This is one of my all-time favorite local donut shops. I will drive the near half hour it takes to get from my house to this shop for the vanilla bean glazed donut. I have never had a better donut in my life! Just as good are the glazed donut holes because they're basically mini versions of the vanilla bean!! (The cinnamon sugar donut holes are good but I find them a tad dry.) The chocolate cardamom and the espresso and cream yeast donuts are also amazing. I'll admit I don't try too many of the cake donuts but during the fall, they have a seasonal pumpkin cheesecake donut and it is also to die for!! While this doesn't particularly deter from me giving the place five stars, I can't get into the coffee. I've tried the seasonal pumpkin pie latte, the mocha, and the seasonal cinnamon toast cold brew but I find the coffee/espresso they use to be too acidic for my preferences. Our experience with this place was negative on so many levels. We initially called ahead to inquire about ordering donuts for the next day. The woman we spoke to was nice and all, but apparently she had been given wrong information or not trained. After we put in the order, she had to call us back and told us that we could not place the order the way we had (individual donut flavors rather than a half dozen of one flavor - huge difference!). So, obviously I was very disappointed. She was apologetic, but I honestly felt it would have been in their best interest to offer us an extra free donut or something due to the huge lack of communication. It didn't stop there, we decided to not pre order and just go to the location. My boyfriend went in and ordered the donuts I wanted and specified that I have Celiac and the blueberry donuts needed to be gluten free. However, their poorly trained staff did not follow the procedures and put graham cracker crumbles all over them. She then had the audacity to ask my boyfriend if the donuts "needed to be completely gluten free". Again, completely disappointed and annoyed the staff barely apologized and gave me two day old donuts (not the flavor I wanted at all) after ruining that batch I actually wanted. To top it all off, their donuts weren't even good probably because they were old. I will never return here because these people clearly don't train their staff to take things seriously and when they do make mistakes (which everyone does) they sure as hell don't know how to make it right. Regarding the owner's reply to this review: why did your staff say they were day old donuts and that the crumble had gluten?? Is your staff not trained? I believe that small businesses can change lives. I absolutely know small businesses can change an area. I'm certain Holey Rollers will do both. Paseo is wonderful - I've loved it forever, I used to live on 28th between Lee & Dewey, my first apartment after college and the site of many awkward dates. But back then, you had Craig's Emporium for shopping and Picasso's for food, drinks and live music (but back then it was Galileo's... dating myself a bit here), and of course, galleries. That was pretty slim pickings. It was great that it was walkable, but I wasn't in the market for much art since my starting salary probably ended up being below minimum wage, lol. Going back a bit further, I don't think there has been a coffee shop down here since Medina's - the site of all my beatnik dreams in high school - think "So I Married An Axe Murderer" - my friends and I would drive down here in our Volvos from the 'burbs, blaring Beastie Boys... we thought we were so cool. So much flannel, so many clove cigarettes, so much bad poetry... Paul scowling at us but also being kind to us, his brow permanently creased from suffering through so much bad slam poetry. But now, all those flannel-clad teenagers are Lululemon mommies, and we can come to Paseo, go shopping at Betsy's and lament getting rid of our now-stylish-again clothes from high school, and we select from an ever-increasing choice of food and drink, and that's all so great. But to be able to pop down here with my daughter before school, or to schedule a meeting with a colleague right after I drop off my kids - that wasn't something you could do before Holey Rollers. So I did that, today, and scheduled a meeting right after drop off. I had a perfect drip coffee (from an air pot and it was so piping hot and fresh it made me wonder who needs pour overs anyway) and some powdered sugar donut holes. All of it was perfect, and the space delightful. I think merely being in a part of town before it gets busy and the day starts to move into lunch time, that makes you think differently about an area. Like, for the first time in a long time this morning I was like, why don't we live down here? And.. then you think about what it means for a parent who is trying to raise a gluten free kid, or perhaps even more challenging, raise their kids as vegans. And think about all the treats that would mean they have to turn down and miss out on. To know that you could make up for it by getting your kids a Holey Roller GF or vegan donut? I just think that must be the thing that helps keep a diet or a day on track. The thing that keeps a kid from having a meltdown and feeling left out. Or you think about the adults who go without so often to stay healthy as GF or in keeping with a belief system as vegans, and suddenly have the perfect place to meet someone for coffee, a treat, etc., and know that they can get food and drink and not worry, or have to explain why they're not having anything. That seems like something that could change your life, help normalize some situations and take the focus off something small so you can look at the big picture. So, kudos to Andrea and her lovely staff for moving these donuts off the truck and into a permanent home. Definitely not worth the $36 I shelled out to cop a dozen doughnuts. I've had much better for much less. I only tried this place out because it's directly across the street from Picasso on Paseo restaurant (food was amazing by the way)! There was way too much going on with the almond shavings all over the apple fritters and maple bars. We literally scraped them off and they tasted okay then, but I definitely would have liked actual apple chunks in the apple fritter. Don't think I tasted any. The biggest disappointment was the old fashioned cake donuts. I thought I'd be getting a regular old fashioned glaze, but theirs looked like glazed cake donuts with sprinkles on top (why the sprinkles????) and they were stale. Not cool and I'm not sure how you mess those up, because there was clearly no buttermilk in the recipe. Also, I'd suggest you get there early. I arrived about 11:30 am and many of their doughnuts had sold out, so I was left with slim pickins'. The most amazing thing about this place? It's a donut shop dedicated to your health. Sounds crazy, right? I found this place through their foodtruck, seeing that they were a vegan donut shop. I'm not a vegan, but the idea intrigued me. I also saw that they had gluten free options and that became more important to me in recent months as my doctor told me I was gluten and dairy sensitive, which apparently is part of getting old *shakes fist*. Since changing my diet, I've felt better than ever, but it's been a difficult road and I missed pastries. This place has been a godsend. The first thing I liked about this shop, was the staff. They are very friendly, with warm smiles and kind words. They are helpful and considerate, asking about your dietary needs and fulfilling them to the best of their ability. Next I liked the store. It's bright and cheerful, clean and tidy, with a fun personality. It's also attached to an art gallery, with a small shop and open seating area with comfy seats and tables, so you can sit and enjoy coffee and conversation. The bathroom is beautiful and clean. If you are a woman, this is probably more important info to you. *giggle* Next I loved the selection and options of items available. There are several options of donuts from baked cake, to yeast, to fried fritters. There are at least 3 gluten free options at all times, and specialty flavors every month. I'm a HUGE fan of their chocolate ganache as it's not overly sweet, and their Mexican hot chocolate flavor has a sprinkling of chili powder and ghost pepper salt over the ganache that wakes up my mouth and mind with a "WOWEE!". But don't worry if you are a savory breakfast fan or just not into donuts. There are delicious options such as the breakfast tacos with either a free range egg or seitan, including pickled veggies and avocado *drools* that can be in a flour or corn tortilla. There are also overnight oats or a vegan English muffin breakfast sandwiches with spinach and pesto (next on my list to try). They have many drink options as well from coffee to tea to fresh fruit juice. They fresh brew each tea and specialty coffee on the spot, or if you are in a rush, they have drip and cold brew coffee ready made. They have several dairy/non dairy options and sweetener options as well, including specialty house made syrups they change monthly. This month they have a cardamom rose syrup I HAVE to try on my next visit, but today was just local honey in my chai. Last, but definitely not least, I love the taste. I've tried other gluten free products and they never had a good texture to me. These donuts are different. Now, it's a tricky thing, gluten free baking, so on a rare occasion they may be less amazing than other days (today was the BEST I'd had, OMG!!) but they are always still so good. I'm partial to the cake donut and they always make me feel like I just had an indulgent, fluffy, rich, delicious treat I should feel guilty about, but I don't. I really enjoy Holey Rollers! This was my first time to the new space, and it's a great little community area. Plenty of seating and a cool little bookstore around back. My absolute favorite donut is the banana walnut sea salt. This donut is all things that are good in life, I can barely explain it. They don't make it often on the truck, and I was told they don't make it often in the store either. What is wrong with America?! She said I can usually catch it on Saturdays though. I think it's a baked donut, it's like a cupcake or cake. I knocked off one star for their paper donut holders. I think it's a pour over coffee filter, which is creative and earth friendly and all that. Don't get me wrong. But most of the frosting from my donut stuck to the paper and it didn't provide for easy transport. read more

Overall I am pleased that somewhere in town is recognizing that gluten free/vegan people need yummy treats too. However, when on the prowl for a gluten free donut this morning, I wandered in here and they only had one option available. It was pretty good and not "deep fried" tasting like some of their others that I remember from before I went gluten free, but I think the whole point of offering gluten free options is to have optionS, plural. Currently this is as good as it gets for my fellow gluten free peeps, but hopefully they listen and keep more flavors stocked. I also ordered a vanilla coconut milk matcha latte to go with the donut, making a grand total of $11 for a small latte and one donut. It hurts my soul to swipe my card for that, but i told myself it's worth it to support a small business. I'm a big fan of matcha but to be honest I thought the matcha latte here tasted like a cup of grass. The matcha needs some refining, so I would recommend ordering something else in the meantime. I've had other coffees there before and they are much better. It might depend of the barista, but I would really recommend their coffees. This would be a perfect stop for a couple on a romantic stroll through the Paseo, or maybe a weekend morning stop with the kiddos. read more

Took a trip to Holy Rollers this morning. I've been stalking their glorious donut pictures on Instagram for a while, and thought this chilly winter morning was a great time to try out this tasty addition to the Paseo District. 5/5 The cappuccino is beautifully made and carefully craft crafted, it's a good cappuccino. 5/5 the cordado. Perfectly presented in its traditional glass, hot, strong. 5/5 the lavender cake donut. The cake donut was not greasy. It was pretty hefty. The lavender taste was light and refreshing. I was a bit worried that this would taste like bathroom potpourri. Some lavender flavored items seem to be like eating potpourri, rather than being flavored lightly with said flower. 4/5 the espresso donut was pretty standard for a donut shop donut. Fried dough and a very tasty glaze well presented. It kind of ranges up there as being just a donut. But a good donut. 2/5 the Mexican hot chocolate donut. It pains me to say that this donut was not as good as I hoped it would be. It was a lovely dark chocolate cake donut, coated in a thick dark chocolate glaze. It was then lightly dusted with cayenne pepper. I was hoping for a donut that would be a nice warm spicy mixture with a lingering chocolate taste. Instead the cayenne pepper was very overpowering and assaulted your taste buds making it impossible to enjoy this donut. It was unpleasant. 5/5 the Mini Apple Spice Donuts were very cute and reminiscent of the donuts you get from Hostess. The baby seemed to enjoy these apple spice cinnamon dusted Confections. She also had the powdered sugar and vanilla cake donut holes. When I try to sneak a bite, she firmly told me no and then proceeded to lick all of the powdered sugar off of it and then devour them. 4/5 I dig a restaurant that does one thing and does it well. I can appreciate that here. Their donuts were filling, yet not greasy, and flavorful. The location is kind of an Industrials / Art Space. It makes a good use of the space. My husband did find the main dining hall a little like he put it a hospital waiting room. I didn't really get that vibe. Now for something a little bit new and maybe strange to include in a review. The bathroom 2/5. When a business caters to a wide variety of clientele, including those with families, which may include small children, it's important to have a good bathroom. Little ones get messy when they eat. Everybody gets messy when they eat. And maybe people just need to use the bathroom. I don't want to take it out on this particular establishment, but I've noticed a certain lack of changing tables in bathrooms. Nothing bugs me more than doing business at a place And then having to change my baby on the floor of a bathroom like it's a truck stop in the middle of Barstow. Here one stall is clearly big enough for one of those koala changing tables, and yet there's nothing there. I had to wipe down the cement floor, lay my baby down on the cold cement floor, and then proceeded to change her diaper while hoping she didn't touch anything. Again this is something I'm finding a lot of restaurants. You want people to come in and spend the money and enjoy themselves, but then you make it really hard to stay. Sadly this does drop my review down by a star. I know I'm probably not the only one, but I'm going to get called out for making this point. Make the whole experience good. I would like to come back to this establishment and try a wide variety of their different Donuts. But I am going to remember in the back of my mind that if my toddler has to go to the bathroom I may not want to stay long. I may just get one or two Donuts to go, instead of staying and ordering more and spending more money there. Just a thought. I guess that's my bottom line. read more

As soon as we walked in I knew we should just turn right around and walk back out. My husband paid for and ordered me a birthday cake from here on Wednesday to be picked up today. I have an egg allergy and this has been my favorite donut place for years. I have not had a birthday cake in years and I was so excited because I can eat it from here. We went to pick it up today and they never made it. It was a $70 cake that was paid for and ordered well ahead of time. They said the ticket never went through yet charged us for it. AND on top of that the handwritten TICKET for it was literally sitting right next to the cash register where you buy donuts and said paid on it with all of the info out in the open....... They had nothing to say at all nor did they even offer to rectify it in any way. It was basically sorry for you and here is your money back. Disappointed is and understatement.
