My move from…read moreFlorida to Pennsylvania cost over $36,000, and despite months of planning, the companies were unprepared, failed to honor their commitments, and left me with additional expenses. I spent three months researching movers because this was a move involving two entire estates. Six months before the move, I completed a detailed video inventory of every item with an Interstate representative. Based on that inventory, I accepted a quote of about $36,000, including packing, materials, and transportation, and paid an $11,000 deposit. Interstate told me I would receive a quality assurance call before the move to review my inventory, but that never happened. When I called, I was repeatedly assured everything was on track and that Glass City Movers, the company they hired, would arrive with multiple crews. Instead, Glass City Movers showed up surprised by the amount of belongings, even though everything had been documented. They had only one crew, not enough boxes or packing supplies, and even had to buy materials at Home Depot and hire local day laborers. The move was delayed three days, forcing us to change hotel reservations, flights, and our rental car. When the first truck arrived in Pennsylvania, the crew agreed--in writing on the bill of lading--to leave everything in the garage so the second crew could move it into the house. When the second crew arrived, they refused to honor that agreement and would not unload the truck until I paid the remaining balance. The owner told me it didn't matter what his employees had promised, and Interstate offered no help. I ultimately had to hire local movers to finish the job. Unpacking was just as disappointing. Many boxes were poorly packed, drawers had simply been dumped into boxes, and one box even contained the crew's trash, including empty soda bottles, cigarette butts, and used tape. Despite careful planning, detailed documentation, and repeated communication, neither company delivered what they promised or accepted responsibility. I cannot recommend Interstate Moving or Glass City Movers.

If you're consulting the BBB to help you find a reliable moving service, please allow me to wreck…read moreyour hope with our personal nightmare of an experience with this company. First, the company has learned the loophole where they only have to "respond," which in their case involves lying, and the BBB will give them points for this action, even while noting the customer remains unhappy. This is how a company with their terrible record and all of their complaints still has a B. Hooray! Nothing works anymore. So, yeah, we had a pretty awful experience with them failing to deliver our property within the estimated acceptable range (by several days), but they offered a per diem or reimbursement for things we'd need to buy in order to make it without our stuff (within reason). Ok, cool, we can understand things happen, but... then we never received the promised check, even after they promised the payment had been approved and was in the mail. And really, the 5 days per diem was fairly worthless as, at that point, we'd gotten our things and found several that had been dismantled and rebuilt improperly or missing pieces, etc. I made a complaint with the BBB and UMS ignored them until the BBB gave up and closed the file. I thought I'd finally blocked out the memory of this entire nightmare (I've left so much out so you have a chance to read it all today), but then got the notice from the BBB that the company had finally responded (after 3 years!), which said they'd delivered within the established range, apologized for difficulties, and given us remedies... but none of that was true. And the BBB responded to me saying these were lies by saying "so sorry, but we're going to close the file (again) and say the company responded to you and you still weren't happy." But the BBB grading system gives them points for this!! So, yeah, it's all a farce. Just burn your stuff and buy new things when you get to your new city.

University was the ONLY company who responded to me. They were prompt in scheduling a walk through for an estimate. Shelby showed up EXACTLY on time: as my clock chimed 3:00, the door buzzer rang. She was there about 15 minutes and said I'd have a quote within 24 hours. Forty five minutes later, I had quotes for both full pack and just moving. As I was completely overwhelmed, I decided to go for the full pack, although I did pack and move some of my stuff before the big day. Nicole called the day before the move and said the movers would be there between 8:00 and 10:00. I figured that it would be closer to 10:00, which is what most businesses seem to do. Nope, they were there at about 8:10 and got right down to work. After I told them what I wanted packed and what I didn't, I left them alone for a while so II could take my cats to the new place. When I got back about an hour later, they'd made great strides. They also go to great lengths to make sure nothing breaks -- they even wrapped my dish brushes and sponges in about 5 sheets of paper! I will say that they didn't pack some things I wanted packed (specifically, a cabinet that I had over the toilet in the half bath) and they did pack lots of other things I didn't want. They also took the boxes I packed (which, admittedly, were open boxes) and put them inside other boxes. I'd used open boxes so I could readily find what was in them. They did mark the boxes, but only with what room they came from -- not even a hint as to what was inside. When they put the boxes in the new place, for the most part, they put them in the equivalent rooms. The problem with that was that my nephew is staying in the master bedroom for a few week until he moves out, so we had to move things. (I had explained to them numerous times what the situation was, but they apparently didn't hear me, and I was too busy unpacking things in the kitchen to realize where they were putting things. But, all in all, I was very happy with them. Mark and his team worked extremely hard and were very friendly. I would absolutely recommend them to anybody who wants to hire a mover. And the fact that they are woman owned and donate to the fight against hunger made me feel even better about hiring them.
