It's a holiday so I know things will be a little off and I was surprised that they were open! This is the first time ever coming in and I decided to get a pulled pork sandwich. On the holidays you have to carry out only I did not know that when I ordered but after I had already ordered, they let me know. I live nearby, so I figured that was fine. The place has been there for a long time. It did have a greasy spoon look. The inside needs an update. They need an update on that but at the same time if their main focus is food and most people don't care I guess keep it the same. The ladies waiting on me were friendly, but also seemed a little confused on what they were to do. The one lady said she was new, so I get it. I got a pulled pork sandwich, french fries, and they were out of their potato salad, so I got coleslaw which cost $1.50. When my husband and I got to the car I looked in the bag and saw that the coleslaw was literally two bites. I went to the local grocery store and got $.75 worth of coleslaw, which gave me a lot more. I personally like to put the coleslaw on top of my pulled pork. I got home and was very impressed with the pulled pork sandwich. The sandwich was huge and piled full of meat. It was a very good price and they gave you a lot of french fries as well. The only thing that I was a little bummed about was that their $1.50 coleslaw that I ate and two bites was actually pretty terrible. It was very dry and bland. I'm glad I went to the grocery store to get creamy coleslaw because the stuff they sell really isn't worth that price. Anyway, I would still come back for a pulled pork sandwich or a big pork chop because their meat has a great taste to it and the barbecue sauce was good. So if you feel guilty about eating Pork do not eat the rib tips or the pork chop because you will fall in Love and rethink your whole life beliefs. The BBQ meat was so juicy and tender my 89 year old mom could chew. I never had large pork tips so tender. Every bite was flavorful and soothing to chew. I will be back. I placed an order over the phone after viewing their menu on their website. They had quite a few options and a lot sounded so mouth-watering. I chose the Pork Chop & Rib Combo, which included 1 Pork Chop, 1/2 Slab Ribs, 2 Fries, and 2 Coleslaw. I also ordered the Huge Pork Chop Sandwich and that came with Fries. I had to get a good amount as it was for myself, my girlfriend, and my pup. I was told about 35 minutes for the order to be ready. I left moments after, as it is a bit of a drive. The order was ready right when I got there. That was definitely a plus. Usually BBQ Sauce is extra, but he was nice enough to give me a couple with my dinners. They do charge a little extra if you pay by card. The food filled my truck with a beautiful aroma for the hike back home. The Pork Chop was great! It hardly had any fat throughout. The flavor was so good, it really didn't need any sauce. The Ribs, which were Baby Back Ribs, were pretty good. I'm not a huge Rib fan, but I did need to douse them in a lot more sauce. The Fries were really good. I'm also not a big fry guy, but these accompanied the meal nicely. The BBQ Sauce gave the Fries extra points for sure. The Pork Chop Sandwich was a hefty size served with a piece of bread. The bread really made a load of difference to wrap around the Pork Chop. This one was about the same as the other. There just wasn't much fat on the meat here. With the size of them, you'd think a lot of fat would be present, but no! The Fries were about the same portion in this meal and just as good! My girlfriend had all the Coleslaw, because that's not really my cup of coffee. The service was prompt and friendly here. Overall, you get good portions for your buck at this place. My stomach was eating itself after Carnegie Deli in NYC refused to ship me a pastrami and tongue sandwich....so I begrudgingly "plan B'd" it for my fatty meal of the week. Called ahead for order to be picked up, arrived at the counter 15 min after call to pick up food, waited at counter for 10 min while the guy and gal chit-chat in the back. I mentioned about soup and was told no soup. What I see in the steamer was baked beans, I wasn't asked or offered any to add to my order at that time. My food was sitting out on the counter packed in a bag. Not under any type of warmer. Total was given $44.91. When he handed me the bag it felt very light for 3 half rib dinners. Upon arriving home and opening boxes I find very small half slabs, a small handful of hard fries (no extra sauce) ribs are supposed to be messy, make you use several napkins.This was not the case with Hog Haven. The coleslaw was very strong vinegar and thin sauce. I called the restaurant to talk with the guy, he says "we sell a lot of ribs, can't make everyone happy" Live and learn.....will stick with the out of the way places even if I have to drive farther next time...... It's best to order ahead so you don't have to wait. My disappointments were minor - the coleslaw was not given to us in our order and the fries were soggy. My suggestion would be to not put the fries in the styrofoam container which steams them and immediately makes them soft. Put them separate and I'm a fan. I won't order fries again. I was almost not going to order based on the negative yelp reviews, but I'm so glad I decided to try it anyway. First, the man on the phone sounded happy to take my order unlike many other places who make you feel like you're bothering them. We got the pork chop (bbq) with oven browns and Hawaiian baked beans. The pork chop was cooked perfectly, the oven browns (think if tater tots and seasoned fries had a baby) were super tasty and the beans were awesome. The $12 price tag is beyond reasonable for the amount and quality of the food and I couldn't be happier to support a small business with great customer service. The strange attitude of the cook/counter put me off totally when she had no clue what beers they served..."I don't know. Thankfully, our plate came out accompanied by a ton of fries and two little cups of coleslaw. First impression: chicken was impossibly juicy, probably due to the high salt content. Seriously, I almost bought another bottle of water. Ribs were tender, but obviously boiled since it lacked a smoke ring. The two of us still enjoyed the meal and really enjoyed the bites of coleslaw. Started coming to this hole in the wall 3 years ago after seeing the establishment on Chicago's Best. Family run business just over the IL state line in Dyer. Their pork chops are nirvana but way too big for me. My husband and I get the rib tips and share, then take the huge left overs home for 2 more meals. The ribs and fries are drenched in the most delish sauce. People drive from all over to enjoy this amazing down home barbecue. This was my first visit to hog haven and like other people said to, I called ahead my order for carryout. I ordered the full slab of baby back ribs. I had high hopes for some good ribs, but sadly the ribs were mediocre at best. I'll give them kudos for tenderness, moisture, and even the sauce was good. Unfortunately the ribs lacked flavor. There was no spicy or smokey flavor to them. Just bland and boring ribs. Now I've heard their specialty is the pork chop and I'm still willing to give them another try. So we went to Hog Haven today after reading the reviews here on Yelp, We must have gone on a bad day. The food wasn't horrible or anything but it wasn't fantastic like everyone here said either. My hubby got the Pork Chop Sandwich everyone raved about. He says it was seasoned well, I thought so too, but it wasn't juicy, in fact it was on the dry side. I had the rib tips, again the seasoning and sauce, excellent, but the meat was very tough. We had really hoped it was going to be awesome, cause the guy working there, was really terrific, pleasant and friendly. We loved the fact the store had letters and pictures all over it from various activities and charities. Just wish the meat had been better. Maybe on another day we will try back again. Saw this place on Chicago"s Best and liked what I saw. I just happen to be performing in a show in Munster, IN, which is right next door, so on a 2 hour lunch break the girlfriend and I headed over. What they are famous for is their GINORMOUS grilled pork chop, so, of course, that's what we had. OH. MY. GOD!!! Seriously amazing. Takes a little while to get your food, because they are made to order and they are like 3 inches thick and bone in, but it is SOOO worth the wait! Not really sounding appealing to me, didn't care to ever have one. I ate the half slab ribs, and my husband had the 1 1/4in thick pork chop. The ribs were so good, the meat came off the bone so easily and the fries were good, like any other fries. My husbands pork chop was so good as well, it was so big and thick so easy to cut through and juicy. The chop had a good flavor itself and had BBQ sauce on it. The BBQ sauce was good, not to sweet or tangy, just right. He had the beans with these potato things. The beans had pineapples in it, not used to it, but some others may like them.
