Hit "format disc" on my extended storage drive instead of my memory card. Oops. Brian ran 2…read moredifferent scans and put them on a drive I provided. Most all file root systems are intact. Pretty much saved almost everything, with slightly different results on both scans. Now I'll just run Duplicate File Finder Pro and delete the dupes...and consolidate. I needed someone to help troubleshoot my Nest installation; it had suddenly stopped working (and…read morethe previous installers didn't seem competent to fix it). I found Alex on the Next certified installer site (and see that he's still listed). Unfortunately, although I think Alex can probably handle the most basic Nest installation, I wouldn't recommend him. The previous installers had not used standard wiring colors and this seemed to throw Alex off quite a bit; he commented on it several times. Then, although he did use a voltage meter to test the wiring, he also started just randomly touching different wires together. When he got to the common wire, I witnessed the system make a loud electrical popping sound. There was no voltage detected on the common wire after that. He eventually gave up and said I should have the original installers fix it. I worry a bit that he shorted out the delicate electrical components on the furnace, resulting in a $600+ repair cost to me. And I don't think he should be a certified Nest installer. Despite shorting out my system and not fixing the original problem, he charged me $32.

I learned about e-Home Automation from the Nest website. I initially had Alex out to install a…read moreNest thermostat. I asked him if he could arrive early and he offered to show up at 7:30am! Before he attempted to install the Nest he warned me about potential issues. I asked him to go ahead and sure enough, the wiring that powered my original thermostat was insufficient to power the Nest. Keep this in mind homeowners! I appreciated that Alex didn't try to charge me a fee for attempting to install the Nest and made a mental note to call on him if I needed help with anything else. A couple week's later I had an electrician install CAT6 cabling between my upstairs and downstairs. It never occurred to me that electricians typically do not terminate cables. I called up Alex and he said that he would terminate the cable for me. Not only did he terminate the cable but with extra time remaining he consulted me on a way to streamline my home network to improve my wifi signal strength. For anyone who has a "connected home" with a number of IoT gear, Alex is a great resource to get you up and running!
