Although it may be misnamed I'm all for what the Albertina Modern is putting out into this world.
Long ago I learned that "modern", when applied to art, means anything but the current day. Officially, it means the period spanning the 1860s through the 1970s. My personal preference is for contemporary art. The Albertina Modern straddles both lines with much success, focusing mostly on art created between 1945 and today.
Vienna has so many museums of such size and breadth that one's eyes and legs can grow weary just taking it all in. The Albertina Modern houses a fantastic collection displaying just enough for a visit of a couple hours. That is: it's perfect in size and though the art will leave you in awe, the experience won't overwhelm you.
Tickets to the Albertina Modern can be purchased directly or as part of admittance to the (larger, nearby) Albertina Museum. Because of the scale and scope of the Albertina Museum, I'd not attempt to see both on the same day; nobody has that sort of attention span.
This is a museum I'd return to often were it nearby and one I'd not miss were I making a return trip to Vienna. read more
