We drove to the area for an event at the Alberta Rose Theatre and my wife did the research on where to go. I am glad she picked The Knock Back. We ordered off of the extensive happy hour menus as the price was too tempting. My wife and one of our friends each ordered the After School Snack, which consisted of a Grill Cheese Sandwich and Tomato Soup. The other friend and I each had the HH Burger. It was perfectly seasoned, and full of flavor. We ordered two orders of french fries, and they also were perfect. Hot, crispy and plentiful. I loved the fry sauce as well. The beverages were diverse and all were excellent. We will come back when we attend the next event at the theatre.

We came on a Tuesday night, so it was super quiet, lots of seating at the bar and really chill. Loved that the drink menu was divided into flavor profiles depending on your own preferences, you can choose drinks from a selection of bright & crisp, arid & aromatic, supple & herbal, rich & robust, spicy & bold, or deep & dark. I ordered the Mace from the seasonal menu with Aperol, Linie aquavit, beet juice, orange acid, young Thai coconut cordial, and mace mist. It was good. My husband ordered the Liquid Swords from the spicy & bold selection. It was so so good I made him switch with me. I could drink this forever. It had TDL vodka blend, novo fogo silver cachaca, mango, red pepper, lemon and ginger. So refreshing! I would come here again and again!

Expatriate in Portland delivers exactly the kind of experience you want from an intimate cocktail…read morelounge with serious food. The atmosphere is dark and moody with an intimate, cozy feel that makes it a great spot for a late-night drink or a low-key dinner. I ordered the burger, which comes as two slightly smaller patties on a potato bun, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The cheese was perfectly melted with almost a steamed texture, the meat was fantastic, and the whole thing was simple, balanced, and incredibly satisfying. Honestly, it might be my favorite burger in Portland. At $22 for the two burgers, it's not exactly cheap. I had thought there might be a late-night food discount Sunday through Thursday, but that doesn't seem to be the case. That said, the quality of the burger helps justify the price. Service was good throughout, and parking is standard street parking. Overall, Expatriate is a great spot with a standout burger and a cool, intimate vibe. Definitely worth visiting if you're looking for an excellent burger in a cocktail-forward setting.

Already had my menu items picked out but was lured by the grilled peach and burrata. THE martini was the best I've ever had and I saved a bit of the olive to put on top of my olive oil cake which I highly recommend. Let's just pause and give thanks to whoever prepared the short rib pappardelle. I'd kiss you if I could because that was perfection. The flavor of the smoked short rib. The timed noodles. The light yet hearty sauce. The little crisp of bread crumb on the top. I literally had to pause and just savor that bite. Muah. Muah. Muah. The olive oil cake literally had drips of olive oil which I loved and paired with the lightly toasted hazelnuts...... just yes.

For one, their food menu for a place in Portland was quite lacking. In Portland where it's very easy to get great bar eats, I was disappointed to see goldfish and cheese platter amongst the only food they serve.
