Overall I think this is a sold no frills place to get standard diner fair; try it a few times and I'm sure you will find your 4 & 5 star favorites. Prices were reasonable. Breakfast ends at 11AM Our waitress Melissa was fantastic, she let me order a piece of goetta even though it was ten minutes past breakfast time. Goetta cooked on a flat top griddle is mandatory. I got vegetable beef soup, it was homemade and I liked that it was not overly salty, it's not fancy. I think it is made with hamburger. salted, allowing us to add salt if we want. The saltine cracks were enough to perk up my soup. The presentation was messy, I told you it's a no frills place, salad plate is a soup bowl here. Richelle got the BLT with fries. The Hobo Hut exceeded our expectations. The food was good and the service was excellent. A restaurant to be considered on a show like " Dives and Diners". Seriously, if passing through Batesville Indiana and you want a good and inexpensive meal, it's a choice for sure. I believe that they serve breakfast all day. Where do I begin? The ratings were so good that I had very high expectations. Word of warning. CASH or CHECK ONLY! I had a western omelette. It was on the smaller side but it was stuffed well. I had wheat toast & the slices were on the smaller side. The waitress was waiting on the entire restaurant so I give her kudos for being able to do it! She was efficient but not overly friendly. Went here on our way home from Belterra. Their fryers were down so our menu options were limited. We had the grilled tenderloin and a cheeseburger (no fryer meant no fries with it). The cheese on the cheeseburger was ice cold. The pickles were good. My husband wasn't a fan of his tenderloin but I thought it was good. I wouldn't go back though, as we were just passing through. If I could give a negative-10 that's what I'd give!! They are extremely racist! Took our 7 yr old grand daughter for breakfast (2 hotcakes with bacon, 1 egg and toast, side of hame and home fries. After 35 minutes I asked about our order waitress said they had a couple to go orders they had to get out. 15 minutes later we watch 3 yes 3 tables get served eggs, bacon, potatoes etc that arrived 20 minutes after we put in our order!!! Not at all impressed. The floors were covered in dirt and looked like they hadn't been mopped in days. The corned beef and potatoes were ok but the portion was small. The steak hoagie was bad as well. The "steak" seemed to be a ground beef patty and it was flavorless. The ketchup had gone sour. They also only take cash or check which is annoying. This was a little diner that we found during our recent excursion to Batesville Indiana. It's a rather small little joint and I was amused by the name so I was naturally gonna try it. They were out of a couple things that I was gonna order which is slightly annoying but that happens with smaller restaurants like this one. I ended up getting a fish sandwich which came with tartar sauce and cheese. They really put a ton of the tartar sauce on there too which even though I love tartar sauce I even had to wipe some off. The fish itself was kind of below average and probably not even as good as a McDonald's one. The onion rings and cottage cheese were quite good however. Also I took a bite of Pork Tenderloin Sandwich from Sam and that was a lot better although was a little bland and needed some sauce like a hot sauce to help it out some. Also note this is a cash only store which is not well marked so be aware of that. There is some potential here but I found my experience to below average. I stopped at this restaurant today as I was just passing through. Didn't realize that they did not accept credit cards. Waitress said not to worry, that she would cover it. After leaving I went to ATM and withdrew cash. I returned to restaurant and gave the waitress a good tip in hopes that she would pass it along to the next person that didn't have cash at checkout. Ordered steak hoagie to go. The bun was soggy, not toasted as I remembered. It was mediocre and found a hair in one part of the sandwich. Needless to say I was longing for it as I remembered it and it was not even close. I will most likely not order from here again. Maybe breakfast is better. Good luck! read more

Had lunches and breakfasts here. Good food and good service Young girl we had who's grandmother was there too was awesome-worked whole front by herself. Very effective. However only takes cash - with no notice anywhere. Would have been bad if we had not had cash. Some people carry no cash. We will return before we leave. Have eaten here many times have always enjoyed the food and the service not today, it was busy but when the waitress went to wait on the 3rd table that had come in after us I spoke up. She took our order came back and slammed down our water glasses. Waited another 15 minutes for our order, she also slammed the plates down had to ask for silverware and then discovered the food was cold! Was still trying to eat it when she went to another table and started complaining about us!! That was the straw, I took the check told her to charge me whatever I was leaving she said no charge just leave got a sarcastic have a nice day which I answered with too late you ruined it. I have NEVER been treated like this in any place I certainly in all my years of waitressing have never seen anything like this. Have never ever left a restaurant without leaving a tip!! When you work for tips your always tip generously, I certainly will not return, I have eaten there probably at least 2 dozen times in the last year so she certainly cost them. read more

Full disclosure. One of the proprietors is a childhood friend from 60 years ago. Being said, the Hobo Hut offers great food, large portions, at a fair price. Not fancy but you won't go hungry or broke. I enjoy the tenderloin and the goeta when we visit Batesville. read more

Be prepared to lose your day. It's a breakfast/lunch diner with horrifically slow service. Horrifically slow! My husband and I were there for a full hour before our food arrived. They do not take credit cards. Cash only and no warning that they do not accept credit cards. It's beyond greasy spoon comfort food, it's a digestive system hostile take over! The food didn't taste bad, greasy but not bad. It was the hours of digestive distress that makes this place less than appetizing. After spending nearly 2 hours of our morning in this retro nightmare it was a race home, praying to make it to the 'facilities' in time. That's where another 2 hours were wasted. I have been here several times and always enjoyed it. My most recent visit will be my last! Tables were dirty even after being "cleaned" and the others still had plates and food piled on them, and our silverware was dirty. Tried ordering 5-way and coneys only to be told that they only had chili for the coneys. When the food arrived the coneys were served on hamburger buns, covered in chili with beans and onions! If I'm not mistaken that is the same chili used to make a 5-way so I'm lost as to why we couldn't order one. Not to mention we ordered 2 with no onions for my son so it would have been nice to know that onions were IN the chili. The fries that came with our order were EXTREMELY over cooked. The ham hoagie I ordered came with onions that I did not request which tainted the taste, and the bun was as hard as a rock! When paying we were asked how everything was. I told them it was terrible and was given my change and told to have a nice day. Not one question asked! She could care less! So after $25 and 90 mins of our time we are going home hungry! read more
