Floor cracked and coming up due to incorrect installation
    Dori G.

Think Tony's price is too good to be true? There is a reason for that. We hired him to install all new floors after a flood in our apartment. Less than two years later all the floorboards were cracking and coming up. I even pulled a piece of floor out of my one year old's foot. We were trying to sell our unit and couldn't because of the state of the floors. We showed Tony and he said he would fix it, but instead somehow made it even worse and in addition to being cracked and coming up, the floors were no longer level. There were huge dips right in the middle of our apartment. It is also important to note that "fixing" took months of no-shows and last minute excuses, despite us making ourselves available 5 days a week for over two months for the work to get done. We had an independent inspector from the National Wood Flooring Association come do a report. This was expensive but we decided it was worth it to get to the bottom of what happened. The report is very detailed and states that Tony and his team installed the floors incorrectly both the first time, and again when they tried to fix it. We had to give the buyer to our unit a $15,000 credit so they could get all new floors installed correctly. I regret working with Tony because we lost $15K only two years after paying to install all new floors. If I could do everything over again, I would spend more initially with a more reputable business. Please don't get into the same situation we did by trying to save money -- you may lose in the end like we did. This was so incredibly stressful.

Tl;dr we paid and then Tony ghosted us and left us with an incomplete renovation. The photos are the end result. ***Now the full story if you want to read*** This was our first ever renovation project. We found HKB on Houzz and they had many great reviews, but we didn't know until after the fact that the negative reviews on Houzz do not actually get posted (as mentioned by another reviewer)!!! That's definitely misleading for the consumer, I'm surprised it doesn't violate some sort of consumer law! I will never use Houzz ever again. Now looking at the Google reviews, I think it's interesting seeing how many LIKES the 1 star reviews for HKB have gotten.. Anyhoo. SO when we were gathering quotes, Tony was super kind and most enthusiastic about the renovation that we trusted him and picked him to do the renovation for us. We needed to replace the flooring, kitchen cabinets and counter, and bathroom bathtub/vanity/toilet/tiling of our 1 bedroom apartment. At one point we went to pick some samples from Home Depot with him and he kept saying how beautiful of a renovation this is going to be and that he would treat this renovation as if it was his own place. He even held our 1 year old baby, he was just super friendly. We had no reason to doubt him at this stage. After 3 weeks of work that he allegedly oversaw himself, he said it was complete and requested the third and final payment. Since we weren't in town, we had a friend take a look at the work and he raised issues that needed to be fixed, so we didn't feel comfortable making that final payment yet. A week later his team addressed some the issues and very poorly at that. Meanwhile, Tony is still demanding final payment and even threatened to file a mechanical lien on our property if we didn't pay. He said it was standard to make final payment while he addressed the "punch list" items. We thought we could trust him so we made the payment. Then Tony's project manager, Charlie, reached out to us saying he would take care of the remaining issues. We sent all of the photos (same ones attached to this review) and videos of everything that needed to be fixed. Charlie said he would go the following Tuesday.. no one showed up.. then he said someone would go on Thursday.. again no one showed up. I messaged Tony and sent him the photos.. no response. Tried reaching out to Charlie again.. no response. What I feared had come true, i.e., we were ghosted as soon as Tony received the final payment and are now left with this really bad quality renovation that we'll have to hire someone else to fix. I just feel so disgusted thinking back at how we let this man hold our child and trusted him to do the right thing, but in the end he really screwed us over.

He said the job would take 5 hours and he would have to break the wall in my dining room to run the line which would cost $1350 plus an initial $175 consultation fee and said 1/2 the funds were due upfront so I paid him $700. Upon consultation, he noted there was an electrical box already sitting 2ft from the outlet and said if I can run a line from this box to the outlet I will only charge $175 consultation fee since there's not much work involved. He returned with a worker and was able to connect to the box next to the outlet, it took him a little over an hour to TRACE the line from the basement to the box, without have to break walls and run a hard line from the basement. He then charged me $905 and ended up requesting an I became upset. This is not what he promise. I asked him for a breakdown of what he's charging for, he said he charges for a minimum of 2.5 hours plus he needed an extra man (which he also charged for) for the job so the work was shared and both of them had to be paid and he's charging for materials?!?? There were no materials involved except that he relaxed the sockets. I did not pay him the extra $205 because to run a simple electrical line from a nearby box to an outlet does not cost $700! DO NOT pay the contractors any monies upfront. If they are legit and have a business, they should have the funds to cover the job and collect after the work is finished.

I can do a lot of work construction myself - so when it comes times to hire somebody I'm basically impossible to please because I always feel like I'm paying someone else too much to do a worse job than I could do if only I had the tools and time. Moreover, normally with the trades people it is really difficult to communicate, get a clear picture of the work, understand what sort of materials they will use and at what price point, and what the breakdown of their labor will be. Not so, with Alpha Electrical services. Konstantinos was wonderfully communicative, and friendly to boot. This guy even called me back while he was on vacation halfway around the world to make sure we had our work scheduled at the right time and day. On top of that, he sent me links to the materials he was going to install (several outdoor GFI outlets - some attached to my house, and some out in my yard and on my patio). He explained all of the electrical code protocols, exactly how he would run the lines, where he would put the boxes, and offered friendly advice about the best equipment and installation procedures. When the day came to do the work, Konstantinos arrived on time and although he worked solo - he installed two yard outlets, three outdoor gfi boxes, and had to run new lines from a new breaker that had to punch out of my concrete basement walls. Amazingly, he hid the wires wonderfully behind my sheetrock basement ceiling with almost no perceptible cut and the punches to the outside were clean, minimal, and sealed up beautifully. This guy communicated wonderfully, worked efficiently, treated my property as if it were his own, and did a job better than I was expecting while all along the way suggesting little tweaks and improvements without being a pushy salesperson. (He also treated my little dog who is very fearful with a lot of respect so naturally that earned him mega bonus points). In short, I basically never pay contractors to do a job and feel good about it at the end but this guy really delivered with a price that beat the competition! BTW Whoever this Dan R. guy is clearly is out out of his mind - my experience working with Alpha Electrical couldn't have been more stress free, seamless, professional, and beyond satisfactory both in regards to price point and end-product. I just wish I could find other contractors this reliable.

On January 8, 2019, I had the pleasure of being referred by Total Home Protection (more on that…read morelater) to Ahmed of Advanced Electrical Solutions LLC to repair an electrical problem when several outlets in my kitchen went dead. Although he told me he would come between 1 and 5 PM, he called around 4 to say he was running late. He came around 5 and stayed until the job was done. It was clear Ahmed was an experienced electrician who knew what he was doing. He checked the outlets and the circuit breaker panel, connecting and reconnecting various wires to diagnose the problem which he determined was both a defective circuit breaker and a defective GFI outlet. He then had to call Total Home Protection, a home warranty company, to obtain authority to make the repair for his fee. I overheard the conversation in which Ahmed advised the time spent diagnosing the problem and the costs of the replacement parts which seemed appropriate and reasonable to me. However, I was shocked to hear that the person he was talking to contested the requested charges and argued to bargain him down to a lower amount--which seemed unprofessional and cheesy. Rather than delay further, Ahmed had to accept the amount offered then had to wait (making me wait too) until it was approved--causing Ahmed to waste more time. Finally, Ahmed made the repairs and, since he found that the original defective breaker was actually was the wrong kind, he switched two breakers to ensure that the correct breaker was used. He also determined that the GFI outlet had originally been improperly wired and he corrected that too when he installed a new outlet. Ahmed completed the work quickly and neatly and checked everything to make sure all was working correctly, even though it was late and he had to spend more time than necessary (because of Total Home). In conclusion, I highly recommend Advanced Electrical Solutions. Based on the conduct of Total Home Protection and another problem I had with them previously, I do not recommend them and will not renew my policy with them.

He made a slight tweak that got the light working, charged me the full price from the original quote which all would have been fine if the light had then functioned for more than 12 hours. I called him the next morning to see if he could change the fixture like we had originally discussed and he said we could set up a time for that to happen. That was the light time I ever heard from Ahmed. After several texts and phone calls over the course of the month, I have yet to receive a response. He basically took my money and that was the end of it. You're better off not going with the cheaper rate and getting a licenses electrician that will actually get the job done. Honest work for honest pay. Definitely do not use this guy.
