Having lived in Germany, there is something special about the traditions around a hofbrauhaus. This is an international chain, and the one in Cleveland is well done. There were a few negatives on our visit, but the positives and the super evening we had here more than made up for them. It's right in downtown and so close to historic districts and Playhouse Square. The exterior looks like a place in Germany, both modern parts and historic house facade near the entrance. Inside is divided into distinct parts as well, with the main large hall having the stage, long group tables, small semi-private tables, and the bar area at the back easy to find with huge barrels. To the right of the entrance and restrooms are smaller rooms with low ceilings for events or quieter dinners. At the back is another small bar, plus outdoor seating areas off different sides. This is a German restaurant, and their menu leans into heavy meats, potatoes, pretzels, etc. The beer selection is traditional German styles as well: dunkels, helles, festbier, etc. They're also lower on the alcohol and heavier on the flavor so expect to get full here. Prices are reasonable for the large sizes, should you desire. Initially we had clearly frustrated staff serving our group and the shared bars, but once this was all adjusted, they all ended up being friendly and quick to serve. On our evening, there was a wedding party, which brought their own local band so the German umpah music was switched for rock standards and modern songs. This ended up being the highlight, as people were dancing on tables, and the close proximity of the stage made it feel like a private party for the few dozen of us left at the end of the evening. If you're a fan of German food, music, and beer, this is a fun substitute for flying to Europe.

We've never been before and came with friends. Decent selection of beers (6 or 8). Big open space with communal seating. Waitresses and barmaids trust in German bier house garb. Appetizers were OK. Fried pickles, sauerkraut, balls, and pretzels with beer cheese. Sauerkraut balls could've been fried a little more as they were a bit on the pale side. Meals were decent. My wife had chicken paprikash and spaetzle. She said it was OK. I had sauerbraten with spaetzleand red cabbage. The sauerbraten was good, but there was very little sauce with it, which was disappointing. All in all a decent experience and it could be a nice social event, but I wouldn't necessarily run back.

Walked here from the theatre. They are open a bit later so we wanted to grab a bite. This is layed out like 1 giant room with long tables and benches for everyone to share. Each bench table can hold about 8-10 people. And you sit with each other and it's fun. There was a band playing and everyone was loud singing and drinking and just having fun. The servers take pics of everyone doing the ski shots. Great atmosphere. When we walked in there was a table of about 10 guys doing a ski shot standing on the benches. They stood on the benches more than they sat. The rating is the food and atmosphere combined. Food is about a 1.5 and atmosphere is a 5. Server came over and asked us about drinks. We asked a few questions on the menu. We decided on 2 potato soups and split the garden flat bread. It's was late and we didn't want to eat anything too heavy. The soup was different big chunks of potatoes and a few veggies. Topped with pretzel croutons. Best part. It was ok. Filling. Not hot at all. Hate when soup is like warm. Bring me hot soup! The flat bread was meh. 8 pieces with cream cheese base and a few smattered veggies. It was like that appetizer veggie pizza you get at house parties with biz quick pizza dough. But that is way better. This was a cracker with cream cheese that didn't cover the whole flat bread and a few veggies. Price was about $37 for 2 pops and 2 soups and flat bread. Seems high to me. But prices are $18 for most things and higher. Parking is difficult and mostly paid cuz you're downtown.Patio looks great for summer. Maybe have a beer and enjoy then get something to eat at Becky's down the street.

This place is pretty cool'. Definitely has a German feel. We went here with friends for a late dinner and for the most part the food was really good. I had the schnitzel with a side dish f red cabbage. The red cabbage seemed to not be fresh. The schnitzel tho was very good. The service was very good and so was the pretzel and sauerkraut balls. They have a great beer and drink selection. Will definitely go back if I'm ever back in town

My brother recommended we eat here when we arrived in Cleveland for my nephew's wedding weekend! It was a Thursday night, so not a lot of people and the air quality was Very Unhealthy, but we traveled 6 hours and 30 minutes and were hungry! The atmosphere was amazing! You literally felt like you walked into a German Oktoberfest. Very authentic. As was the waitress's authentic attire. The food was just as authentic as the atmosphere. Absolutely delicious! We highly recommend this place if you want an escape from your current environment and want some amazing food!

What an absolutely fun location. Came here for the MAICON opening night party before the conference and had such a fun time! Perfect place for about 1000+ people. Had a signature martini espresso drink and it was yummy! Looked like the food was good as people were enjoying it. Definitely recommend it.

Hofbrahaus is a spacious bier hall and bier garden in downtown Cleveland. Indoor space mirrors authentic bier halls with bench and booth seating. The restaurant also has private rooms available for reservation. Outdoor space has several tables, swing for the kids, and is dog-friendly. Advance reservations are highly recommended, the restaurant gets very busy before events held downtown and at the Playhouse Square. The atmosphere is always very festive and jolly. There are frequently bands playing at the bier hall. The menu at Hofbrahaus is extensive with German and Authentic dishes including a variety of salads, soups, sandwiches, flatbreads, main courses. During my latest visit I tried KAESESPAETZLE "ALPINE STYLE" with a side of sausage. The dish was huge and hearty, but lacked traditional taste of spaetzle. It was almost too cheesy. The beer menu at this place is also long. The beer is served in very cool large beer mugs. The service at this restaurant is unfortunately not the best. My large group was promised private room which was cancelled last minute. The service was very slow, many items that we ordered were not brought to the table, and our witness continued disappearing. It took a very long time to get checks and food. It was understandable with the amount of people at the bier hall but also disappointing. I would recommend visiting this restaurant if you have a lot of time to spare. It is conveniently located next to the Playhouse Square so that you can enjoy it before the show. I also suggest that you try shot skis, which is such a fun experience.

Jaegerschnitzle and sausage tower

This place was fun! Good beer, great service, live accordian/oompa music (who knew anyone under like 80 still plays the accordion?? And plays it WELL!), people drinking shooters off a ski....it took us right back to Germany! Now, was the food AS good as you'd get from an old German Oma? Not quite. But it was fine, and there was a lot of it. I'd 100% go back and would recommend it to others. I'd just be sure to mention that while there's nothing wrong with the food, it's more about the atmosphere and experience.

If you come with the right expectations, you will have a great experience. This is a very accurate replica of the original Hofbrauhaus in Germany. It's very communal and the experience is meant to be a great drinking spot. You don't come here for good service or good food. You come for the awesome beers and the atmosphere. With that out of the way, four stars for the ambiance!! My husband who had been to the original, was excited to see the stein lockers and that the space really reminded him of the ambience. The beers were all tasty. Exactly why we came. The service was definitely on the slow side but it was delivered with sincerity. Definitely order the Pretzels with bier cheese!! It was delicious. The Pork Shank was GINORMOUS but plan for it to take at least 40 mins or more to serve. It takes time to properly cook something that big. It's big enough to serve three people.

The platters are chicken and potatoes above and jaegerschnitzel with spaetzle below (mine)

Meals at legacy eateries in NEO - 2 of 2 I knew that there was "a" Hofbrauhaus near Cleveland's funky art deco Greyhound station. I both laughed at and filed away that there was a German restaurant in this part of downtown. The locals all know about it. It's more of a beer hall with a beer garden out front. I like German food well enough and came here to have dinner for a friend's birthday. First, all the bells and whistles of a German beer hall will be front and center to greet you as you enter, meaning the bench-like tables, the woodwork, the flags of different countries, and even a souvenir shop. German food is hearty and filling. Much like Greek or Japanese food (strange bedfellows), I don't venture far from dishes I know, at least initially. And, in some ways, the underpinnings of German food are much like American food. That said, I ordered a jaegerschnitzel platter that came with spaetzle. My friend ordered a chicken dish, for which the preparation almost bordered on being Mediterranean. The food was definitely tasty, not to mention filling. The pricing was a little higher than average for these dishes, so 3 stars for that. The service was a slam dunk for 5 stars. We talked about how well the young lady who was our server did her job. This Hofbrauhaus is popular. It's often a destination for groups. Also, some people gravitate toward the beer garden to eat and drink under the canopies outside, at which your four-legged friends are welcome. Scratching my head as to why this venue might be located here has nothing to do with Greyhound, which they are moving out of that building that has a historic designation. Here, Hofbrauhaus sits in the midst of the main downtown business area, Playhouse Square, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the stadiums, and the city's urban 4-year public university. Thus, it makes sense. All of the various aspects blend out to 4 stars for this Hofbrauhaus. I've only spent 6 days of my life in Germany and I had an incredible jaegerschnitzel dinner that was on special for about 14 Euro and that's probably my gold standard for 5 stars in German food. However, this downtown Cleveland institution is reliable, likeable, unique, and even fun.

Ambiance is awesome. Very much a German beer hall. Beer is good. 16 Oz or 32 Oz. Large menu. Pork Roast looks good and the goulash soup. Service good. A fun place to hang out with friends.

This place is super cool and the environment is awesome. Just know that when coming here you are definitely coming for the environment and energy rather than the food. The pierogies are definitely the best thing out of the batch of food we ordered so I would order that if you are in between things or do not know what to order. I felt personally that everything just lacked flavor and the chicken sausage as well as one order of the pierogies came out cold. I was a bit disappointed as there weren't more house made mustards, on the table was just bottled yellow, stadium and stone-ground mustard but the homemade mustard and beer cheese dip with the pretzel were good. As for the sides, I would skip the sauerkraut. i was super excited to get some with my meal but it was just bland but the house potato salad was AWESOME and really unique and flavorful so I would order that if in between sides. This place is really awesome and could be a great place for a drink with friends and everyone is friendly and energetic. Just expect the food to be average or below and maybe stick with some shareables for the best experience!

Forest City Brewery is located in Duck Island (between Ohio City and Tremont) on the corner of Columbus Road and Freeman Avenue, with the actual entrance on the Freeman side. Inside you will find a series of different rooms, including a large Beer Hall, the main bar area and a great patio out back. The whole thing feels very real and industrial, funky, comfortable and truly Cleveland. Forest City has a nice concise menu of foods, in house beers along with a larger menu of beers and drinks. You order and pay at the bar, get your beers and a number that allows them to find you with the food. The patio is a large open space with trees and plenty of assorted tables and chairs and is very dog friendly. I enjoyed the house brewed beers; I prefer darker and more full bodied beers. All of the beers were very drinkable, smooth and nice finishes. The flavors are subtle and nicely balanced; these are great beers to enjoy and there is a definite personality that Forest City beers have. I was lucky enough to get tickets to the Comedy Festival late show on Friday. The show was in the main beer hall, a large room with a low stage on one side. The show was set up with seven comedians each doing about 7 minute sets and the headliner doing about 45 minutes. Overall an great show, a bunch of different styles and approaches. The headliner Elijah Nevels was excellent; a Cleveland local who tells great stories and hilarious jokes he had the crowd going for his whole set. I really enjoyed Forest City Brewery great beer, really well made food with traditional flavors and a really unique setting. I would highly recommend checking them out. Forest City provides a unique venue to host events; if you are a comedy fan you should look forward to next years Cleveland Comedy Festival.

Which I will get into. Pros: The staff was great. Friendly, got our food to us quick and explained the tap system for the beer for my friend in detail. The tap system itself is also a marvel for soemone who has not seen anything like it in their home town. Its quite fascinating and fun. The sandwiches there while not having a large variety, were still made to perfection and tasted amazing. Cons: the price for the drinks. You pay by the Oz for each drink. And while thats understandable, the prices per Oz were quite high. Some over .75 to almost $1 an ounce. Even michelob ultra was .25 per Oz. Meaning if you filled a regular 16oz cup, you'd still be paying over $4 after tax for a domestic beer. Even though the sandwiches were only $15 a piece on the menu, our bill was still over $80 because we wanted to try local brewery stuff and even though we basically only had 2 drinks a piece, they were over double the cost of the sandwiches, and that really grates on me. Im sure the cost is built in due to this system they have for the taps, but as someone who constantly has to weigh cost vs experience, I cant really recommend going to this place more than once. Its a fun novelty, but it will quickly punch you in the gut if you fill your glass each time.
