Big four is so popular that there was an hour wait for a table the first time I visited. Today, we visited just before closing and got in easily. The cafe is located in the converted historic ROM Webber furniture factory. The Big Four cafe name honors the railroad line that used to pass through town. Courtney, our server, was friendly and attentive. She kept water filled and checked on us frequently. Food came out quickly. I had the Herb and Garlic Chopped salad, which was beautifully plated, fresh and delicious. Romaine, tomatoes, onions were topped with cheese and avocado. The garlicky vinaigrette dressing was tangy. I I also had a cup of the Texas Chili, which was topped with cheese and jalapeño slices. The beef was tender and the soup base slightly spicy. My husband had the Cuban Press (at Courtney's recommendation) and it was tasty and hearty. The sandwich was made using Indiana ham, slowed cooked pork and melted cheese. He said his sandwich was an easy 5 stars. Don't miss the beer battered onion rings which are fresh made and delicious. (I stole a couple of his rings.) There are roomy restrooms with changing tables. I was staying in the general area and was looking for a breakfast place. The closest small village did not have any breakfast restaurants that were open. I noticed the good reviews so we drove an extra 10 minutes which turned out to be a worthwhile decision. Excellent spot for breakfast and the full dining area supports my opinion. I had the breakfast quesadillas which were delicious! My friends had a breakfast combo which she said was excellent. The server was patient and helpful as I vacillated between options. In my opinion, this is one of the best places to eat in the area. Casual and family friendly environment suited for any groups. We ordered the sloppy James with fries and the beef cheesesteak sandwich with onion rings. We also had water and coffee. The coffee was OK. Let me start by saying the portions are large and well worth the money spent. The sloppy James is quite good and I heard it's quickly becoming one of the more popular things on the menu. You definitely want to be hungry though because the sandwich is equivalent to 2 regular size sandwiches. It's not the rich, old school tomatoey sloppy Joe you may remember. It is full of flavor and topped with cheese. The fries are average and on the thinner side (NOT shoestring). The cheesesteak is also huge! Best cheesesteak I've had in the tristate area, in fact. Loaded with beef, onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms. I opted for mayo on mine as well. The steak wasn't super chewy and no hard gristle pieces, which was terrific!!! The onion rings were made with red onions, and honestly, the best I've ever had. I'm an onion ring snob! Just a hint of sweetness, with the most perfectly delicate and crisp batter. Why wouldn't you use the other room for these groups and cycle out everyone else and increase turn over of people who want to eat and leave and not sit and chat for 30 extra minutes. We experienced the worst service. A little back story, we attended a funeral. Several of past co workers attended and we agreed to meet for lunch and drinks. A total of about 11 people. When we arrived the first person refused to let us sit with the group. The restaurant was not busy and we were not impacting any traffic flow. After a lot of huffing and puffing, eye rolling a table was added and we were allowed to sit. I had never been to this restaurant and did not know what was available to drink. I order two things not available and was told to go read the board. I read the board, placed an order and the server brought the wrong drink. I drank it anyway. Initially we decided against eating, however my wife decided she would like something. This ticked off the second server, more visible agitation. She said what do you want, again having never been there how would we know. She stomps off to get a menu. After finally ordering, they wee out of fries so they just gave her potato wedges. Which is t that bad, but notifying versus executive decision would have been nice. At time to pay, a colleague was charged 19 dollars for two cokes and a beer. Should have been 12 dollars. That had to be sent back to obvious disdain. I did not leave a tip, counted out the exact change. Granted, that was probably rude. But I will never go back. read more

Ordered soup n salad combo. Salad was fresh with romaine, tomatoes, red onion, balsamic vinegar. Soup I ordered was Texas chili. While it was labeled as spicy, I did not find it spicy at all. The salad was good, but boring. It could have used a little something extra to make it special... like sunflower seeds or radishes. There was a lot of red onion on the salad so I scooped it off and put it on top of the chili because it was a good fit there. The chili was made with ground beef and black beans and had nice flavor The red onions I took from the salad went well with the cheese and jalapeños topping the chili, the soup and salad combo came with crackers, which was nice. What a wonderful find in Batesville!! I was at Sunshine Sisters (a darling plant and gift store!) and checked Yelp to see what was near me. Luckily Big Four was just across the street!! What a wonderful surprise!! I ordered the Cuban sandwich with onion rings both were great!! What I loved is the waiter was passionate about the menu! I always ask staff what they love and it's telling to see what they say! He was attentive and made sure my experience at the restaurant was a positive one! Customer service deserved more stars!! What a gem of a cafe, hidden inside a remodeled old furniture factory. The service here was impeccable. The food tasty and fresh. $70 fed six of us, not a bad value for breakfast. The pancakes are huge! Chicken and waffles were very tasty. But the best dish is the breakfast quesadilla. 12.99 and loaded with meat and more. So damn tasty. I'll start this off with saying if your thinking about going here for breakfast, call now for a reservation as odd as that may seem. They seat reservations first and it seems to be their preference. We were asked if we had one and felt as in inconvenience because we didn't. There was 7 tables with a reserved sign on the whole time we were there. It seemed so odd to me considering it's a small breakfast place, you'd think you'd want to take care of those who came to eat. The food was pretty good for breakfast. We all very much enjoyed the gravy. The sausage was a bit off looking as if they stuff it themselves or something. Our waiter was great and very tentative during our visit which was great. THE STAFF WAS THE WORST I HAVE EVER SEEN!!! It started with the partner/hostess mad about us all wanting to sit together. Aggressively pushing chairs to the table making us feel bad for us telling her we wanted to sit with together. The waitress was rude and angry that one of the couples that came a little later wanted to order food. Then over charged for just drinks and once questioned, was angry and when she brought the change for the in correct charged amount, there was no apology and she just aggressively put the money on the table and walked away. Our whole table was very upset by the actions of these workers. I asked for the manager. The other partner came out and all he did was say "sorry". I explained we were there after a young man's funeral who just lost his battle with brain cancer and wanted to mourn and visit together and the fact of how we were treated for his staff that shouldn't have been so angry to do their jobs that now none of us will ever go back there! The Big Four is a treasure in Batesville, Indiana. Casual atmosphere with an upscale menu. It's a little pricey but totally worth it. The potato hash (deep fried cubed potatoes that go on the flat top with red onion and green peppers which are optional) is hands down the best breakfast potatoes I've ever had. My husband had an omelet with eggs, sausage, spinach and Brie and he loved it. Service was quick and attentive. We'll definitely come again next time we're passing through. read more

Big Four Cafe has become my go-to spot for meeting friends halfway (between Indy and Cincinnati). There are a variety of food options available, even gluten free options that are clearly marked and options that can be made gluten free (by subbing bread for gluten free bread for example). The food has been good each visit and my friends have all seemed to enjoy it, too. This last visit, I had the arugula and apple salad and added pulled chicken to it. My plate was a large version of the salad. With the chicken, it was pretty filling! I do wish there had been more Apple slices, though. My friend who also can't have gluten ordered the savory waffle as the gluten free option. (It was marked as such on the menu.) It looked amazing and she said it was really good! She did start having a reaction, though, not long after we left. So I'm not sure if there was cross contamination or if she didn't actually get a gluten free waffle or what, but I personally wouldn't risk it on my next visit based on her experience. Big Four Cafe has very delicious food. No... I'm serious.. it's one of those places you choose on a whim and it ends up being a family favorite after a single meal(or after you go there two days in a row for your 3 day vacation.) My first meal was the 4 eggs, 3 bacon and 3 sausages and the Nutty Monkey special. The French toast was filled with a creamy banana peanut butter purée and a healthy helping of powdered sugar. Bacon had an ideal crispiness, scrambled eggs were cooked in a pan and folded over once so the outside was slightly firm while the inside had a pleasant custard texture. The sausages had a nice snap to them as well. My second day I went for the Big 4 BLT. My only complaint would be to toast the hoagie a little bit but other than that the tomatoes were freshly cut, the bacon was just as crispy as the day before and the lettuce provided a lacy texture. I ate with my family and was able to try the BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich. I took one bite and ordered another one to eat on the plane home! I was staring at that sandwich like the one ring. Pancakes are the size of dinner plates and they have many inclusions to add to the batter! The first day we were here during the Indy 500 so they were quite busy but the wait was only 30 minutes or so. They served us quickly and everyone enjoyed the home town ambiance. Daughter had the chicken alfredo she ate half of it and for an 11 year old if she ate all of it she would explode! Wife had the make your own burger and it was excellent and HUGE! This was a superb little restaurant in Batesville Indiana. As I learned reservations are very necessary for weekends but once you get in you're in for a heck of a treat. First of all the restaurant is really awesome looking and I thought very highly of the service we all received. They have a lot of unique looking me menu items and I went with a suggestion from the waitress which was the Fried Po Boy Sandwich. Your meat is a choice of either 3 fried chicken tenders (my choice this time) or you can get 3 beer batter butterfly shrimp, or a beer batter Alaska Pollock Filet. They all sounded like amazing options but I could only pick one so chicken tenders it was this time. The sandwich also included tomato and lettuce which I ended up taking off because I don't like those things. It came on like a hoagie bun type of bread. The tenders had tremendous flavour in the breading and they were juicy as could be. The sandwich didn't come with a sauce which made the sandwich kind of dry but I added some mayo to it and that really helped. The platter came with onion rings and they were quite simply the best that I've ever had. Buffalo Wild Wings has been my very long standing favourite onion ring but these beat them out. The breading tastes very similar to what Outback puts on the Bloomin Onion and it was freaking phenomenal. I generally like a dipping sauce for onion rings but these were so good that I didn't even want one. A great meal and overall a great experience here and I will 10000% be back here. read more
