I just have to give the Hofbrau four stars. We went on a Wednesday night and it was quite busy. When we walked in the door, we were directed to the dining room. They're only a few people in the tiny bar area. I really wanted to sit in the semi circular booth, but we were directed to a rectangular one. Yes that leather is worn and personalized, but that just adds to the feel of Americana here. Our server was pleasant. On her initial visit she brought the menus. It took us a couple of minutes to decide what we wanted to drink. Before the night was over, I had a couple of apricot wheat beers (all beer is the local Otto's). I believe the wine comes from seven mountains and the spirits come from the local distillery just down the hill. I think that's pretty cool. We finally settled on an antipasto and a large supreme pizza. Pizza crust was a little limp, but the pizza toppings and sauce delivered a lot of flavor and satisfaction. The antipasto was a bit of a shock. I'm used to a platter with olives, cheese meat, and so forth, but this was more like a bowl of chef salad. Although it's only been a few days since our visit, all I can remember about it is the iceberg lettuce and the cheese mound on top. It was accompanied by a tasty balsamic dressing. When I got the check, we were all quite shocked. They were five of us and since I was paying, I was pleased to see the tab came in at around $65. While in State College for the weekend we decided to take a ride to Bellefonte for a quick bite and the check out the town of Bellefonte. The sign read world famous pizza or so I thought and pizza was just what we were looking for. Located right in the middle of town at the base of San Fransisco-like steep hill we had to find some parking which wasn't easy but we found some street parking right nearby. While the outside has an inviting, old time, small town appearance outside, the inside was amazing with lit up LED light across mounted tree branches that arched across the entire dining area in a warm glow over the private booths. We ordered our pizza and drinks and rather quickly our pizza was on the table smelling so good that we had a discussion about why it was different than the usual pizza. As we dug into it, the taste and crust was some of the best that we've had in a long, long time. We asked the waitress about the cheese and learned that it is a special blend of two cheeses that they prepare just right and it was quite obvious to us that it's true. The pizza crust was great as well just thick enough and crunch tasting oh so good. Price was great, atmosphere was great, service was small-town friendly and fun. We really enjoyed ourselves and would definitely come back!! Highly recommended as is the wonderful town of Bellefonte. read more

Came here as a "plan B" since the other Italian restaurant in town decided that their dining room would be closed for the evening, even though our party of 7 made reservations at said restaurant weeks in advance. But it all worked out. Hofbrau is a fairly small place, but we were able to squeeze into one of their booths. I had a good feeling about this place from the start - friendly staff, what seemed to be happy local customers with good looking pizzas on their tables, etc. I was not wrong. Out table shared an antipasto salad, a large pizza and some wings. All three were excellent. Here's my one small complaint, if you can believe it - the salad needed more lettuce. I never thought I would ever say that, but it was so full of yummy goodness like cheese and ham and salami that it needed more lettuce to balance it out. But somehow I managed. Pizza was spot on - nice light/airy crust. To top it off, they sell draft root beer from a local brewery. It was some of the best root beer I've ever had. This is our second time ordering, and it was so good last time! My second experience was one of the worst I have ever had. I never complain about customer service, restaurants, food, fast food, etc. To say I am disappointed is an understatement. My first time ordering I got texas ranch wings, so I got them again. They were not even close to the first time I ordered. Looked, and tasted completely different, I told them about it, and they said whoever made the sauce just didn't add enough ranch. That's okay. I was going to still eat them. I mixed ranch with them, I take a bite and there is an entire hair inside of the wing. Ok, I have eaten here a few times in the past, you can get the pizza down with enough bicarb on standby. Now, recently, on Wednesday January 3, 2019, I went there with 2 other guests for some pizza and sodas. The place was halfway lit. The "beer" neon signs were not lit in the bar area, and we were unsure if they were even open. I looked at the door, and saw no sign saying they were closed. The door to the bar was open. We entered, and quickly observed 7 patrons sitting at the bar, drinking beers. The woman tending bar looked at us with the most horrid disgust look she could conjure. I simply asked if they were open, and it was as if I was a serial murderer or something. She regurgitated, ...NO! Feeling extremely unwelcome, we decided to leave, visit another home pizza place in the area who was more than respectable. Their home delivery was great. We then decided to look to as many social media outlets as we could find, and report our experience. Were they closed? Did some local regular die and this was a wake or something? I considered presenting this to the Freshman class at PSU hospitality management 101, and let the neophytes point out the multiple fails in customer service. Due to this one servers' actions, I feel this is almost worth a campaign against this place. Believe me, if you are not familiar here, you will get second (or 3rd) rate service. So many other restaurant options in the vicinity. Respect yourself. You are worth more than being ignored for some local barstool regular in Bellefonte. read more

Really good pizza, one of my favorites in the area. Very relaxed atmosphere - you walk right into the dining room and seat yourselves. They have great specials: half price wing night on Tuesday (my personal favorite is the Italian Parmesan flavor) and a delicious pasta special on, I believe, Thursday (don't hold me to that one). Based on all the reviews I thought I was going to be blown away by amazing pizza, I was wrong. Got a pepperoni pizza and a buffalo chicken pizza. The crusts are soft and on the thicker side. The pepperoni is just eh, nothing really to make it pop. The buffalo chicken pizza is like eating red hot sauce with a chew factor. The cheese on both are so coagulated and greasy it pretty much all falls off grabbing a single slice. Maybe I'm missing something or maybe I've just had a broader selection in pizza but this is by far not the best. read more

I ordered a small Stromboli, you know the kind with melted mozzarella (in their case, they say provolone as well) and this is what the inside of the Stromboli looked like. Is the cheese melted? I don't know? Is it supposed to melt? Does it not melt? Based on this order, I have no clue. I know that in my life experiences with other Stromboli's, this is NOT how the cheese looks inside. Also, is there a cheese shortage these days that I'm not aware of? Terrible. I will not be returning. My boyfriend and I don't even bother looking at the menu anymore because once you have tried the supreme pizza there's no going back... although their other stuff sounds like it would be pretty good too. I used to tell people it was the best pizza in Centre County but when I really think about it I'm pretty sure it's just the best pizza I've ever had in my life (and that's really saying something because I'm a huge fan of the mac n cheese pizza at Ian's in Madison, WI). The thing is that with most other excellent pizza places, the reason I love them is they have bizarre but awesome types of pizza, like the mac n cheese one, or mashed potato pizza at Pizza Luce in the Twin Cities... With Hofbrau, there is no gimmick! It's just straightforward, really amazing pizza. Not sure what they put in it... crack? Anyway what really takes the cake and compelled me to join Yelp to write this review (seriously) was this weekend, when my boyfriend accidentally knocked the remaining half of our large supreme pizza to the floor... They brought us out ANOTHER PIZZA! We were a little horrified (it's a small place and it was really loud, haha) but the waitress was SO nice about it and it didn't even take that long! Hofbrau, you are incredible. I'm trying to think if there are any bad things about it... the decor is kind of old and grimy and the booths are pretty uncomfortable, but who cares. Once or twice we've had waitresses who have a kind of "you're inconveniencing me by your presence" vibe but for the most part the service is awesome. Decent selection of beer on tap, they usually have the current Sam Adams seasonal and a couple local beers (Elk Creek, Gamble Mill, etc) so that's cool. Also there's a teeny little bar where you can drink a beer while you wait for your pizza to go. Bottom line, if you find yourself in Bellefonte, I'm kind of sorry for you but at least you get to experience Hofbrau! Finally I get around to reviewing my favorite place to order pizza. Let's get to it! I will start by saying I have only ever had pizza and wings here, I can't speak to the other menu items. That said, there is a reason why I have only ever had those two things (primarily the pizza), and it is because it is my favorite pizza. As a simple creature, I typically go for the pepperoni pizza, which I love here for the way the pepperonis curl up at the edges when they are cooked. The crust has a nice airiness and chewiness to it and I am very fond of the quantity and texture of the cheese. The sauce is a bit understated, and some pizza fans will not like that, but personally I like this in my pizza (when I'm not ordering fancy, gourmet pizza mind you). 5 stars for the pizza. Service is good for Bellefonte. Going back home is always a little bit more of a relaxed atmosphere for me, with a darlin' or two thrown your way by the server. It may not be fancy, but it fast, personable, and pleasant. The only knock I have against the place is that the restaurant itself is a bit aged and I haven't seen it updated since I was a kid. This is part of its charm of course, but the tables in the dinning room, always feel a bit awkward to me when trying to find enough room for everyone's food if you go with two or more friends. Bottom line: every time I am back in town to visit my parents I get pizza from here. It is the best pizza I have eaten. read more
