Since January 2025, it feels to me like there's been a noticeable shift in Beak & Skiff's priorities. Pride-related messaging and products that were previously visible around June have disappeared. The Pride flag was temporarily removed during the Warren Zeiders concert last summer, only to be put back up the following day. Is that an insult to Warren Zeiders fans by assuming they're all bigots who would be offended by a rainbow flag? Whatever the reason for taking it down, the inconsistency raises fair questions for me about whether certain expressions of inclusion are actual values of Beak & Skiff's or simply marketing strategies when culturally "cool". It feels to me like recent changes reflect a greater emphasis on their bottom line being the priority now. A local organization rep I know told me that her recent request for a cancer tournie fundraiser basket was declined. And the updated property and programming, to me, seems geared toward ticketed events (nice to see they added women musicians to their live music schedule, though!). It feels like activities that once helped make the orchard accessible to a broad range of families at varying income levels now come at a higher cost. And the "patriotic" NYS fair drink was an interesting choice given the current political climate, in my opinion. From my perspective, Beak & Skiff now seems to be catering to a narrower demographic than it once did. The emphasis on community, accessibility, diversity, and inclusion feels considerably less visible than it used to. For a company that has historically presented itself as family-run and community-minded, that change is unfortunate and worth acknowledging...in my opinion, that is.

Everyone behind the bar was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and we also got to meet the owner, who was walking around talking with everyone and genuinely seemed interested in making sure people were enjoying themselves. It gave the whole place a really personal, local feel. As for the drinks, EXCELLENT. Strong, well made, and good quality. The gin in particular was really great. The outdoor area was also really cool. They have a stage for live music, cornhole, fire pits, and there was enough space to just hang out and enjoy a drink and converse with friends. This was one of those unexpected stops that ends up being a highlight of the day. Great drinks, genuinely nice people, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes you want to stick around. The Four grain whiskey was one of the highly decorated spirits winning numerous gold awards. Though my first choice is not whiskey, this was absolutely fabulous! Deep, rich flavor that won't overtake your palette. The master distiller gets a lot of praise for the work he puts into his creations, all of which are earned. I found the Skaneateles whiskey to be quite excellent as well with its smooth finish and flavorful draw. Their bourbon stands right up there with some of the best I've had. I found a hint of maple, cherry flavor but not oaky. The crème brûlée was a nice sweet spirit a kin to Bailey's or Frangelica's. It's something coffee drinkers would find pleasant to add to their drink. I also very much enjoyed the maple whiskey. Having a sweet tooth for these sort of things this New York-based foundation made for a sweet tasty drink. There is seating inside and out. The day we were there they had live music. Main Street was my Grandfathers home- Seitz family - this is now part of the Catholic Church) before my Grandfather became a Marine and ended up in Quantico , VA. Lock 1 was a perfect location to pop on in, right by the bridge, to grab a drink and snacks. The appetizers were delicious - we ordered the pretzel, loaded salt potatoes, and tacos. All were impressively good and so filling! We had a great server, very attentive, young guy, sadly I can't recall his name but he was wonderful! We also bought two bottles of Ryze Vodka to bring back home in memory of the location (Phoenix) that started a love affair of two young adults and ultimately created a storybook of family memories from New York to Virginia!
