD. Rolling it back up and lifting it back into our car: hell.) Delivery time cited: 10 am. Called at 10:20 am: Told delivery window was actually 10a-12p. Called at 12:15 pm: Told that they'd be on hand soon, they didn't realize we had an "early party." 12:37 pm: Inflatable delivered. 12:40 pm - 1:00 pm: Spent the last 20 minutes before our party started frantically getting the inflatable into position, futilely attempting to stake it (no tools provided and ground hard as rocks), hooking it up to electrical and water, adjusting position, etc. Boy, do I wish we'd asked for more details on what the delivery fee entailed! All we got was that it was delivered out of their truck! Not unrolled, not moved into our yard, not staked, nothing. And then we had to roll it up ourselves post party and move it back to where they'd dropped it off. I'm not faulting the delivery guys, but it was 100% a waste of money. The only thing it saved us from was literally lifting the inflatable into our trunk and the driving (which is the easy part!). Plus, being on their timeframe gave us a lot of unnecessary, last minute stress right before the party started. I think we'll go with a different company next time. read more

This is my closest nursery and garden plant place to my home, so I frequent it often. It has a gorgeous large variety of shrubs, plants, annuals, and garden architectural decor. Yes, the plants are over priced, but they are what you would consider to be a gourmet of nurseries so the plants are in excellent condition. They have been paid extra good attention and you're supporting a local business instead of going to a superstore. Inside the stores walls they have amazing items for purchase. Perfect for gifts or hard to find meat items for your garden and home. If the pricing was lower, I would probably go there more often but since it is a local family owned business, their pricing can only go so low. read more

This is all based on the nursey/plant area. A great alternative to the big chain stores. The only cons I can think of is that the prices are definitely higher than what you'd find at a Home Depot or Lowes and one member of the floor staff was a bit grumpy during a brief interaction. But everyone else was very nice and the prices seem to reflect the higher quality/variety. What I definitely like about Holod's is the MUCH wider variety of plants. We have been trying to build a native front yard garden and nearly everything on my list was stocked at Holod's. Granted they were mostly hybrids, but still it's nice to be able to go some where locally to get plant species that I normally have to purchase online. Will likely be back for more plants and for what seemed to be a good quality pine bark mulch. read more

When I moved to the neighborhood I was excited to have a landscaping and hardware place so close. And yet every time I buy something here I walk out actively angry at how much I paid. I would love to support a local business over a big box retailer, but I just paid $85 for three plastic sleds and I can't ever do business here and not feel like an absolute sucker. I tried ordering a pile of mulch once and it was like $500. And I've never really had a positive interaction with anyone who works here. I recently visited the garden center and was impressed with the variety of plants. I bought a lavender plant despite it costing more than double than other garden centers. It died in the original pot the day I brought it home. I planted it and hoped it would come back but it has not. They won't do a return or exchange on plants so I will not make any plant purchases here in the future. read more

This isn't my first destination for most things, but we check out the plants every year and we do buy things from here. My dad would joke around with the workers when I was younger, but he stopped going there over some sort of rental issue. They dropped some machine off, started it and left. My dad did some work, turned it off and couldn't start it again. Being mechanically inclined, my dad knew what was wrong and told them parts were faulty. They said he broke it and held his deposit. He used to go all of the time and taught me that sometimes you should pay more to support a local business. He hasn't returned since. My wife and I still go, but just for lawn care. Flowers and some shrubs. The prices are a bit more expensive, but sometimes you could get a deal. The staff are sometimes hard to come by, and are usually not too verbally friendly. Flowers are kept outside and you pay inside. On occasion, I'll come back with my receipt and they boxed everything up for me. It reminds me of the typical Philly attitude, so I don't really care. read more

I've driven by Holod's 1000 times but never really thought twice about it. Then I decided I wanted to start building my own furniture (horrible idea) and every time I went out to Lowes with my 30 questions I could never find anyone to help me. Finally I decided to scrap Lowes and not even try Home Depot and instead try a smaller more intimate shop instead. Holod's had all the supplies I needed but more importantly I could explain what I was trying to do and the staff showed me what I needed and gave me tips. RUDE and DISHONEST I rarely take the time to write a review and most of the time I am motivated by a positive experience. But not this time! I just had the most shortsighted exchange with a business owner I have ever had, only to realize that I was really dealing with a deceptive and dishonest person. BEWARE of any dealing with Holod's involving their rental contracts. They say one thing to you in person upon rental but get you when you return the rental based on what they actually put in the rental contract. Shame on me for not reading the fine print. When dealing with an honest company you shown not have to read the fine print. Additionally, their people are rude and not customer friendly, which is clearly a culture that comes from the ownership. HOME DEPOT and LOWES are only a couple miles away. Save yourself the aggravation and drive the mile or two. read more

As someone whose house is under perpetual renovation, I know a thing or two about hardware stores. After my earliest visit to Holod's, I assumed I would never come back, but, alas, their convenience of location often trumps all else. Though, I will admit that they have gotten a little better of the years. Here's a summary: Things I like: - convenient location (halfway in between Lowe's and Stanley's, it's the closest option) - prices on tool rentals -- surprisingly cheaper than Home Depot - you can rent anything from a bulldozer through party gear (cotton-candy machine or BBQ trailer!) - they have a nice guy or two (out of like 100) who work there Things I loathe: - prices can easily be double Lowe's (yeah, yeah: I get the mom-n-pop vs. big-box ethos; whatever) - workers often follow me around like I am going to steal something (and I would like to think that I am not a suspicious looking guy) - one of the workers, quite a brash fellow, responded with an ebullient "F**K!" when i described a difficult renovation situation and asked for advice. While not particularly helpful or informative, at least he is passionate and a modern orator of sorts. He only adds to the aesthetic of the place, really. Went here to rent a tiller. Walked in and no one said hi or acknowledged my presence. When I finally got the equipment rental guy to talk to me he made it clear that I was an inconvenience to him. I asked about renting the tiller for delivery - his answer without looking at me: "that's not gonna happen." A little bit more of this "friendliness" and I finally asked him if I should just go somewhere else because he seemed like he didn't want to help me out. His reply: "why don't you do that." I'm not a jerk. This was really weird. I guess these guys are doing so well they can turn away customers. Looking elsewhere for the tiller and also the dingo I am renting. I contemplating between one and two stars but one star is pretty fair. Let's start with their astronomically high prices: I once ran out of bug spray that I had bought at Lowe's for $3.xx. I went to Holod's because it's up the street from my Dad's and they wanted almost $14 for the exact same bottle!!!! That is just plain ridiculous! Yeah I get the whole mom and pop thing but you know what? They have like 100 people working at all times. They're not helpful and usually look miserable. I'm not going to pay almost five times for something so Mr. Holod can employ his brothers, sisters, children, cousins, and everyone else he knows. -2 stars for prices. Organization? Just plain forget about it. The store is perhaps the most unorganized store I have ever been to. Their stock is usually pretty beaten up and the same thing can be found in several places throughout the store. I once went looking for fireplace tools and was sent to three different areas. Two were in the store at opposite ends and the other was in the gift shop. The 45 guys working at register in the gift shop looked at me like I was nuts for asking if the fireplace set would be over there. I informed them they I was sent over by some of their other 50 relatives and then one remembered that they had a "special" catalog where they could order me a really nice brass set for like $300. I ended up getting a very similar (perhaps exact) set at another True Value for $40. - 1 for organization and another -1 for their prices. This place is a rip off and the only reason they stay in business is because they rip people off. read more

This is by far the best of the nursery garden centers that I have found in the Philadelphia area. The selection and health of the plants is excellent. The people in the landscape department are knowledgeable and helpful and friendly. They have a good selection of plants and good supply of soil, mulch etc and a very easy and efficient system for loading it into your car. The bags are not soggy and dirty. Again, the people helping load are friendly and helpful. I go here mostly for plants but if I need something from the hardware department I will get it while I am there. Again, the hardware people are friendly, helpful, and knowledgable. I have learned many things from them about different products and they are patient in helping you find things. The ONLY complaint I have about Holod's is that some of the people at the cash register are grumpy and not helpful. In fact they are so grumpy that sometimes I just have to laugh (to myself). Holod's is my local hardware store, and I have often stopped there first if I need something. Floor staff are quite knowledgeable and helpful. However, I am posting a warning. Recently, as I was standing in line to pay for some items, the customer in front of me was not wearing a mask properly. The cashier voiced support for not wearing masks in the store. Well the good thing is they were the one of the only places with Rock salt and ice melt. The bad thing is they are taking full advantage by charging 4x the normal price. A 40 lb bag of mix is $31.99, 50lb bag of rock salt $17.99, and a tiny bag of ice melt is $15.99. Usually a bag of the would sell for $6 - $8. Did I buy? Yes. $17.99 is much better than someone falling on my property (especially me) and suing me. Are they price gouging? In my opinion....it depends on the price they claim they paid for & to have salt/ice melt shipped from Canada. I hear suppliers of salt are charging astronomical prices and are being accused of price gouging. Trickle down economics at best. No recommendation or condemnation at this time. This place is G-d awful. How can I say that? Well let me tell you don't ever go into this store for paint. Maybe you need something else, maybe the staff is polite on another day, maybe they aren't so disorganized, maybe they would dust once in a while..... I guess I could go on, but you get my drift. I went here because a friend in Lancaster painted her house a gorgeous color, and since I didn't want to play around with perfection I went to a TRUE VALUE store for the same color. Because Home Depot and Lowe's do not have this name brand on their computer and can't match it that way. WELL- Holod's must not sell a lot of paint because the chips on the brochures are so old that they are curling up. And when I asked to see my color, lo and behold the sample rack was empty. The paint person tried to help. He really did, but he must have been new? Didn't work in that department? Whatever. He called somebody over who barked an answer to him and left. They don't refill their sample rack. And wouldn't you know it they DON'T have a color wheel. And have them mix up a sample for you? UH UH! You have to buy a full pint at $10. I got sooooooooooooooooooo frustrated I walked out to see where the next True Value store was located. But they didn't answer the phone. So I walked back in and purchased the $10----sample. I took it home and liked the color, but I wasn't going back to Holod's for it. So the next day I start searching True Value's in the area. Go to the first one only to find THEY DON'T Sell paint at all. Onto the next one--------------------you are not going to believe this.........................they were out of eggshell and satin base paint. You know that is equivalent to a grocery store being out of lemons and lime's. If I'm not too upset about it I will go and Yelp them also. A W F U L !!!!! And why the heck do they have a turnstile? to enter the store? Too bad for any other True Value store that some positive attributes. read more

We bought 2 Japanese sky pencil shrubs from Holods this past winter to decorate the front of our house. The shrubs died over the winter, so we took them back for a refund. The shrubs were outside the return window, but Holods helped us out with a partial return anyway. They were very helpful even though they didn't have to be. We would go back to this family owned hardware store. They have an extensive selection and comparable prices to big box stores. read more

I bought half a cord of firewood at Holods and wow...what a mistake. The wood was pricey, wet, mostly softwood, some from an apparently long dead rotted tree, and they wouldn't forklift it into my work van because the helpers were told via walkie-talkie, "vans can't take the weight". They only forklift into pick ups. What does that mean...vans can't take the weight. The weight of the wood is the same whether you load it by hand or by fork lift. Clearly the manager was too lazy to hop into a cold forklift on a chilly morning. How about the time I rented a ditch digger only to have to drive back because the gas tank was empty even though I was told it was full. When I asked for a break on the rental price, I was snubbed. Or how about the time I went in for a 1/2 inch copper 90...OUT OF STOCK! I always go out of my way to support local businesses but these yahoos aren't worth the effort read more

Went in there looking for a solution to removing/killing mildew in the shower. I asked the two cashiers (neither of whom were ringing anybody up) if they might be able to help me. They were nice, but the one told me to use bleach (which is wrong) and called for assistance, and the other told me to make a right, a left and another left. I ended up in the cleaning supply isle, and after about 5 minutes of reading product labels, didn't really see what I was looking for. As I was on my way up to the front (to leave) some man asks me what I need, and then does that thing where he tried to make it out like I was crazy but he was going to help me anyway... He smugly hands me a bottle of Tilex as if he is the next Messiah, and when I said I was really looking for more of a mildew killer/blocker than a stain remover, he told me to calm down and took me to two more completely different locations in the store that had the products that I was looking for. I said, as nicely as I could muster, that I didn't think I was uncalm at all, and he tried to lighten the mood by telling me an offensive woman joke. It was very uncomfortable and I actually walked up to the counter with the product and left it there on my way out the door, because I did not want to have another confrontation with the man. I went directly to Stanley's, where I was walked right to the product and told how to use it. BTW, it was less money at Stanley's, too. Although I do not shop in hardware stores a ton, this is not the first time I have been treated poorly at Halod's. But, it is the last. read more

Rented a drywall sander from them for 2 hours. The guys had trouble switching it on when I picked it up. Dropped it off and they gave me a receipt. Three weeks later a charge shows up on my card. They said I broke it. I asked them why didn't they say anything three weeks ago when I brought it back. Louis said it's not their policy. So three weeks later they try to sneak a charge by me on a piece of rental equipment that could of been rented how many times?? All of which could of been avoided by a simple phone call after I returned it saying there is a problem. But Louis stated to me again "that's not our policy..." A phone call could of save the argument, the yelling, a bad review, and the loss of a customer. read more

I generally like to patronize locally owned businesses and don't mind paying a premium to do it. I've actually found the sour attitude and unhelpfulness at Holod's to be entertaining, as it is so over the top. But after spending thousands of dollars at Holod's over the years, today I needed help and was basically slapped in the face. About 6 weeks ago, I bought two small shrubs, each for $51. (Ridiculously expensive, but they were the kind of thing I was looking for. And I was trying to support this local business.) I planted them immediately next to one another and kept them watered. One did great, and the other died immediately. Clearly there was something wrong with it, because its twin was (and is) thriving with identical care. About 3 weeks ago, I bought another one of the same shrub from Holod's, as I needed two matching. Another $51, but I figured I would return the dead one. The replacement shrub is doing great. I put the dead one in the bucket. Today I drove to Holod's with the dead shrub (which still had the Holod's tags on it); I also had my receipt. I was directed to an officious young snot who had a look on his face like he smelled something bad. He pointed out that the shrub was dead (duh!) and said, "WE DON'T GUARANTEE ANYTHING." I told him the story, how the other two had done just fine. He said that I must have cut the roots when I planted it. Bottom line, he refused to give me a refund or even a store credit. Now I'm reading all these other reviews and I can see that I'm not alone. I guess this business has too many customers, as they are doing everything they can to chase people away. I wish this local business wasn't terrible, because I would love to support a local hardware store, but after my last experience there I know I will never go there again, even if I just need a nail and they are only a few blocks away. Honestly I don't even feel like telling this story, but I guess I will because it might be helpful to someone. So I purchased a chainsaw there a few weeks ago, and it was the last one so it was on the shelf. They told me there was no box for it. There was recently a large damaging storm that had come through, and a tree had fallen on my property. My whole neighborhood was a disaster actually, and we were without power for a week. Anyway, since I was interested in removing it asap, I decided to buy from them. When I made the purchase, they told me there was no box. Their return policy is, no clearance items, within thirty days and no open boxes. I didn't think the open box could apply if there is no box? Anyway I took the saw home, and it didn't work. It would stay on for maybe 5 minutes, and then turn off. I attempted to use it, but was unsuccessful in being able to cut anything all the way through because it was malfunctioning. I immediately took it back to return it, and they told me I had to come back the next day when the owner was there, but they probably wouldn't take it back because it had been used. I told them, yes I TRIED to use it? It doesn't work. Also another customer there at the time pointed out that without a box, i probably couldn't enact any warranties. So I went back the next day and they handed the saw over to someone to look at it, who then told me that it didn't work because it didn't have fuel in it. Lol I had removed the fuel to return it! So I went home, brought it back again with the fuel (in a jar) and they said I could leave it to see if someone else there could "repair" it, so I did. The next day the repair guy called me, told me that the saw didn't work because I had put dirt in the carburetor, and that he could rebuild it for me but I needed to pay for the labour and parts. He also told me that it had obviously been used a lot! This is what made me realize that they are dishonest, because I had attempted to use the damn thing for less than an hour, and I definitely didn't put any dirt in the tank!! I filled it with one of those store bought premixed two cycle engine fuels, it was definitely clean, and it was clean when I poured it out to return it too. So much time wasted, I had to go somewhere else to get a saw to remove the tree, and I really felt taken advantage of. What jerks! Thankfully I'm disputing the charge with my cc company, and also I'm about to start a giant landscaping project and will definitely be purchasing NONE of my materials or tools from them. I probably don't even need to leave this review, because the way they treat their customers, they will lose them on their own. read more
