My husband and I live in Silver Spring, but we wanted a quick, romantic weekend getaway to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I fortuitously stumbled across the Hollerstown Hill B&B and they had exactly one room left: the Queen Anne. Since Frederick is one of our favorite small towns in the general area, with several truly excellent restaurants and always something happening, and because the B&B's location is very central and the pricing reasonable, I went ahead and booked it. And I am so glad that I did! From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by our hosts, Betty and Phil. They showed us around the various common area rooms, including a large sitting room, a game room, a dining room, and a the large wrap-around porch. And invited us to use their coffee maker or grab a cold bottle of water, soda, beer or wine from the refrigerator. And then they showed us up to our room. The Queen Anne room is fabulous, with lots of light from the large windows, a King bed, two drawing chairs, an armoire, a sink/dressing area and a separate toilet and shower. Overall I have nothing but amazing feedback on our hosts and our accommodations, but if Victorian decor and dolls aren't your thing or something you'd be amused by -this may not be the place for you. Although in that case, there will be more of Betty's scrumptious chocolate chip oatmeal cookies for those of us that enjoy a truly memorable experience! read more

Betty and Phil are charming, compassionate and knowledgeable hosts. They've been in the business over 20 years and know the Fredrick area well. Their home is over 100 years old and well kept. Their home is a historic Victorian with a lot of collectable decor. It's fun to spend a night or more here for a cozy and personable experience. We had no problem parking out front. They have snacks, beverages, wine, beer, a library, pool table and a porch out front for a nice breeze during weather appropriate months. The home is about half a mile from downtown where there are amazing restaurants and cute shops. read more

After reading all the incredible reviews of this place I was really excited to stay with my Fiance. It was my fault for not doing more research but I really did not enjoy all of the creepy dolls everywhere. My biggest issue though is that I specifically chose this place for the experience of a bed AND BREAKFAST. the host made jokes about not really knowing how to make a good smoothie and he was right. The food was pretty bad. I would have preferred to choose a cheaper option for stay somewhere else and then go to a nice breakfast because the broccoli fratata had absolutely no salt...? Also, no meat options? Also, the host was very nice but there is no option for privacy for breakfast, you are forced to be talked at for 45 minutes during breakfast. The rooms were comfortable but again I was expecting bed and a good breakfast which I don't think happened. read more

It is an old house turned into a B&B near downtown Frederick. There are 4 guest bedrooms on the second floor, and the first floor is living room, dining room and a game room (billiard). It is well maintained and all the fun restaurants in the downtown area start in a short 5-min walk away. They have a small fridge filled with goodies that are complimentary, including Canis Major series from Flying Dog brewery-- really good beers. The breakfast was only so-so. They give you a lot of food but the quality was sub-par. The couple is super friendly and they LOVE to talk to you (and not necessarily listen to you). So they may sit with you through your breakfast. Overall a decent pick for $135 for a night. read more

Hollerstown Hill Bed & Breakfast is located in an adorable old house, on an adorable little street (with similarly adorable old houses), near downtown Frederick. The wonderful shops and restaurants in the downtown area are a quick and easy walk down the main strip from the Bed & Breakfast, which makes it incredibly convenient (which was the reason we chose this place to stay). The house is decorated in traditional Bed & Breakfast style with antique furniture, a lot of kitschy nick-knacks, and probably a few too many dolls; it isn't overdone, though, and it is still quite nice and welcoming. The main floor contains a parlor, dining room, billiard room (with a pool table), and a little buffet area that has a mini-fridge with complimentary beverages (soda, bottled water, wine, and some beers) and a place to keep any leftovers from dinner out on the town. There is also a Keurig machine in the dining room with travel cups so you can make your own coffee, tea, cider, or hot chocolate at any time during your visit. The guest rooms are located on the second floor while the owners live on the third floor. We stayed in the Queen Anne suite which was quite nice. Our room was equipped with all of the necessities and you can tell the owners put a lot of thought into providing for all of their guest's needs. A somewhat small, but incredibly important, detail that we appreciated was the safety of the home and knowing the owners were careful to warn all guests to keep the front door locked. My friend and I, being two single women, were incredibly thankful for this and appreciated it greatly. The owners have all the calls forwarded to their cell phones so if they happen to be away from home they can still answer any questions or help you with anything you need. This, too, was much appreciated. Our breakfast in the morning was wonderful, they give you A LOT of food and we definitely enjoyed everything we were served. The other guests that stayed the night joined us for breakfast and we all had a wonderful morning chat; the owners actually stayed and chatted with us all throughout breakfast as well. I would definitely visit here again if I am ever in the area and I highly recommend this as a place to stay. The couple is very nice and they are wonderful hosts. Stayed there for TWO weeks! Mostly because for research study with deaf kids. The hosts - Betty and Phil - was WONDERFUL hosts! So friendly and very outgoing, loves to talk! Their breakfasts were wonderful and delicious! Lot of varies - hot and cold - breakfast frittata, casseroles, parfaits, waffles, fruits, and so on... They will do gluten free or vegan/vegetarian meals if requested! The decor there is very Victorian-styled and very beautiful. Also lots of dolls there, quite a collection. They do also have two adorable dogs - very friendly - small sized. Also they do have cat but the cat doesn't roam around the house but do roam in backyard! Beautiful cat. The area is amazing convenient to walk around! Many, I'm telling you, many various kind of restaurants in downtown Frederick! And also near to Frederick visitor center, art education center and museums. I strongly suggest you to stay their bed and breakfast place!!! read more

A few things: Hubby and I are low maintenance, we have stayed in B&Bs in Ireland so we know what to expect. This house is OLD. If you are looking for a modern place to stay - go stay at a hotel! It is decorated head to toe with floral wallpaper and tons and tons of dolls - while not my taste, it went with the ambiance of the old house/bed and breakfast theme. Hubby and I got married in Frederick 5 years ago and so for our milestone decided to take a trip to VOLT and stay overnight. We arrived around 6pm, checked in and then rushed off to our dinner reservation. Breakfast was good, but fair warning, it's carby and sweet. So if you have dietary needs make it known to them. Today's breakfast consisted of coffee cake, veggie frittata and mandarin orange yogurt/pudding/whipped cream thing. Coffee cake was good, but not even close to the Jewish sour cream coffee cake my mother makes. Hubby and I loved the frittata! And the mandarin orange parfait was light and refreshing My one complaint is the pillows. You just sink to the bed in them. pretty much par for course if you were at a hotel! Another note, the owner is super chatty but super nice. Combine that with my husbands lack of ability to end a conversation...we had a hard time getting out of there this morning. Parking is fine. Other people who complained about parking are probably lazy and fat. There is parking in the back driveway and there is parking on the Main Street. Sure, we didn't get a spot right In front of B&B, but we parked a few houses down. No big deal . We would recommend this for anybody lookin to get away for their anniversary and come up to Frederick to eat and explore read more

Hollerstown Hill? A fitting name for this place, which seems to be a Bed & Breakfast by day, Fun House of Horrors by night. At first glance Hollerstown Hill B&B is every inch of what you'd expect: painted a nondescript, pinkish grey, lights adorning the bulbous bushes out front, and little ornaments and trinkets decorating the wrap around porch. Then you walk in. And I just couldn't get past the dolls. When you step through the doorway and adjust to the lighting, you're met with dozens of staring, unblinking eyes. Upright toddler-size dolls stand guard at the fireplace, and when you turn for some reprieve you're met with a doll pushing another doll - they have got to be the same age, this makes no sense - in a stroller behind the staircase. Walk into the game room, complete with chess set and pool table (nice perks), and you're introduced to the large female puppet hanging in the corner, described as keeper of the rules to check if you're cheating. This didn't help my comfort level. Then in our room, cabinets stuffed full of dolls, dolls in the bathroom, doll at the foot of the bed so all you see is the back of someone's head when you look. I had fun re-arranging that one when the boyfriend wasn't looking, just to creep him out. Besides the dolls, the owners were nice and accomodating. The room was not large, but clean. Furnishing were old since we stayed in the largest bedroom with the antique-theme. TV is a joke - they don't even sell this style of box TV anymore, do they? But then you don't really go to a B&B to watch TV. Breakfast was a simple cornbread/muffin thing with baked egg frittata. Honestly this was a little disappointing. I expected more for the B&B experience (and price), some pizzaz and some selection. I could prep a baked eggs frittata in fifteen minutes the night before, too, at home. Isn't half of being a Bed & Breakfast, 'Breakfast?' Game needs to be stepped up a little more here, since the sparkling conversation with strangers just didn't compensate. That being said, the food that was offered was well cooked and seasoned well. Great location, street parking. Overall good stay, but won't be a second-time customer. There did seem to be some folks who were annual visitors, though! So to each their own. read more

A standard B&B in Frederick. It is conveniently located to downtown Frederick so you can walk to Volt and all the other goodness the town has to offer. The owners are very nice. There is a pool table for your down time, and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. Parking is right out front (as long as you can find it). Linens are basic but good quality. Negatives: this house is full to the brim with dolls. If you don't like dolls, or have nightmares after seeing a commercial for the latest Chucky sequel, you can't stay here. The dolls are everywhere. They are oozing out of everything and staring at you from every corner. It is excessive. Also, I wasn't crazy about breakfast here. I can't put my finger on what it was that I didn't like about breakfast, but it just didn't wow me or really satisfy my appetite, even though there was plenty of food. That being said, it was just what we needed for an overnight stay and fit within our budget. I don't know if Frederick has other B&Bs or hotels located as close to (or closer to) the downtown area, but this was just fine for our purposes. Great location and nice people. We stayed in August for a night. It was our first and most Likely last time in Frederick, MD. Its pretty lame, and not a lot of nightlife. It is more of a day trip kind if deal. It was also our first B & B experience. It was nice being able to park the car and walk to everything and nice to have a fridge fully stocked with water, beer and wine. Also leftover breakfast cakes to snack on and candy. The house is beautiful but the decor not our taste. Lots and lots of dolls. The hosts were very kind and accommodating. The other guests were all there to go to some restaurant from some reality TV show and were obsessed with it. (My boyfriend and I found that flat out silly and annoying) The breakfast itself was not edible. It was too fancy with too many weird ingredients. I would have loved some simple french toast, pancakes and eggs. We were also disappointed the brewery was closed during our stay. All and all I would recommend this place as a nice clean place to stay. read more

Hollerstown Hill Bed & Breakfast is a lovely old home, beautifully and comfortable. The Innkeepers are a delight - very friendly and chatty and their dogs are extremely cute and friendly although they mostly keep them away from guests but I asked to see them. I was able to see all the rooms and they were decorated beautifully. The bed was super comfortable and I had everything I needed - even chocolate and coffee/tea which was available 24 hours a day. A lovely home in walking distance to restaurants and shops. Highly recommend. read more

My husband and I stayed here for several nights while I was doing research at the Civil War Medical Museum. We had a wonderful time, and everything was very relaxing after some hectic days. One of the best surprises was that the local baseball team was in town, and we managed to squeeze in a game one evening. The wi-fi has excellent, no problems anywhere, which is pretty rare in a B&B. Huzzah for that! Breakfast was excellent--I am not a breakfast person, but the proprietor packed scones, etc. for me for later in the day. Can't beat that!! We will be back, we hope! read more

Absolutely beautiful and quaint bed and breakfast right in the heart of downtown Frederick. We had a wonderful stay in the Queen Anne room which was very large and had its own private bathroom. The owners are so sweet and accommodating as well. The downstairs has a large living space with free snacks and drinks of all sorts and a pool table as well. It is walking distance to everything in downtown. The breakfast was carby and sweet but also delicious! Definitely will be back! read more

I stayed at Hollerstown Hill on an overnight motorcycle trip to Frederick. Given the option, I always prefer to stay in a B&B versus a conventional hotel, and this was, hands-down, the best such experience I've ever had. Here's why... First, the home itself is just beautiful, a big 1901-vintage Victorian, with large rooms, high ceilings, and period furniture and decor. On the first floor, there are a number of thoughtful guest amenities and conveniences: A pool table, a Keurig coffee maker, and a small refrigerator stocked with sodas, juice, water, and beer. The guest rooms are beautifully furnished, with televisions, strong Wi-Fi, ceiling fans, and effective window air conditioners. I was especially impressed by the bed in my room, which was supportive and comfortable. There are smoke detectors in each room, and the owners have installed a fire sprinkler system, which is well-integrated into the design and architecture of the home. The bathrooms have large, deep, clawfoot tubs, with showers. The toilets are of a vintage design, with the water tank mounted high on the wall. Like the rest of Hollerstown Hill, the bathrooms are spotless. Breakfast was tasty and filling. Fresh coffee and juice, homemade waffles with fruit, and a large side of bacon hit the spot. An added bonus was the pleasant conversation with Phil and Betty, who are both very personable and friendly. Parking at Hollerstown Hill is easy and convenient, and the home is located within walking distance of downtown Frederick and its many bistros and shops. (Francis Scott Key, author of the Star-Spangled Banner, is buried in a cemetery just a block away, and it's well worth the time to go there and visit his gravesite and memorial.) Overall, I could not have been more pleased with my stay at Hollerstown Hill, and I will definitely stay there again when I visit the Frederick area. read more

We stayed one night and it was a perfect experience. The house was very clean (our number one factor because our own house is a mess:). That's why we needed a get away. Trust me, we know a messy house and this place was clean. No visible dust. We will definitely repeat here with no reservations. Err, I mean with reservations but with no reservations about making reservations. Like the reviewer before, we also stayed in the Cottage Garden room. It was very nice and clean with lots of light from 4 windows, a great shower, and comfortable bed. The TV was small but perfect enough for me to watch SportsCenter while the wife showered. We especially enjoyed the back porch. On a geeky DIY note, I noticed the hinges were oiled and the floors weren't horribly creaky as in some older B&B's we've been in. The house was peacefully quiet. The window air conditioner was a little loud, but luckily my snoring wife drowned that out. Oh wait, there was one minor cleaning lapse. While enjoying some time on the balcony (an outstanding feature of this room), our sleuth-like inner selves determined that a couple before us had enjoyed a Dos Equis beer, a small glass of white wine, a bottle of water and one of the complimentary snack packs of Mr. Peanut trail mix of nuts and M&M's. Strangely though, the M&M's remained uneaten. That takes great discipline to make such a healthful choice. Our compliments to you. On our pre-exit room sweep we carted all this evidence inside, including that which we added to the pile, and disposed of it. Just payin' it forward. Yes there are collections of various types scattered around the walls - but I don't even want to give the doll complainers any credit because that seemed like such a petty complaint. We live close enough that I visited ahead of time to check it out. Not creepy at all and just represented where this couple had traveled and lived in their lifetime. Whatever. It was very nice. Complimentary beer, wine, water, soda, and snacks in a small fridge available 24/7. Two small dogs that live elsewhere in the house. Unobtrusive. Breakfast was nice with health-conscious choices of homemade gluten-free danish, fruit in yogurt, a nice veggie frittata, and cold juice and coffee. The coffee could use an upgrade - but I'm a robusta-hatin' coffee snob. Others may not care about this. read more

Just stayed one night but it was amazing! We stayed in the Cottage Garden room and it was very cozy. I slept like a baby and my boyfriend loved the balcony. The best room for sure. Yes there are dolls in the house, but our room only had one, so it wasn't an issue. Our breakfast was very yummy! Totally made this experience 100% worth the cost. read more

Betty & Phil are GREAT hosts! It's a charming Victorian style manse from the turn of the LAST century, but updated with great amenities. You can just park your car for the length of your stay, it's just a short walk from Downtown Frederick with its many restaurants and attractions. read more

My wonderful husband and I had a lovely stay at the Hollerstown Hill Inn. The decor is very Victorian, cozy and comfortable. The innkeeper has extensive collections of dolls and ceramic figures on display. The house is lovingly cared for and furnished. There's a terrific billiards table in the parlor. Our room was large with an ensuite bathroom. Our only complaint is that the corner sink is quite small...but that is a minor matter. The bed was comfortably firm. There's free wireless and a TV, too.....not necessary...but a nice amenity during football season. Breakfast was plentiful and so nicely served. The meal was much like I might serve to company in our home. The innkeepers are very friendly and knowledgable of the area. Our mission for the visit to Frederick was dinner at Volt....an easy walk from the inn. There's great antique shopping and many dining venues in the downtown area. After reading gushing reviews, we anticipated a very pleasant stay in their most expensive room ($175.) for our wedding anniversary. Sad to say we spent a nearly sleepless night on an unbelievably uncomfortable mattress in a hot room with a very loud "portable heat pump," so loud in fact we couldn't hear the TV sound at max volume. Opening windows did little except add more noise. Excessive decorations had to be relocated to make room for toiletries, etc. but that's minor compared to the other problems. It was so bad we didn't even stay for the breakfast. Owner wasn't interested in our comments as we left. The most expensive hotel room we found in Frederick on line was $179. A reality check is clearly in order here. Furthermore no parking is provided, the only parking was on the street a couple blocks away. These standards are way too low and the price way too high. read more

We had a wonderful time. The owners are pleasant and made us feel as if we were guests in their house rather than customers. We loved the breakfast--which was both savory and sweet. I loved the claw foot bathtub in my private bathroom, and my husband got a kick out of the billiard room. Other pluses: homemade snacks, the rocking chairs on the front porch, the beautiful house, and that we were less than 1/2 a mile from great shopping and restaurants. My wife stayed one night this past weekend and the experience was delightful. We arrived about 15 minutes prior to the "official" check-in time of 3pm and Phil just took it in stride and gave us a hearty welcome and a great walk-through of the 1901 house. The house is beautifully decorated with elegant furniture and a large space for playing pool and other games. Our bedroom (Queen Anne) was large and tastefully decorated and large enough for us to either rest on the bed or sit in the big, comfortable chairs near the windows. While the house has all the creaks and groans of an older house, it is beautifully preserved and fits in as many modern amenities as it can (including wi-fi). The house is so near to downtown Frederick that we were no more than 5 minutes away from the restaurants and museums we visited (Isabella's, Museum of Civil War Medicine). We didn't meet Betty until breakfast the next day, but her hospitality and cooking prowess were on full display with the wonderful fruit and yogurt smoothies, danish pastries and frittata with egg and turkey sausage. Phil entertained us with stories of Frederick and how the town has grown and evolved over time while trying to maintain its historic charm. Both he and Betty were ready with quick suggestions of what to see and where to eat (even though we had mapped out our stay fairly well before leaving) which were much appreciated. We stayed here with another couple for a special occasion and went out in Frederick- it is a nice walk to downtown (they also have cab info available if you want it). We found the house to be very comfortable and made good use of the pool table. The owners are very kind and accommodating but do love to chat. The breakfast and coffee was good- let them know ahead of time if you have a dietary restriction and they will accommodate you. The bathroom had a claw foot tub retrofitted with a shower and I was skeptical- but the shower was heavenly (but the shower head was a bit low for a tall person). Our bed was very comfortable and the room was very clean. The house does have period decorations and a lot of dolls- but they didn't bother us at all. The owners have 2 dogs and we saw them intermittently, but they were very sweet. Overall, I would love to stay here again!!! I would recommend it if you are in the Frederick area- a good alternative to a hotel and a lot more homey! read more
