If you've ever been in the Museum of Science in Boston, and in the Smithsonian Air and Space museum, this seems like a better-fied combination of the two. It is also, in my opinion much bigger, and its collections far vaster.
There are plenty of interactive exhibits and things kids would enjoy, but not everything in here is a kid magnet... Therefore, with some exhibits, you may not find yourself competing with a group of children on a school trip to see or experiment with a certain exhibit.
The collection of exhibits is really neat though. Some, are just artifacts behind glass, for instance, old radios, TVs, uranium glass, lasers, etc. Some are computer simulations, like the one of the enigma machines, and others let you actually experience something... I particularly liked the exhibit in the organ and piano room where a demo let you see different organ switches in action, and play a few keys. This half-crosses out the bucket list item of "play a pipe organ" It is very small scale, but similar in principle.
I also went to the High Voltage Demonstration. Unfortunately, I was not impressed by this, but to no fault of the museum. The demonstration includes a Van de Graaff generator, which produces large, loud sparks, and they have a "Singing Tesla Coil" which produces notes to songs with its electricity.
Had I not been in the "Theater of Electricity" in Boston's Museum of Science, my opinions would differ. Thing is, MoS also had a Van de Graaff generator, only it is three times as big, and produces larger, louder, awesome "sparks". As for the signing Tesla coil, while I found it quite cool, I was somehow expecting something out of the film "The Sorcerer's Apprentice". Even so, it was cool to see music from a Tesla coil.
Caution: I have been able to go through the entire MoS and Smithsonian Air and Space in a day, I need at least a third day for this place... IF you are staying in Vienna for a short time, then find out beforehand which exhibits will interest you the most, and come at opening. If, however, your stay in Vienna is more extended, then consider an Annual Pass, they are (I believe) 26 Euro, and will pay for themselves after three visits. read more
