If you are checking in after someone else already made arrangements and paid for the room, they will demand you provide yet another credit card for "mystery" expenses. Seems to be a very questionable practice that could not or would not be explained. I did park within the white lines as requested a host of times. Room maintenance could be better. Damaged curtains drooping. I did enjoy sliding around in the shower. Helped prepare me for winter ice. This experience will definitely remain in my memory when I next visit Durham. I would rather sleep in my car and avoid hidden fees. read more

So the hotel itself is decent. Room is clean, beds are fine. But I had a horrible check in experience. My husband and I were going to be in town for a wedding. Due to a pet emergency, my husband couldn't join so it was just me. He had already secured the room on his card so he called the Holiday Inn and explained the situation. We did not get the young man's name who he spoke to, but we were very clearly told that as long as I showed up with the card used, it would be fine. I got to town early for the wedding around 1pm and housekeeping had not begun yet, which is absolutely fine and understandable so I was not upset I couldn't get in early. I'm assuming the gentleman at the counter was the same who spoke with my husband on the 29th. I explained I had the card and my own ID and he confirmed that would be fine. Fast forward to check in this evening, many of us were in the same situation if no early check on so it was a rush on Avril, the single night auditor at the front desk. I go to check in and she adamantly denies that I can proceed as for credit card security, a third party cannot present someone's card. As a policy, this is great and she did a good job protecting my husband's card. HOWEVER because of the situation and being in a rush, her demeanor was quite rude. I had kept a calm tone, called my husband and explained the situation, indicating that they could not honor the conversation he had had previously. Avril interrupted me to rudely say that it's not the can't honor the conversation, but it is a policy and she insisted no one would advise otherwise. I can understand miscommunication. I can understand policy mishaps. What I am not okay with is someone telling us "no that didn't happen" when both my spouse and I were in the room for that phone call and I confirmed it when I came to town at 1. Once the rush cleared out and she was able to email the proper form to him, I got checked in fine and her customer service facade resumed, but I do not appreciate how we were treated in the moment. In the future, we will be sure to either go back home to Maine or find more friendly accommodations in Portsmouth or surrounding towns. read more

Just want to say, I am an overall fan of Holiday Inn Express. I find them to be overwhelmingly clean, affordable, and uncluttered, with friendly service. I also enjoy their amenities: free parking, WiFi and breakfast. I'm glad to report HIE in Durham was no different. I found a deal on Hotwire- you play a guessing game using their stats and amenities- and I'm pretty good at this game- and you find out what you've just bought after the purchase. This hotel had all the amenities mentioned above. Even the to go breakfast (due to COVID) had a decent selection: coffee/tea, hot/cold cereals, almond and regular milk, bananas, muffins Chobani yogurt and granola bars. The room was clean, recently renovated, with friendly service plentiful parking and working WiFi. A 15 minute drive to Portsmouth and a little longer to Kittery, Maine. It was a fun jumping off point to explore the Portsmouth area and take a drive to Southern Maine. read more

they provide complimentary breakfast buffet style and complimentary parking. they have a fridge and microwave in the rooms. I had to check out really early in the morning and there was a front desk employee available and he gave me a receipt of my stay immediately unlike other Holiday Inn locations where I can't get a receipt even if I asked. some of the fixtures in my room was nice but a few things had wear and tear like the sink had a crack in it and the shower head had a few broken parts where water would gust out. the TV remote was sticky. the toilet lever had to be held down to flush and toilet seat and lid was not cleaned, there was urine on it, wonder what else wasn't cleaned. I arrived late and had to go to sleep so I didn't call housekeeping, just clean the seat myself. read more

Good hotel with solid rooms and a great breakfast spread. Apartments all around the building makes parking lot congestion a bit if a pain-but thats Durham in general. The suite we stayed in was big, clean and comfortable. Only down side was the shower. No actual shower head because it's set up for handicap access. And the water pressure is weak. They should definitely fix that, since a morning shower is a pretty important part of what you buy in a hotel room experience. read more

BEWARE FILTHY ROOM AND OWNER DOES NOTHING. DO NOT. STAY HERE. We stayed at this hotel And there were clumps of hair under the mattress pad, hair in the sheets and a cracked sink. Called Corporate who told me I had to deal with the owner. The owner emailed Me And called me a liar and that there was no hair found. Mind you the owner said her staff went up and checked the room but the staff had told me that the owner couldn't be contacted until the following Monday?!When we came in to the hotel after an event at the University there was no one at the front desk and they Had told me prior that the hotel was sold out. So, changing rooms was not an option and since no one was at the front desk when we Came in....talking to someone didn't seem like an option. Not sure why I would lie about this. I have nothing to gain. So for $400/night I should not have to clean hair out of the bed and shouldn't have a cracked sink. I called corporate and they told since I was still on the premises the owner would have to deal with it(owner wasn't going to be on premises for 2 days and front desk said she couldn't do anything to help me. Also guest services told me they couldn't help me because I wasn't checked out. I said I would go to the Front desk and check out. Guest services said if I checked out now (10:00am) that I would be charged an early checkout fee. Complete run around from everyone. Bottom line-no one wants to take accountability for a filthy room. There are plenty of other options a little further out. I will never stay at another holiday inn and am Cancelling my rewards program based on this owner's response and the response of corporate. read more

I stayed in this hotel on 4/15/2021 and woke up with bites all around my ankles that got progressives more and more itchy as the day went on. Laying in bed tonight having some paranoia, I call the hotel to see if it is pet friendly, the front desk clerk tells me that it is; I then ask her if they only stay on particular floors, she tells me they stay on the 1st floor, I stayed on the second. Now, my paranoia instantly turns to bed bugs because I have not spent any time outside, and it's not exactly mosquito season yet. The clerk then tells me she will pass the info onto her manager, who arrives in 30 min. I I ask if I will receive a callback, and she then says we will only call you back if something is found in the room. Shame on me for not checking the room when I arrived, but if you have someone who wakes up with bites on their ankles, you call them back regardless; you also apologize for their bad experience. I Will not be staying at this location again. Update- a manager did call me back to let me know that pest control came out and carpet beetles were found in the room. I was given 20k IHG reward points for the inconvenience of having extremely itchy bites all over my ankles. The manager was very apologetic and nice, but I still will not be staying at this hotel in the future. read more

We stayed here for two nights while we were visiting the University of New Hampshire. The hotel has been newly renovated (or I think so because the photos of the lobby are totally not how it looks now), I actually think the place was built pretty recently given the decor so a little confused. This review is written based on the staff and the meeting room - not the hotel itself. I went here for two days of training. I was the instructor for these training sessions. The room was pretty small, just enough room for the ten of us. The wireless was not 100% reliable and that made it hard to keep up with the training. Wireless aside, the staff was extremely responsive, friendly and helpful. A great location for small meetings. read more

If you're only staying a night, this will meet your needs. It's nothing extravagant nor poor but very average. It's within walking distance of the UNH campus and the little downtown coffee shops and stores. The hotel is literally surrounded by UNH off campus housing and you have to be careful where you park because you will get towed. We were in town for a tour of UNH and arrived around midnight. The front desk attendant was friendly and responsive. Our room was a bit tired with an older bathroom and the standard 1980's air vent that stuck out from under the window. The tub didn't drain well and when we showered, the tub filled up to your ankles. In addition, the sink wasn't located in the bathroom so when you left the bathroom, you opened the door with very unsanitary hands. YUK! We can only hope the cleaning staff is disinfecting that door knob. The room was clean. Although the room came with a microwave and a coffeemaker, we didn't try either. For one night, it was acceptable. We didn't try the free breakfast in the a.m. The price for one night was reasonable. This was not my first hotel that I've stayed in close to a college campus that lacked updating and décor. Why? Fix it up and charge more money per night. After all, it's walking distance to town and UNH. We probably will seek other refuge on our next trip to UNH.....pending my daughter gets accepted. read more

PET FRIENDLY!! This is a very nice HIE location. It's modern and even while being renovated, everything was clean. The bed was so comfortable and our room was quite spacious and cozy. The parking lot is very small, though, and it's right next to college apartments, so it can get loud at night during the school year. Other than that, it's a great location. read more

This is probably the worst hotel I've ever stayed in, and it's not even that the rooms and/or location were that terrible. The staff here is absolutely the rudest bunch of employees I have ever had the displeasure of coming in contact with. We're not talking regular rude, we're talking spit-in-your-food-slamming-the-door-on-you kind of rude. Let's start with our check in. Our rooms had been paid for 8 months in advance for a wedding. Someone else's name was on our booked room (fine) but I called earlier to make sure we didn't have to do anything special when we checked in. "Nope, just list the name on the room" Sue said. Well, we get there after driving 4 hours and they won't let us check in - just as I expected. Luckily the party our room was listed under just arrived. The staff continued to be tart and short with all four of us. Completely uninterested and not helpful they shooed us up to our rooms without even telling us where they were. Fast forward and we arrive back at the hotel around 1:30 am. I see a sign for "parking passes required or you will be towed". Funny, we NEVER GOT A PARKING PASS. I went in and argued with another "manager" at the front desk for a pass. He kept telling me he gave us one and he didn't. See comment above about other party listed on our reservation. SHE didn't get a parking pass and neither did we. Rudest man I've ever encountered, EVER. Obviously, the hotel (and it's staff) are in cahoots with the towing company. Of course I wake up the next morning and Skippy's Towing, whatever the name of it, has towed our car across the street. It's $120.00 to bail our car out from ACROSS THE STREET because the man at the counter NEVER GAVE US A PARKING PASS and then REFUSED TO GIVE ME ONE THAT NIGHT. We won't even pay too much attention to the fact that our family stayed in the room next door and they could never tell them how to get the messages of their machine. Or how the hotel staff was swearing a big stream of expletives throughout the hallway one morning, or how we asked "what is fun to do around here" and were given the cold shoulder. Sue, the "manager" stands out in my mind as one of the worst, nastiest, rudest employees/human being I have ever encountered. How rude of a hotel that had so many rooms blocked off for our special event to treat us so poorly. Holiday Inn, you should be ashamed of yourselves. This place is located sort of in the middle of nowhere but also right by the college. There is not too much to do around here especially if you're looking for something in walking distance. However if you are here for work, which I was or if you are here for a short stay this is a fine place to stay. It is very accommodating, the service is great, and there's breakfast in the morning. The gym is very small maybe a treadmill or two and some free weights, that's about it. The rooms are spacious and the beds are comfortable. I had made a reservation but last minute my dad decided he wanted to get a room as well and they were very accommodating last minute to him. This place gets the job done. Clean rooms, shampoo, conditioner, soap, kleenex, 4 hangers, two beds, one desk, one dresser, a tv, and a pear tree. The heater/air conditioner is tricky - has some kind of energy saver setting which means that when you get in there and need to turn the system on, you need to press stuff, then wait 2 minutes to see if what you did was effective. Same deal with the TV. Might need to turn everything on and off a few times before you get the cable box and the tv on at the same time and communicating properly. Be patient, and everything works. The breakfast was adequate - always providing cereal options, oatmeal packages, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, bagels, croissants, pancakes (via automated machine), and muffins. There are also some hot items - bacon and some kind of ham omelette one day, the other day bacon and scrambled eggs. Coffee and tea are also provided. The dining room is big enough for the 68 rooms they have, assuming an average occupancy rate of about 30%. The hotel is located a few blocks from UNH, and has free parking (though you must get a printout from the desk to leave on the dash to avoid being towed). Folks who work here are really friendly, and there were always cookies at the front desk that were freely available to guests. Very close proximity to delicious food at Ffrost tavern down the block and downtown Durham. Would definitely stay here again. Rate was somewhat reasonable for the walkability to town and the university, $99/night. read more

If you don't need that many amenities, then this hotel is a great place to go. That said, I enjoyed my stay there. The room was good, the mattress was firm, and interestingly enough, the shower was identical to the one at my parents' house! The staff was also top-notch, and the hotel has a complimentary breakfast. The fitness center, however, left something to be desired, as it consisted of two treadmills and an exercise bike, all pointed at a television, plus a mirrored wall and a water cooler. When I made my reservation they charged my credit card . Not knowing this, I gave them a different credit card at check in and they charged that one as well. When I went back to the desk to tell them what happened the girl at the desk told me it wasn't their problem. She could have easily credited my acct but told me my bank should take care of the hold. I spent the following night at a holiday inn express in Boston. They charged my card prior to my check in and when I checked in I didn't hand them a credit card because of course they saw that they already charged it! Also, forget about getting a room around graduation ; they jack up the rates to $600-700 a night! There's only two hotels in Durham so they completely take advantage of the parents at graduation and other events at UNH. Never again! read more

We're currently staying here at the Holiday Inn Express Durham....waiting for a tow company to open up on a closed day due to inadequate parking....we've been here two nights in a row with no parking available when we've gotten in around 11 at night. The first night we were informed that we might have to walk in and request to be placed in a handicap...we found a spot down behind the building. The second night same thing, we parked way down behind the building against some scrub brush with no signs btw. Imagine our surprise as we head out to our daughters horse show this morning with no car! The attending manager claims "she" always tells her people that there's additional parking down behind in a plot that actually appears to go with the adjacent apartments. I've been here at least 6-nights in the past 4 months and have never been advised of this additional parking ever...I'm very disappointed that there was no clear direction or property map offered for such a tight parking problem in as small of a town as Durham. One would think that they'd have a "working relationship" with their neighbors so that a call might be made considering that we clearly had our hotel parking pass visible. Really will keep this in mind before considering this property again. read more

Stayed here the past weekend ,the price is a little high, and my stay started a little rocky. The kid working the front desk wasn't on his A game, and I had some small not really worth speaking off issues, but I did email the manager Steve Godin about my stay and the promblem. Having worked in the service industry for 8+ years I have to say he really stepped up his game and showed what true customer service really is. On top of an appology and a credit he also told me he'd book my next stay personally to ensure an awesome stay. He was quick on responces to my emails, and gave me the impression he trully cared. Priced high for a budget hotel. No surprises, not the cleanest but not gross. Great location for Univ. of New Hampshire. Staff was fine, free breakfast looked like the standard stuff so we went to the coffee shop a block away. Next time I will probably drive farther for a little nicer hotel. If you've been to a Holiday Inn, you know what you'll get here. They can't seem to get the carpets clean, the lamps dusted and the grout and rust in the bathrooms clean in these types of places. The woman at the desk who was there when we arrived was nice, pointed us in the direction of the local pizza place. The front desk manager was super helpful on the phone in booking a last minute room on Labor Day weekend that accommodated our dog. My travel style is more luxury than budget, but the room was clean and modern, the free breakfast was great, and I have never met a front-desk manager who had as much patience as the Manager on duty. I have stayed at this hotel several times and have had no problems until this past weekend. The front desk records each customer's license plate number upon check in and gives out a parking voucher to keep on the dash to prevent towing. Before going out for a few hours that night, I stopped by my car to make sure my parking pass was totally visible and that I was parked in the designated areas. Both were fine. I came back a few hours later, looking forward to going to sleep only to find my car had been towed. I went to the front desk to ask why my car was gone and the GM, Val Robichaud, said that it must have been my fault and I must not have had the voucher visible. I explained that I double checked before going out to make sure this wouldn't happen. She kept insisting that it was me that is wrong and that there is nothing she will do. She was unacceptably rude during the entire ordeal. I asked her why she would record license plate numbers if it did nothing to protect paying customers from being towed and she had no answer. After arguing with her for 20 minutes, I walked down to Smittys (the tow company that they work with) to find my car. I walked up to it and looked in the window, only to see my parking pass totally visible on the dashboard. I asked the tow employee why the car had been towed and he said that I must have snuck in when he wasnt looking and put my parking pass back and that he never ever makes mistakes when he tows. I stared at him for a minute totally flabbergasted before saying I wouldnt come down there at 3 am to argue with him over something if I knew I was wrong. He, like Val, insisted that I was wrong. He ended up calling either a fellow employee or the hotel, because a minute later he came back with a totally different attitude and apologetically said that he must have made a mistake and I can have my car back. Long story short, I dont think I would book with this hotel again simply because of how rude the staff was. The GM of all people should have customer service skills and instead is the worst I have ever come in contact with. Even if you follow the rules it doesnt mean you wont get towed wrongfully. read more

Not sure if all the rooms are huge but ended up with a suite on the third floor (room 322). Hotel was in nice shape, cookies, fruit, and hot cider available on check in. Reasonably priced. Heater/AC units are a little noisier than is normal and cardio room could use some weights along with daily replenishing of the towels and water cooler. Staff was super nice. Wi-fi was solid. I'd certainly stay here again. read more
