We love Hollenbeck's. Since we have moved here and started hosting a Thanksgiving this is our go to for all things pies. The Dutch apple and Pecan are staples at our table every year along with their homemade rolls. The people are very friendly and triple check the order when I placed it. Hollenbeck's is my go to for cider and donuts in the fall. The line is almost always out the door in the fall so be prepared to wait. While you wait you can select a peck or bushel of apples, or maybe send a scout out to the baked goods and fudges, or watch the old cider press in action. When you reach the donuts you can pick from powered sugar, cinnamon powdered sugar, or plain. Personally I think plain is the best because they are hot, crispy, pillowy delights. There is a limit in that you can only buy 4 dozen donuts per person. The cider itself fresh pressed right before your eyes. Two people work together to layer the mash and wood pallets on a very old and incredible press. The cider is well filter and not as sweet as other ciders but very good! One note: you cannot buy cups of the cider- you have to buy a half gallon or gallon and then open it outside. On the pie side you can actively see and smell the pies being made. If you would like a pie for a special occasion you might want to call ahead to reserve one as they sell FAST. In the cold cases on the pie side is also where the cheese curds, summer sausage, and some meets such as elk and lamb are available. The great thing is the baked goods are available all year, so Hollenbeck's is a great stop even in the spring and summer. Also of note it smells like pressed apples ALL YEAR! We've been going up there for more than 50 years, and it's still our go-to for specialty cheese spreads, cider and maple syrup. Staff is always nice and service excellent, but I stopped buying pies there because we felt the quality dropped off significantly after Bruce Hollenbeck retired and sold the business. it was very disappointing, since they'd long had the best apple and other fruit pies in the area. Still, it's a fun place to go, and visiting relatives always want to go up for cider and to watch the press run. read more

Damn you PIES! I cannot resist your siren song. Surely I can't be the only traveler lured off highway by the spell and smell of the pies! After discovering this apple nirvana 3-4 years ago, I've prayed for opportunities to travel back to the area for work. Several times I've consumed, single-handedly, 3/4 of the Dutch Apple pies while driving....and without utensils. Imagine looking over in the car next to you seeing some dude scooping handfuls pie like a toddler on pudding! I suspect that texting/driving fatalities around Hollenbeck are low compared to the accidents caused by eager pie devotees who can't wait to get home before scarfing done hunks of their score! My expertise ends at the apple pies. Their meats are interesting and reasonably priced. Rabbit, elk, and lamb were among the meats available at my last visit. Lamb Bratwurst?!?!? Whaaat? Behind the plain white cinder block walls are the absolute best pies and apple products we've ever had! The aromas of apple mingle with fresh made donuts, and a sweet assortment of pies. The sounds of apples rolling down into the press prep chute, of kids reaching for home made confections, and folks happily juggling boxes of pies, and jugs of cider, fill the space. Hollenbeck is a fantastic place to drop by. The foliage and scenery nearby is gorgeous, the donuts are fresh and fluffy, and the cider is honestly better than the vast majority of the cider you can by nearby. THE CIDER: freshly pressed in front of your eyes, and they'll take little cups of it to give out as samples as the cider is flowing. It's got a great balance of sweetness and tartness and tastes so fresh. Supermarket cider tastes stale and too sweet by comparison. THE DONUTS: when I went, there was only plain ones left but they're fried up beautifully. It's pretty cheap too! I remember standing in awe of the cider press when I was just a girl. The little cups of fresh cider straight from the press being handed out. The sweet taste as it hits your lips. I got to watch my two year old experience that for the first time and it was truly magical. When you walk in it's a bit like a garage. The space is big and open and cold. There are giant bins of apples and a huge line of people waiting for fresh donuts. You will need a few donuts so you should join the line. When you get close to the front you can see them being made, it's fun to watch the little machine pump them out. It's even more fun to eat them fresh and hot off the press. If you turn around you will see the cider press, built in 1870. You can watch them press the cider, Mr. Hollenbeck at the helm, filling each layer with apple chunks and eventually pressing them down, releasing a waterfall of fresh cider. They hand out samples from the line, it must be fun watching the delight as everyone sips some fresh cider. It seriously made my two year old's day when Mr. Hollenbeck handed her the first cup. You would be well served to grab a chunk of fudge and a pie for the rode. Their pies are absolutely delicious, especially the ones with the dutch crumbled topping. They have a variety of cheeses, honey, jams, sauces, and mixes. Everything is local and homemade so shop until your heart is content or your wallet is empty (they are cash only, so be prepared for that). This place is an institution and people in the surrounding areas are truly lucky to have it so close by. It's worth the trip in the fall and should be a tradition for every family in the area. read more

We drove out last week and bought a Dutch Apple pie, hot pepper cheese curds and cider. They were very safe, wore masks, and were doing drive through only which we really appreciated. This is a staple in our diet every Fall but I plan to keep ordering into the Winter this year if possible. I am planning to get the blueberry pie next time for added antioxidants. It was nice here and their cider was pretty good but everything else was sub par and a donut lady screamed at my friend and told her the line ended with her and then brought a bunch of donuts up to the counter that were up for grabs for anyone. I was visiting Cortland for the weekend. My friends and I came here on late Sunday morning. We got to watch them make apple cider! They also gave out samples of the cider. Fresh apple cider donuts - plain, sugar, cinnamon, apples and squash and pumpkins for buying, apple pies - dutch and regular. There's also a store with little things to buy. Honestly, I thought the donuts and pie could've been better, but I'm still giving 5 stars because of the experience. A legend in its own time, this Cider Mill now has at its helm a third generation (fourth?) of the Hollenbeck family (Matt), who cares deeply about the local farm economy and the need to return to a support for local goods. On my recent visit here, I purchased some local kimchi and sauerkraut that are the best I have ever had, and I am a fermented foods snob. The fact that while shopping for apples and donuts I can also buy local goods is a real plus. I pass by here often, and usually stop in for the odd treat, donuts or pie. But now I know I can also get other local goods here. Virgil, after the shameful closing of its school by the austerity measures of the Cortland School district, deserves to have some good things going for it. This business is one such thing. If you're lucky enough to be there during the first couple of weekends in October, you can get some of the best concord grape juice around. Super disappointed in my visit today. I realized it would be busy and running out of apple products may be likely but they had a lady directing people where to go for what (cider,donuts,pies) but failing to inform them what they were out of. You know fall is definitely here when you can get donuts and unpasteurized cider at Hollenbeck Cider Mill. They make both the donuts and the cider on the premises and you can watch both as you wait to make your way to the donut order window. They have plan, cinnamon & powdered sugar donuts that they sell by the dozen or half dozen. And I've heard rumors that they also have special flavored donuts occasionally, like apple cider and pumpkin spice. I've never been fortunate enough to get one of those, but I've loved all of the ones I've tried! It can take a while to get through the line, so be prepared to wait. Trust me, it's well worth it! If you're not there for the donuts, you can bypass the line and go straight into the shop to make other purchases. The cider is pressed right there and is so fresh tasting! They have many other home made delights to check out as well (pickles, fudge & pies). They also have squash and a great selection of apples & pumpkins. They seem to be busiest midmorning on the weekends. Sundays are usually busier than Saturdays. How lucky are we in Cortland to have such a great fall treat! Be sure to bring cash. read more

I've been going to Hollenbeck's as long as I can remember ... thats over 50 years. Used to be in the barn behind their house but now it a full operation. Best cider there is pressed in the original press right before your eyes. Bruce Hollenbeck runs the place and is there still overseeing or doing all that gets done. Any kind of apple you're looking for with a chart to tell what each is best served as. Now he makes pies onsite but the donuts made there are to die for. It's hard to find a place that makes you feel like Grandma's back in town. I love the look on the children's faces as they watch the cider press and I appreciate the women and men who work there in such a friendly way. Like so many I look forward to it every year and I'm grateful that it still provides a deep tradition and quality stuff.
