Time to reflect a bit on our weekend: Anytime you're in the mood to REALLY treat yourself to an amazing steak - do yourself a favor, stop by Hobe Meats (near 16th St. and Bethany Home) and buy a couple of their top of the line (in my opinion) Filet Mignons! Traci and I have been stopping in once a month or so for the past few years - and we always say the same thing: the consistency of service, selection, quality and taste - it just doesn't get better! I've threatened to write a good review on them for sometime, but never got around to it... but today was the day - as I looked at some pictures I had taken over the weekend - and there they were - perfect Hobe steaks, cooked and ready to come off our little Weber grill, salt and pepper only, ready to 'rest' to be joined and enjoyed by a couple of their HUGE baked potatoes and a bottle of our favorite red wine! The taste of our Hobe steaks is as good or better than ANY of the big steakhouses! And you get the added benefit and 'warm and fuzzy' about doing them in your backyard to suit your exact and specific taste. No excuses on too done, too rare, etc. You're in control! No complaining! Just use common sense: make sure you have a hot fire (I used the mesquite briquettes I bought in the store), 6-7 minutes a side (medium rare guy), let them rest for a few minutes while you doctor up your potatoes and side dishes, and then my trick is to plunk them back on the grill for 30-45 seconds a side and serve them sizzling hot with your meal. A-MAZ-ZING! Trust me - you'll be a believer in the quality of the steaks at Hobe Meats and be going at least once a month like we do! Enjoy! read more

What a bummer. I've haven't been shopping exclusively here for that long, maybe for about 6 months. Things seemed great at first, no issues, delicious steaks etc. Then I purchased a Butchers Special which was a variety of frozen meats for $65 and most of the product was frost bitten. I called, they were relatively nice and swapped out the package, no problem. Ok fine, no worries, it happens. Then yesterday I buy some N.Y. Strips and 1/2lb country sausage for breakfast. The sausage looked a little off in color and texture but what the hell do I know, I'm not a sausage expert or a butcher, so I started cooking them. BIG MISTAKE! All of a sudden there's this horrible smell wafting through the house! I thought I was going to throw up Again I call and it was like no big deal. Oh yeah just come in, we'll give you your money back. Nothing about selling rotten pork products, and an attitude like I'm being high maintenance. Dude, whatever. I miss shopping at a butcher store but I think I'll pass on this one! You just might want to do the same. read more

Good meat, the prices are irrelevant because there is nothing comparable in the area. I wish they were more of a friendly neighborhood butcher. Nothing worse than feeling like you're inconveniencing someone at their own shop. I asked if they carried top sirloin cap and which they do. I asked the butcher to slice it into 3 inch thick strips, which it turns out they cannot. Thanks for providing good meat. OMG!! Been working nearby for 2 months and kept forgetting to stop...until today and I'm OBSESSED! Friendly service, huge selection, reasonable prices and clean shop. I got the Biltmore Sandwich (make sure to get the horseradish sauce) on a Pretzel Sub with Bacon Mac N Cheese and a can of Coke for $10. Ridiculous!! Protect it like a prisoner, don't share! I've been here twice and have had terrible experiences both times. I was the only person in the cafe when I made my order. Both times people who came after me and ordered after me, got their food before me. Then they just make excuses about why it takes so long. I asked to speak to the manager and a lady "claimed" to be the manager. She did NOTHING to resolve the issue except make more excuses. I love having a local butcher and love giving them my business. Much better meats than the grocery stores. Friendly staff. My biggest complaint is I sure wish they'd take Covid a little more serious. The staff usually wears face coverings, but I believe in the last 6 months when I'm in there, I'm the only customer wearing one. I get it... "muh freedomz"... but at this point with the cases literally setting new records, maybe it's time to say to yourselves "hmm, maybe I should actually try to be responsible and care about other humans for once." I had forgotten how much I love Hobe Meats and was pleasantly reminded the other day. Growing up in the Midwest, I am used to a butcher shop that cares about their cuts of meat as well as the quality and Hobe Meats does not disappoint in that regard! I had a Groupon to use and the gentleman who helped me made sure I used my full value (btw, the Groupon is only good for Prime meats so be sure to ask for direction before you started choosing cuts). Every member of the staff was friendly and knowledgeable about every cut of meat. Also before you go check their website for specials. I got 2 lbs of Ground Beef for $4.99 and petite sirloins for $6.99 (originally over $14 a lb!) I got a porter house T-Bone, a ribeye, 2 Iowa Chops (you cant get these anywhere else but a butcher shop), 2 lbs ground beef, and 2 lbs petite sirloin all for $82, minus $50 for the Groupon, and out the door at $32! Just an FYI, all of their prime beef is between $15-19 per lbs with most steaks being 1+ lb. But once you go prime, you ummmmm want it all the time? Our Ribeye was aaaaaaaaamazing. If you are looking for a place with great quality meat and knowledgeable meat persons... this is the place to go. This is the only place I know to go to for a great hangar/hanger steak. YUMMMMM! My dogs also love this place, since I brought home a giant bag of doggie marrow bones for their snacking pleasure. A lot to like I received a Groupon and later bought another one for myself. Loved their meats, but the prices are exaggerated. Good cuts of meat are about 30-40% more expensive than regular butcher shops I usually do business with. That being said, these folks have some unusual meats as well, if you're into alligator, ostrich, snake, or other edible critters. My ribeyes weren't anything to brag about, even though I prepared them sous vide and that should've ensured delicious results. I bought meats from Trader Joe's and Sprouts, and those ribeyes came out right. This may be due to lack of additives (that would be a plus), or it could be something else. Either way, my ribeyes were not yummy, although I thought I chose some excellent-looking ribeye. Flank steak is where it's at, but they were selling for 13.99 a pound while Sprouts had a sale for 5.99, so guess where I took my business... Even now, Sprouts still costs about 40% less. I haven't gone back for more because without the Groupon, I don't believe they can keep my business. I'm giving it three stars mainly because they are much more knowledgeable about the product and were able to share some good advice. read more

I can't say enough about this butcher shop! Great service. They remember your name... This goes a long way in my book. If you need something special, or a cut a certain way you can call ahead and they will have it prepared for you. Great selection of prime and choice beef, chicken, pork, sausages, etc. Also, stock bones and organ meats in the freezer. Individual portions of flash frozen fish are delicious and affordable. Although they are very busy right now, I think there is some price gouging going on with the recent epidemic. 8 dollars for a loaf of bread? 10$ per pound for chuck pot roast?? 10 dollars a bottle for bbq sauce? Maybe I'm wrong but that seems high. It is my "hope" that these raises are NOT meant to take advantage of people who are panicking and vulnerable. Stopped in after having driven by this place for years. So happy I did, had the most delicious Reuben sandwich. It was perfect the meat wasn't fatty, it was plentiful, the marbled rye was fresh and delicious. The sandwich came with your choice of side, I picked deviled eggs, which was six, and a soda. $9 Husband had the pulled pork sandwich, he devoured it , along with a delicious side of spicy Mac & cheese $8. Will definitely stop in again, as I woke up this morning I was thinking about the sandwich . Staff is super friendly, the meats in the market side looked great. Not standard grocery store butcher shop meats (at all) and the prices are reflective of it. However as tasty as our sandwiches were, will definitely swing back for a special occasion to pick up one of their delicious looking T-bones or New York steaks. read more

We had a Groupon, so we gave this place a try. It is a small shop. And the Groupon is only valid on the PRIME cuts (which is, of course, the most expensive). We have not yet grilled the steaks, but we did try the linquica sausage (it was very salty). I will update this review after we've tried the steaks. Don't go on a Saturday or they'll yell at you because you asked for an opinion... I was so excited to go here. I love to cook and was planning to make a really nice Gordon Ramsey recipe for my boyfriend's birthday. The recipe called for short ribs and I researched places the last two weeks to buy the best cut of meat I could... I walk in and there were a few other people waiting. The gentleman at the counter said it would be a minute and I told him it was completely fine. He was super friendly and tried to make some light conversation. A lady then walks out and asks if anyone could be helped, so I asked her if she had any short ribs. She said they didn't have any.... And then this is where things got weird. I was trying to explain what I was trying to make, she interrupts me and starts yelling at me. I look at her and ask, "Do you have anything else I could use?" She continues to yell at me, interrupts me and I tell her, it's okay, I'm just going to leave. She's STILL yelling at me as I'm leaving and it's the most embarrassing thing I've ever experienced. Saying, "that no one is going to have what you're looking for." I look at her and yell back, since Ive already opened the door at this point, "I was only looking for an alternative!" And she's STILL trying to argue with me?! She replied, "NO, you did not!" I've never been so confused, embarrassed and down right disappointed in a place. I will never return. I hope, they hire more people like the gentlemen who I first encountered. I should have asked to speak with another associate, but I didn't know what to do while someone was literally yelling at me, for asking what else I could use. We ordered a prime rib and twice baked potatoes for pick up on December 24. It was ordered December 1 and double checked on December 14. When we went for pick up, the store was crowded and the staff used no mask protocol. They had no record of our order and had to do the prime rib on the spot and we were told they were out of potatoes. The guy in back of us also had the same experience with his order. While their meats are good, service and owner and staff attitude is horrific. I will not be back. read more

This place is divided into 2 parts a deli and a meat counter. First the deli. The sandwiches are amaze balls! The tri tip sandwich is my fave. The meat is tender and flavorful. The horseradish sauce its it the right amount of tanginess. I work nearby so this is a once a week treat! Be ready to wait at peak lunch times as it may be a little slow. The meat counter: the meat quality is top notch. I bought a couple of steaks, Italian sausage, and liguica. They were all good. Not a bad choice. I heard they say vegetarian is an old Indian word for bad hunter. And if you suck at it, Hobe Meats is your thing. I'm not good at killing meat unless you count devouring them as a kill. And in my other case, you'll see me here frequently salivating over the various cuts of meat...Waygu, bone in ribeye, tri tip, filet, slabs of burgers and bacon. And there are samples of their homemade beef jerky! They have the best cut of meat you can find outside of the fancy restaurant. Reasonably affordable for the fresh kill not available at your local grocers. On Saturdays in the deli side of the store, they have BBQ and offer lunch specials with chips and soda for $7. You can't beat their generous portions and friendly meat loving staff. And if you are still hungry you can just wander back into the butcher shop side.
