"Guns for the Good Guys" is illuminated in red on the front of the building as you pull into their driveway. This was definitely a first tonight. I have never been to a gun center before. (I would call this more of a gun metropolis though.) It was a really interesting experience. I've driven past Hoffman's a million times on the Berlin Turnpike and I had no idea all of the product that they have housed in there. Wow. When you walk in the main door, you enter a long hallway. If you look to the windows on the right, there is a live shooting range. I would like to check this out in the future sometime. At the end of the hallway, we made a small mistake. Don't get overwhelmed by the massive amount of guns and knives you will see or the bison head that is mounted on the wall. Instead, grab a ticket on the right. This is important. It took a while to realize that you needed a number in order to speak to an associate. By the time we realized it, they were about twenty numbers ahead of us. No one's fault really. They get really busy in the evenings. We decided to come back another day earlier in the afternoon. I'll update on that soon. What I can tell you is this- they have a really huge selections of firearms. The prices ranged from over $250 into the thousands. There were even gun alternatives like pepper spray launchers. They also have new and used products. Tonight's visit was more educational than anything. In terms of the shooting range- it's $30 an hour, $20 for a 1/2 hour. Gun rental is $10 an hour, $5 for a 1/2 hour. There are seven 25 yard lanes open seven days a week. There is a Range Safety Officer in the range at all times. They have over 100 rental guns available and eye and ear protection is always included. They also have silver and gold memberships for the range. As for classes, they focus on education and guidance. They have a calendar available on their website with available dates. Looks like they are booked a couple of months in advance. Book early if you are looking for a certain date. It will meet the safety class requirements necessary for the State of Connecticut's Permit to Carry Pistols and Revolvers application process. The permit will cover the purchase of rifles, shotguns, magazines and ammunition. Firearms, ammunition, eye/ear protection and a state approved certificate for passing students are all included in the class. Hoffman has a certified, professional team of NRA Instructors that will teach you the basics in a non-intimidating setting. They offer one on one range practice with a NRA Certified Instructor or Range Safety Officer. Classes are Mondays/Wednesdays and Sundays. Eight hours of instruction for $99. Sounds pretty fair to me. The things you learn on a Monday. Happy trails, friends.

Ask the Community - Hoffman's Gun Center

Is ammunition ever in stock?

Depends on what type of ammo your looking for. But first, I WOULD NOT deal with Hoffman’s. Bad outfit and do not recommend them.

Can I purchase a handgun with a temporary permit or do I need to wait for my state one?

I was turned away when attempting to purchase with a temp permit. I would wait until you have your card. I would also recommend literally any other gun dealer over hoffmans.

Has anyone ever ordered a pistol that was not in stock at the time? How long was the wait? Did someone at Hoffman's reach out to you when it came in or did you have to call them/stop in?

I've ordered several pistols not in stock. Some show up in a week or two, one Sig Sauer took over 6 months, but that's not Hoffmans' fault. I've also bought a number of guns elsewhere and had them shipped to Hoffman's. They take a day to check… Read more

I was lucky that Glenn was the RSO on hand, and that I picked a time when I was the only shooter on the range.

I recently took the pistol permit (one day) class with Joe and his staff, which is offered on…read morealternating Saturdays and Sundays. I found their groupon deal, which was one of the most reasonable priced places in the area. Joe was knowledgeable, friendly and passionate about what he does. They also offer add on services like passport sized photos and notarizing of your paperwork, at an extra (but nominal) fee. Additionally, they offer various other classes, like security training, CPR/first aid, self defense, etc. as well as 1:1 firearm instruction. Their classroom was a bit tight, as the class I attended had a large number of people in attendance. There wasn't enough space between the rows of tables and chairs to get up without everyone in the row needing to also stand up for the people sitting on the inside against the wall. A bit distracting, but that is my only (negative) feedback. Also, to note: the morning half of the instruction is in the classroom followed by a (lunch) break of one hour. Then, everyone is expected to meet up at the gun range (Delta Arsenal in Wallingford about 20 minutes away) for the hands-on portion of the class, where you get to shoot/practice with an instructor. I had assumed we would be shooting at the nearby gun range in Orange, but it wasn't a huge deal. Just might be helpful, so attendees can know what to expect before signing up. Most of the 2 hours in the range was spent waiting, as they do provide 1:1 time with Joe or one of his staff while shooting. You can shoot the basic hand gun or "buy up" to try a range of different sized guns for $20 extra. You get a signed certificate at the end of the class which you can submit to your city/town with your full pistol permit application and Joe makes himself available during that process, should you need help or advice.
