We were tempted to drop major cash on some new oil pastels, but instead settled for some inexpensive but adorable wallet-sized animal figurines (a lamb for me and a dinosaur for the boyfriend - so cute!) I haven't seen a small business that sells art supplies outside of my beloved Blick's in Cambridge, MA, so it was cool to visit Manny's in New Paltz and not only support a local business, but support the arts as well. I CAN order it from Rhinebeck Art Supply in New Paltz and I do but Catskill is closer and I'd gladly get it from there when I purchase other items. I used to live in NYC and shopped at New York Central Art Supply and it was a pleasure and a great place. For an art supply store not to be able to order certain items is inexcusable. If you need it and it exists they should be able to order it. Bad business practice. If you are reading this try the stuff it's amazing. New Paltz will have it in the store in a couple of weeks. I loved strolling down the aisles to see what would inspire me even though I truly wanted to make a beeline directly to the pens, pens, pens. I took a deep inhale and reminded myself that there was no rush which was just enough of a pep talk needed for me to explore what else Jerry's had to offer. I picked up a couple of calendars that were the perfect balance of art yet practical. The colors were so vibrant and will definitely make the perfect gifts, if I am even able to part with them. Mini pages of dabbled watercolors lent an air of inspiration with their translucent ombré tones. Dried flowers and twigs, bright warm-shades of fall leaves brought nature into the store and made prime still life subject matter. You could tell the owners put a lot of creative energy and passion into this space. Though I didn't have much direct interaction with the staff, I overheard them helping other customers and providing recommendations. Definitely recommend stopping by in Cold Spring.
