First time visiting this place and it was very good. It is very cozy and unique. The service is also pretty quick. They have free bread rolls with cinnamon butter and these were so pillowy and delicious. The menu is reasonably priced as well. I ended up splitting a 15 ounce New York strip steak with my husband and it was plenty of food for $40. We ordered the temp medium and I will say it was more like medium rare, but it was still yummy. Family dinner time. We were seated right away and asked for the hot, fresh bread and butter--it was great. Sadly, I didn't get a photo of the fried mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce, but they were really delicious--crispy and gooey logs of fried cheese. I swear I had been here before many years ago, but it's been so long so I came back when I was in the area for a late lunch. Luckily they have lunch everyday until 4pm. The exterior is like a large cabin in the woods. You park in a lot east of the restaurant and cross a bridge over a ditch and get to the main lot where the building is located. Inside, the interior is like a roadhouse with a lot of exposed wood and signs plastered all over every wall. Some are advertisements, some are catchy slogans, some are funny license plates. Either way, it's a lot to look at before waiting for the food to come out. I ordered the lunch chicken fried steak special for 13.99. They actually have 4 different chicken fried steaks, the difference is the size and quality of meat. The 13.99 does not use Nolan Ryan beef, but you supposedly can't tell the difference. The 3 larger sizes do. The largest size, a Texas size cfs is supposedly 10 oz. All come with 1 side, so I chose loaded baked potato for 1.99 more. All the meals come with a homemade yeast roll, whether you're here for lunch or dinner. When the food came out, it looked nicely sized and delectable. After taking a few bites, I started to realize that it was just way too much breading. The steak is pounded thin, and I do like some breading, but when it's just overwhelming and you can barely taste the meat, then you know its too much. So, I would either recommend ordering a larger version, or just skipping and ordering something else. The Chicken Fried Chicken is HOLY! This is the first place that has ever gotten me to wanna come back specifically for Chicken and gravy. Wow I had no idea this delicious place was so close to us. This restaurant is in Porter and I was blow away as to how good it is. The BOIDAN BALLS Were amazing!! I forgot to take a photo of them because we were too busy indulging. The fried catfish was so crispy and not oily at all. The same with the fried shrimp. I got the fried catfish and fried shrimp platter. My boyfriend got the ribeye tips and he said they were so good. The atmosphere was spot on the hill country ambience. Saw an old review that said smoking allowed... no longer true if it ever was. We have talked about visiting this location for almost 3 years. Finally did today. Not an upscale steakhouse but really good. The decor is mancave gone crazy. Good menu and plenty of options. Our server was Phillip and he was great. Friendly, appropriately attentive and efficient. I got an 8oz Sirloin with green beans and onion rings. My steak was thick cut, very lean and perfectly grilled. Everything fried was delicious! Diana ordered fried sirloin tips with jalapeño hush puppies and fries. We both loved our choices. Diana is highly allergic to all seafood and Phillip double-checked and assured us that seafood has a seperate fryer and she had NO issues! Our food was served fast, hot & delicious. Is anything fresh? Was the resounding question at the table. My neighbor decided that she wanted to celebrate here for an accomplishment. I guess she had fond memories of what this steakhouse used to be. To be honest the most I see this parking lot with traffic is during sports events. We walked in on a week night and it was roughly 20 people in the whole place. The orders were chicken fried chicken, steak bites with gravy on the side and a chicken tender basket. Everything came out barely warm, but the "gravy" was piping hot. They gave an extra baked potato instead of a an extra vegetable option as ordered. The chicken tenders were gummy and you could tell they were right out of the freezer. The chicken fried chicken, ended up being chicken fried STEAK. Even with that the waitress told my neighbor she simply "ordered wrong". So much for customer service. Her chicken fried steak was huge, but cold and could taste freezer, and bland. However the gravy was what was warm. Which leads me to believe they prep and freeze everything. When ordered heat it up and put hot gravy on things to make it seem fresh. Good service, love the atmosphere! But... I got a simple Ribeye steak, (I'm something of a steak connoisseur) and it was disappointing. The steak itself was a decent piece of meat, but prepared and cooked horribly. First off, they only lightly seasoned one side of the steak. Then a very light sear (enough to get grill marks on the face, but leaving the steak a light gray). Then the steak was VERY obviously just stuck in an oven until at temp which made for an extremely bland, chewy steak, and definitely not worth $36. I can cook up an infinitely better steak for half that price and a trip to HEB. The sides and appetizer of Fried Pickles were top notch. read more
