My friend and I visited the Hofmobiliendepot a couple of weeks ago when we were in Vienna on vacation. It's also called Möbelmuseum Wien or the Vienna Furniture Museum. The older name used on Yelp refers to the museum collection's history - as the imperial court furniture depository. In 1901, Emperor Franz Joseph commissioned a central storage facility for the imperial/state furniture collection. In 1924, some of the rooms were opened to the public to view. In 1998, the building was renovated and reopened as a museum. And decades later, the museum is still amazing. It was larger and more comprehensive than I was expecting! With 165,000 artifacts, it's one of the world's largest furniture collections and includes furniture from more than three centuries (including Viennese modern). Other than the museum being quite warm (that was pretty consistent throughout our time in Vienna and Austria), we had a great visit. It was interesting to learn about Vienna's history through furniture - definitely a unique way to learn about history. Admission to the museum is included with the Sisi Pass (which also includes the Schönbrunn Palace and the Sisi Museum and the Imperial Apartments in the Vienna Hofburg), but the sites aren't close together. However, they don't have to be done on the same day! It was a surprise highlight of our time in Vienna. read more
