After three…read moresurgeries for cancer, my mother moved into an assisted living facility in 2013 for 14 months before she enthusiastically returned to independent living. Even though she had a pacemaker, her heart issues required nothing more than close monitoring by her primary care physician and cardiologist until seven months ago. She suffered congestive heart failure in June 2019, broke her pelvic bone in July and experienced a second episode of heart failure in September that same year. Each time, she entered rehab after being discharged from the hospital. Things seemed to be going OK until January 2020. Her heart failed again, but this time, her lungs were compromised. The hospital staff talked about rehab before steering us toward other options. My mother and I agreed that returning to assisted living with hospice care added to her care plan was the best thing to do. We chose Hoffmann. The nurse who evaluated my mother and approved my mother's admission was thorough, very professional and at the same time treated my mother like a dear friend. I arrived at the assisted living facility late Friday afternoon a few minutes before my mother entered her apartment. Hoffmann's staff had already delivered a hospital bed, a new wheelchair, an oxygen concentrator and other medical supplies. The admitting nurse stopped by later that same day to review my mom's treatment plan. My mom was weary but alert and talkative. As a result, I was hoping my mom would plateau for some weeks or maybe even months. However, that did not happen. Over the weekend, my mother's condition started to decline. Rajvir Sidhu, the RN case worker assigned to my mother, started visiting my mom multiple times daily. Her focus was keeping my mother comfortable while she closely monitored my mother's condition which was deteriorating from day to day. Hoffmann sent a chaplain and case worker to support Rajvir's care for my mom. I was surprised but welcomed these extra layers of care. Based on my experience, Rajvir was kind and compassionate throughout the hospice process... more like a daughter than someone assigned to a medical staff. Within four days, my mother lost all appetite and had difficulty communicating as her breathing became more difficult. An hour before my mother left this world to join our Lord, Rajvir was still hovering over her trying to make her comfortable. When my mother finally found peace, I was with her. After some quiet time alone with my mother, I called for Rajvir and she returned to my mother's room to confirm what I already knew. Rajvir's compassion then turned toward me. When I was ready, Rajvir stepped forward and helped guide me through the next steps in preparing my family to say their final farewells. Yes, I unequivocally recommend Hoffmann Hospice.

For sure, that good Reputation attracts and it looks good on the first impression. At the tour and contract signing Earnest assurances are given that set expectations for a high level of service and safety. Once moved in, the day to day is not always up to the same "high" standard. Virtually any resident can give examples on a daily basis. They may also say " it does no good to complain cause nothing ever changes" Maybe these issues are organizational and baked into senior residential homes. Some things are great, some are ok, others are sub-par and a few are just terrible and unsafe. It's a buyer beware deal. & On the upside, there are many staff who are committed to giving residents respectful, responsive caring service. These folks do their best in a demanding and understaffed environment.

Some nights I have had to wait over 6 hours for a nurse. During the day you can usually get a nurse within 1-3 hours. The food ranges from good to something that I wouldn't feed my dog all within the same day. Some of the nurses barely speak English. On a scale of 1-10 I would rate this place a 2. Some of the nurses are nice, and some of them get upset if you require anything. As far as Physical Therapy, some days you get it, and some days you don't. You just never know.

Kyle, on my left, was a chill and lay back PTA. His manner of getting me to do things was gentle. Cody, on my right, was my OT. His manner was more matter of fact, we're going to get this done. It is interesting that with such different ways of dealing with the patients, they were both so successful in my improvement. I am forever in their debt. My life has changed and they are a contributing factor. The facility is filled with people who truly care about the patients. From the housekeeping staff to the MDs. They are all top notch. With that said, don't look to them for pity when you want to quit, they will help you to get your focus back on the goal of safely going home. Thank you to all of those who helped me along the way. (My mother had mid-stage Alzheimer's, diabetes, and other issues.) The staff was always warm & welcoming, as well as competent. The food was varied and simply great! I often joined my mother for dinner or holiday meals. Although COVID-19 put a damper on a lot of things, Hallmark usually provides live entertainment, games, and other activities. Church services of different types are held on the premises. A beauty salon is also on the premises. I greatly appreciated the genuine caring of the staff regarding sensitive & emotional issues. My mother thrived during her stay here.

Trying to find the right assisted living facility for a loved one can be daunting. I can…read moreunequivocally recommend the Hallmark of Bakersfield. My mom, 80, was fiercely independent but three cancer surgeries made it necessary to either get 24/7 in-home health care or move into assisted living. We could not afford caregivers at home, and chose the Hallmark. What a blessing. The staff... care providers, housekeepers, maintenance workers and food services... were very professional and truly cared about my mom's well being. Fourteen months later, her strength and agility had improved to the point that she could return home and live independently. Six years passed, and last summer, my mom started having serious heart problems. After a brief stay in the hospital and physical rehab, she returned home only to slip and fall and break her pelvic bone. That led to more hospitalization and more rehab. She could not do the things at home that she needed to do to be on her own. I began looking at assisted living options based on referrals from a case manager at the rehab center. Wow... the typical charges were $1000-$2000 more per month than the Hallmark's fees. So, I moved her, now 86, back to the Hallmark. Many of the same staff members were still working at the facility. They were sincerely glad to be able to help my mom who was going through a tough time. There is a lot of trite talk from business and sports team owners about how their organizations are like a family. Those are just sound bites. However, the Hallmark staff does take great interest in the residents and treat them like family. I have seen them do this with my mom and countless others. My mom had more heart issues at the end of summer and had to be hospitalized, again. When she finished rehab, she was back at the Hallmark. The care plan had been changed to accommodate her specific needs, and she showed improvement through the holidays. Then, earlier this year, another episode of heart failure, but this time it was accompanied by lung compilations. At the hospital, after she regained some strength, she wanted to go back to the Hallmark. Hospice care was added to her treatment plan. I was hopeful she would find a plateau and maintain an acceptable quality of life for a while. It did not happen, and it became clear her condition was deteriorating. I saw Hallmark staffers at different times leaving her apartment with tears in their eyes. They hovered over her in her last days tending to my mom's every need until she passed. I can honestly say that the Hallmark family brought joy to my mom's life. You can pay a lot more for amenities at other assisted living facilities, but you will not get better care than the care provided at the Hallmark. They are good people.

Visited my uncle and upon arriving wasn't able to enter parking lot. Unsure so street parking it…read moreis. Gate entry is locked & you can only enter if they buzz or let you in. The front office can view you from where they are. You must call from your mobile phone since the gate button doesn't work. Sign says call, they literally mean by phone. Walk in & it's bustling with people whom reside there & staff. Some residents whom don't even know me literally verbally said they want to go home. My uncle with many others were in a hall having lunch. My uncle hasn't seen me in years & although battling with some dementia. He always knows my voice & once I removed my eyeglass shades he lit up. He even said seeing me made his day. He says he awakes confused & discombobulated unsure of why he's there. The some staff were nice & even helpful when I was looking for my uncle room, before I was told he was in the lunch hall. I inquired what the constant beeping noise was going on from nurse station to nurse station & was informed by some residents it was an alarm & they were lined up outside their rooms and told they couldn't go in their rooms unsure why. Asked two staff members one said the noise is communicating with each station? The other staff member advised it's from when the button is pushed by the residents in their room. That noise consistently going off will make you want to leave. I mean for 2hrs I was there not a bit of peace. Smh I commend good nursing staff. Some spoke to my uncle, he likes the attention. He has always been a ham. Good to see him smiling. Although not sure if he will remember I was there. His memory sadly seems limited & comes & goes on what he remembers. I will say that more attention to some of the residents that can't feed themselves & rely on being fed by staff should get more focus. I watched a women bedbound can barely speak, and was needing to be fed & given her water. She continued to say water please repeatedly and when I turned her direction the nurse whom was sitting beside her was talking to another staff member doing the same for another resident. Please remember to treat the residents as if they were your family or a child. Not neglected or ignored. May need to hire more staff that are qualified & not to overwhelm those that are there. They look as if they can definitely use the help. Even residents try to help them & they're there to be cared for. You pay alot for these places. Pay alot for the day to day care as well for quality it should match. Glad my uncle is in a place where family can visit him more he's close to the majority so they can check in on him & make sure all is well more often than not.

This hospital is like the stuff of nightmares. They absolutely made the 5 days I…read more spent there so traumatic I will Never recover. And on top of the misery I suffered at the end of it all . I laid in the ICU waiting to be discharged and found that all of my personal belongings had been stolen or disappeared ( they claimed). So my son had to go to Ross on New years eve night to buy everything I needed to wear to go home. It was the very worst experience of my 67 year life. And I will be hiring an attorney to file a suit for all the mental and emotional abuse that I endured. So any of the staff that was there for those 4 days should be expecting to something from my attorney soon. Traumatized for life
