As good as the shave on haleiwa's North Shore, except different scenery! Fantastic flavors and very nice staff!

We found this Hokulia 7 years ago, and it became a staple for a family. Lenexa restricts this sort of structure from being available for more than a set amount of time, so we went at least 4 times a week if not more. It was fun - the shaved ice was the best, the staff were incredible and the atmosphere was just fun. I have so many great memories of those days! There was fun music, hula hoops, etc. At the time, it was run by a local family. When their kids went off to college, the family sold it to the person/group who was building the brick and mortar store off of College and Lone Elm in Olathe. Up until that point, this was a 10 star experience. Since that transition, this location has proven time and time again to not be the priority of the owner. The shaved ice is fine, so no change there. ** This location is never open. This year, they modified their open times per their Instagram. I wouldn't be upset with it if they didn't close for any sort of weather. As a trailer, this location isn't safe for staff when it's storming. I respect that. However, they close this location for anything. It could sprinkle at 9 AM with no rain expected for the rest of the day, and they'll close for the day. There have been so many instances when it was sunny and hot after a brief sprinkle or storm in the morning well before the location opens, but this location would still be closed due to weather. Fun fact: This location was open for 38 days thus far in 2023 when accounting for scheduled closures. Of those 38 days, this location was closed nearly 20% of the time due to weather, technical or unknown issues. Questions left on Instagram posts are removed too if you ask about why they're closed. No snark. No anger. Just a simple question. ** This location isn't a priority to the owners. It's clear. In 2021 or 2022 (can't recall right now), they ran out of ice a few times. The good news is that they don't fill it up with hoses in back like other shaved ice places in the area, but remember they have a brick and mortar store. When we asked them why couldn't use that ice, they said it wasn't possible. The brick and mortar store is obviously their priority, and this location isn't. The reality about this location is that the inconsistency keeps crowds away. For years, this location would have long lines for shaved ice. Everyone wanted some of this sweet treat. We would save our points all summer and spend them all during those last few days to give others free shaved ice. These days this location is rarely busy. We stopped going because it was impossible to tell when it would be open, and it looks like others have felt the same way. I have to wonder at what point does the operating cost outweigh running this location again. read more

I came with my friend and his gf to have something sweet after dinner. We couldn't go to a frozen yogurt place because my friend's gf is a vegetarian, so she doesn't eat anything with dairy. Therefore, we looked up places in the Overland Park, KS area and found this shaved ice place nearby JCCC that was across from the Quiktrip gas station in an open parking lot. I never had shaved ice from a food truck before. I decided to get a small size with Mango, Peach, and Strawberry flavors with Macadamia ice cream. The three flavors were great, however, the Macadamia ice cream wasn't that good and the texture seems like they made the ice cream too long since it was really thick to scoop. read more

Hands-down one of my absolute favorite summer treats! There's just something about a perfect, flavorful, Hawaiian-style shave ice with a sno cap (no, it's not misspelled!) on a hot, summer day! Similar to other eateries not available to me at all times (lookin' at YOU, In N Out), the place can only be found for a few, hot months each year in the parking lot of the northeast corner of College Boulevard and Pflumnmnmn Road. I think that has a little bit to do with the draw, but really it's just darn good! Some parts of eating shave ice are simple, such as choosing one of the three sizes (pro tip: they stack the ice SERIOUSLY high!). Other parts of eating shave ice are not so simple: **Which of the 14 million flavor combinations should you choose? **Mainland-style with just the flavored ice, or Hawaiian-style with a scoop of ice cream in the middle? **Add a sno cap, or stick with just the ice? What's the sno cap I keep mentioning? Trust me on this - just do it. Hokulia usually has the same sort of summer help manning the stand as you'd find at the pool pulling lifeguard duty, but they usually do a quick, efficient job of making a mean shave ice! A few pro tips I can offer: get no less than five extra napkins, especially if you have kids chowing shave ice with you; get multiple flavors on your shave ice; take risks with your flavors (you won't regret it); and go one size smaller than you think you want. Seriously - the things are STACKED. You'll love the holes built into the tables for you to slot your cold, summer ice into so that it's easier to nibble! read more

Wow! What an awesome shaved ice It was so refreshing and delicious! Parked in the lot on the corner of pflumm and college. There will always be a line for this place, so prepare yourself! Got the "allota colada" (pina colada, banana colada, and strawberry colada) in a size "long board" for $5 + some change. Big enough to share! Delicious!! Minus one star because there was only one person working -- someone didn't show up to work, so not sure how reliable the service is. The kid who WAS working did a stellar job!!! read more

What?!?! Hawaiian style shaved ice and ice cream in KC? It's basically a food truck with a few permanent locations around town. We went to the College Boulevard location near JCCC. There was a steady stream of people wandering in on Sunday afternoon, but never much of a line. There are a few tables with umbrellas, though the angle fo the sun may not work out to your benefit. The table tops have cut out holes to drop your shaved ice into lest you tip it over and end up in tears like the little kid a table over. There are probably about 50 flavor options with many authentic Hawaiian options. My daughter tried the Tiger Blood but was not particularly impressed. I though the Lilikoi (passion fruit) was decent and the Pina Colada was very good. They forgot my third flavor, so Lemon Lime never made it. I added a scoop of Macadamia Nut ice cream for just $1. They put it at the bottom of the cup and it was really good and very silky and rich. I am curious about the other ice cream flavors (pineapple and coconut). Of course they have the obligatory vanilla as well. I think they should just offer the ice cream as a standalone item. It would really widen their appeal. As for sizes, there are three sizes, plus an unadvertised kiddie size. We all three had the kiddie size and I found it to be plenty large. I cant' imagine finishing off one of the normal adult sizes. The syrup was flavorful and evenly spread through the ice. I would say that backing off just a bit on the syrup or cutting the sugar a bit would actually bring their product up another star. Definitely a nice addition to the KC scene that we'll have to add into the Betty Rae's and Tropicana Paleteria rotation. read more

We love this place! We discovered it while getting sandwiches during a rainstorm. This family-owned business' service is always outstanding (friendly, courteous & informative) and the shaved ice is the best in KC! So many yummy flavors. My fave is the li hing mui (sp? - ask for Kerry's favorite), and the banana colada is a close second. And, you have to try the "snow cap" - not really necessary for the deliciousness factor, but definitely adds to the experience! A great place to bring the kids, or for a fun date night, or even if you're flying solo. read more

So happy to find a snow cone place that has ice cream too! Totally recommend the coconut ice cream! It tastes good with any flavor and really takes you to Hawaii. ;) This place has a TON of flavors which makes it fun to experiment. Snow cones come in 3 sizes. I always get the small, and it's usually still too much. The large is a 9" mountain of ice cream and snow cone - basically requiring a shovel to finish! read more

I was originally wrangled into going here during our lunch hour, and I must say, it didn't take much to convince me to go. However, I did tell myself that I was only going for moral support as I know I didn't need to treat myself to this delicious treat in that moment. I have zero will power because I ended up seeing the menu and couldn't say no so I ordered the Allota Colada (*sp). Not only that but the simplest menu items immediately took me back to Kauai because of the ice cream flavor options ie coconut and macadamia nut. I wish these were additional toppings and not flavors of ice cream, but I was still pretty pleased. I will need to go back so I can try a different flavor of with a scoop of dairy :) I'm sure I can convince my friend to go with again sometime soon and absolutely before the end of summer. read more

There are three things I know about Kansas summers: 1) It's hot 2) It's hot 3) It's hot When you combine heat + cranky kids + one hot mamma, you get the percent scenario for a baaad evening. Thankfully we have found the solution to our problems - Hokulia. We first moved to the area in late July 2016, and we passed by the little shack about 10 times before stopping by. I would blame my husband for wanting to "try new things" and be "adventurous." Pssh. I was too hot to care. Well, I was wrong. Hokulia is simply amazing, though it's not shaved ice. It's more like snow. Do you remember eating snow as a kid? Hokulia brings back all of those memories. Best yet, I feel like the quantities are HUGE and syrup not overpowering. I tried a new flavor recently (the horror), and it was amazingly good. Had it been a heavier hand, it would have tasted too overpowering. Hokulia is now my guilty pleasure. Everyone loves going there. The kids love it. My husband loves it. I love it. The only issue I have with it is that it's not permanent. PRODUCT: 5/5 Hokulia shaves their delicious treats from blocks of genuine poured ice - as opposed to cheaper blocks of compressed ice chips - which produces light, fluffy "branches" of ice that guarantee a perfect ice-to-syrup ratio in every mouthwatering spoonful. SERVICE: 5/5 This family-run business (Kerry, Greg, Claire, and Alec) does a dynamite job of making me feel welcome. For example, they call me by name, add extra-syrup for improved "flavor bang," and laugh at my arguably tasteless jokes. VALUE: 5/5 With four sizes to choose from, Hokulia is able to accommodate any budget and appetite. At 6'4" and 225lbs, I prefer the Big Kahuna in Pink Bubblegum for $6. This is hands down the best shaved ice I've ever had. The portions are GIGANTIC. You see a huge shaved ice get handed out and think, "Oh, that must be the large". Wrong! It's the small! The flavors are great and just enough. They also offer free sour spray or a "snow cap" of condensed milk frozen on top for 50 cents. The only knock is they don't open until 3 on Sunday. read more

The ice cream was good, but a very small scoop for $3.25. I had the hula pie and enjoyed it. The other drawback was I couldn't get a cup of water. They had bottled water for $1, but no drinking fountain or cups. I also expected a little more enthusiasm from the employees, since it's a brand new place. Overall, I may give it another try, but likely won't be a go-to. read more

This is the best shaved ice in be had since I was in Hawaii. They have so many flavors and everyone is always super nice! Whenever someone asks about a shaved ice place, Hokulia is the only place I recommend. While frantically driving around the parking lot in search of some highly rated shaved ice, the stand was no where to be found. We called the phone number, a very nice woman answered and informed us that they were closed for the season. There's unfortunately no way for them to update yelp, so here I am with the PSA!
