Spicy Tofu Bites - I don't recommend
Jane A.

TERRIBLE SERVICE!!! Can't expect much from a food truck. They were posted at the TruckStop location in FiDi. It's later in the afternoon, the lunch crowd is long gone. I ordered a SIMPLE SIDE (spice tofu bites) and it really took me 10 minutes to get PLUS they were pumping out other people's orders of full meals that ordered AFTER ME. That really bothered me. 1) *see picture* Tofu Bites. Wasn't worth the $5.50, really worth $2. Taste, the tofu is mushy and the hot sauce is basically siracha. 2) What took so long to prepare it? I was #27, they served #28, #29, and #30 all who ordered full meals and ordered after me 3) what kind of fusion is this? korean, vietnamese, chinese.... with none of the above nationalities in the truck 4) service was slow Hate me for my review, it is what it is. Sorry. Until the next review....

Curry Chicken

Another truck I tried at the San Mateo Night Market. I didn't have much in the way of expectations for this truck as I had only heard of the name and not of what they serve so with that in mind my husband and I went with our 'safe' option of ordering Curried Chicken (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/8OjAOE0ygNiOiGn1H71oaw?select=vhpcljx4UyKVg12gd_DkgA#oj0r0PZi6C4eaoSdN6oZkw) $9. Portion size was decent and I liked the fact that it came with a serving of salad too. The shredded Chicken was somewhat of a surprise to me, mainly because I'm used to having curry with big chunks of Chicken but I really enjoyed the different texture and it made it a lot easier to eat too which at a food truck event is a big plus. Sauce was tasty, not too spicy but the rice was a bit sticky. 3.5 rounded up to a 4.

stuffed bulgogi roll

I was in the mood to try a different food truck at Truck Stop on 1st & Mission, so I gave the comic-book themed truck a try. Hiyaa serves up their take on Asian fusion in somewhat of a Chipotle format menu, in that you... 1. Choose a protein: Bulkogi, Spicy Pork, Lemon Grass Chicken, Curry Chicken, or a Vegetarian option. 2. Choose the form: Sandwich, Salad, Rice Bowl, or with Fries All cost ~$8-10. I had the Bulkogi in a Roll. It was quite tasty, but there is room for a little improvement. The shredded pickled carrots and cucumber slices were nice and spicy, but were topped off a little haphazardly and didn't sit too nicely in the sandwich. The romaine lettuce was unecessary. Also, the baguette was rather chewy. The marinated bulgogi beef tasted okay, but it was a little tough, or maybe it just seemed that way because of the texture of the bread. On the plus side, it was a large sandwich, so it was pretty filling. Maybe I'll try it again another time. I'm interested in the rice options. Hot marinated beef over steaming rice sounds good.

Decent food truck to consider for lunch but Hiyaaa! follows the predictable modular menu of meat option in a rice bowl, salad, or sandwich form factor. The meat options in the case of Hiyaaa! are a combination of Vietnamese, Korean, and Chinese. I had a fried chicken rice bowl and it was decent. I liked the textured of the fried chicken but thought the meat was a little dry and under seasoned. But all up when combined with the sauce and the salad, it was a perfectly fine lunch albeit slightly unmemorable. I've heard the Bulgogi beef is pretty decent though. In the vast SF food truck scene, Hiyaaa! isn't a standout but does a decent job at delivering food that carries well as you chow down on the go.

Lemongrass chicken

I ordered the lemongrass chicken in a salad. It's okay. The chicken was really hard to chew and pretty dry even though it was cubed and smothered in sauce. The salad was normal with a few pickled veggies to give it some flavor. On my last visit, I had the curry chicken, and it, too was dry (while drenched in curry). I like to give my restaurants multiple visits before making a review. So sad. The name and truck look really cool, but just could not perform :(

Sampler of beef mini roll, curry chicken over white rice, and sweet bulkogi salad with a hint of spice.

Tried the sampler combo at Off The Grid. The beef bun was good, especially die to some type of spicy mayo they include. The curry chicken was dry and very boring. Didn't help that it was served over cold rice. The salad was good but the meat on top was dripping with oil. All in all, I'd go with the beef sandwich.

Spicy Fried Chicken over Fries

A Chiptole-esqe take on Asian cuisine with your choice of protein (bulkogi, spicy pork, lemongrass chicken, tofu) over your choice of non-protein (sandwich, rice, salad, fries). Tons of flavor packed into each protein option which helps a little go a long way (...though their portions are not little, actually quite reasonable). Spicy Fried Chicken over Fries: If you're gonna go unhealthy, then go all the way! Fried chicken on top of fried potatoes; I felt the diabetus creeping in as I ate this. But so tasty. The chicken chunks are super crunchy, like I left a few pieces at my desk and came back after 2 hours of meetings and they were still crispy. The sauce is like a fancy General Tso's, which is spicier and tastier than Panda Express. The fries catch a nice coating of glaze that drips below eliminating the need for ketchup.

Beef bulkogi with japchae
Meghan R.

I'm grateful that Hiyaaa! came to my workplace because we don't have many options for food around, however I was a bit disappointed with the quality of my meal. I had the beef bulkogi over japchae noodles, which was mediocre at best. At $14, I felt that it was overpriced and the quality of the beef was lacking. The meat was also a bit chewy and greasy. The japchae was ok. I appreciate that you can customize your order (choose a protein, choose a side) and I may give them another try if they come to my neck of the woods again.

Bulkogi Sandwich. "Stuffed" for $9.

I was pretty enthusiastic to see Hiyaaa! finally open for business and around my area in SSF. I only had one thing on my mind to try and that was their Bulkogi sandwich which according to their menu contained Beef marinated in korean seasoning, do chua (pickled daikon and carrots), romaine lettuce, mayo, secret sweet and spicy sauce. It costs $7 for regular and $9 if you want it stuffed with double meat. I opted for double meat since I was super hungry for lunch. The sandwich was pretty heavy when I got it so that was a good sign and it was definitely very meaty (http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=F_5_UNX-wrAFCXuAkBZRDw&select=vhpcljx4UyKVg12gd_DkgA). And the Bulkogi was tasty, plus the Sweet and Spicy Sauce gave it some really good flavor! I'm a little on the fence with their pricing, but I'd say that the double meat option is a little bit of a splurge. You'll definitely get your money's worth with the amount of meat they put when you go for the "Stuffed" option. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. There aren't too many Bulkogi sandwich places around my area that I can think of other than Seoul On Wheels and Rhea's Deli, but they're both in the city and not in the peninsula, so I applaud them for being peninsula-based. I'll be trying them again soon to try their pork and chicken options.

This cost $5 for about 10 pieces. Total ripoff.

Worst decision of the night! I got some tofu bites and there were about 10 little pieces for $5.50 - seriously?!? The photo is a small container box, and it was barely full. What a waste of money. I went to the Koja truck later for a huge portion of food and much better tasting. Hiyaa blows.

Had my awesome Hiyaaa! experience at the MVBL Feast in Saratoga a couple of weeks ago and can't wait for them to come back! Had the Spicy Pork Banh Mi - DELICIOUS! The pork was so tender, flavorful and had just the right amount of spiciness. They put lots and lots of meat and lots of pickled veggies in their sandwiches, just how I like it! In fact, my sandwich was so packed with goodies I could barely get my mouth around it.. You definitely get your money's worth with this food truck!

They came to SFSU campus and I was curious about them so I decided to give it a try. i got the little combo thing so it was a bit of everything. The curry was completely BLEH. It literally looked like mushy poo when I saw it, and I'm not over exaggerating. The rice under that was completely soggy and mush. i didn't think that anyone can mess up on rice. The chicken over the salad was okay, but nothing special. I did like the little mini sandwich with the bulgogi though. I might've left happier if i had just left with a single sandwich. for $9 for this pile of mess, no thanks. Never coming back to this food truck ever again.

bulkogi sandwich
Cat H.

Food trucks come around my workplace fairly often now so it's nice to be able to have some options when it comes to lunch. When Hiyaaa! was parked right outside my office, I decided to give it a try. I ordered the bulgogi sandwich, which was pretty tasty. It was basically a banh mi but with marinated korean style beef. I have to admit, I enjoyed the combination of the meat and veggies since the meat was flavorful and not too dry. Wait time was minimal too, which is much appreciated when you're ravenous. A solid contender for lunch if you're looking for something tasty and fast.

Dominic’s Food Truck

Dominic's is my favorite food truck in the entire bay area…read more I've had food at almost all the food trucks between SF and the peninsula, and some from the south bay. It's a hidden gem for sure, and as you can tell from my photos, it's pretty much my #1 choice whenever I see them at a food truck gathering. It's a good and bad thing that they're not well known (good because there is no line or very fast wait, bad because they definitely deserve everyone's business). I've gone to them so much that they recognize me, since I tend to follow them wherever they go, even if it's at a random school fair, haha. Lately, I haven't been eating out but I do miss them. Low key they serve the best lobster rolls in the bay, with the best price. They know how to butter and grill the fluffy fresh bread so well, and they always have the perfect drawn butter ready. It's so great with their addictive skinny fries - even better if they're garlic fries. Their garlic is very freshly minced, and they bathe you in that garlic. They only do the lobster rolls once in a while, though. They always have a rotating special menu that I like to try, but they also have a solid standard menu. On their standard menu, I love their grilled fresh crab and shrimp sandwich, which is a nice substitute for lobster; it's also buttery, creamy, grilled perfectly, and filled with fresh sweet seafood. Just writing about their food makes me salivate. They've missed a couple of times with me - mostly on their Asian items, fried appetizers, and desserts. But if they're doing meat, seafood, sandwiches, or pasta (basically American or Italian), I'm all in there. Their lobster ravioli is way better than Costco or Trader Joe's, and probably on par with some upscale restaurants out here. You can even request slight modifications to your food and they'll get it done. They also have a regular catering business and offer pick up orders (usually with a 4 person minimum) for holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. While I enjoy my no wait time at Dominic's, I'll spread the word because I just have a good day any time I get to enjoy their food.

Most of the crowd was centered near the front of the park where the band was playing, but I decided to wander all the way to the end. That's where I found Dominic's, a sleek all-black food truck that immediately stood out. Their menu listed steak nachos, but I asked if they could make steak asada fries instead -- and without hesitation, they said yes. That alone told me a lot about their hospitality and flexibility. And let me tell you, those fries were absolutely delicious: juicy, tender steak packed with flavor, layered perfectly over the fries. To top it off, the guys surprised me with complimentary mini cannolis, which made the whole experience even sweeter. While most people stayed near the busier area up front, I encourage anyone visiting these events to walk the entire park and check out all the trucks -- you never know where the hidden gems are waiting. Dominic's is one of them. Yes, prices lean a little higher, but the quality, flavors, and service make it more than worth it. Thank you, Dominic's, for a fantastic meal and a happy tummy! Highly recommend.

My husband and I were at Orange Park and wanted to give this truck a try and we were really glad that we did! The funny thing is, I told him I wasn't that hungry and would order a super burrito and eat half now and save the other half for later. So, I ordered a steak super burrito with everything in it, while my husband ordered birria tacos, which comes with the consomé. Both of our orders also came with tortilla chips and sauce, which I thought was pretty cool! The burrito came out to be $12.50, the birria tacos were $15 and you get 3. We also go a pineapple juice as well. The super burrito was so good that even though I said I wasn't that hungry, I ended up eating the whole thing!! I did share with my husband though! The guacamole and sour cream really elevated the burrito! There was a good amount of meat, rice, beans and flavor in the burrito! I couldn't stop eating it. In the past at other places, I have had super burritos that were really dry and had too many beans and rice. This burrito was well balanced! The birria tacos, omg SO SO GOOD! The meat is so tender, the flavor is great! You can tell that the owner put a lot of love into the cooking! The taco shell was crispy, the onions and cilantro were fresh! I love the cheese on the tacos! I'm salivating just thinking about them! Haha. These are a must try! My husband and I love the birria tacos!! I also want to mention that the owner Luis is super nice. He asked us what kind of sauce we wanted and how many. His business deserves more recognition! I really like the vibe that Luis gives off. He's such a friendly guy! If you're ever in the area, you have to try his food! It's so good! Everything comes out hot and he's pretty quick with the orders too. When my husband and I went, it was just him working alone, so if it gets busy there, please be patient with him. It's really worth the wait!!

SSF has always had great taco options, but Taqueria El Pollo might be the best in town, or dare I say the peninsula? The options are on point, so whether you're a meat, fish, chicken, or veggie eater, they have an option for you. The tacos are made fresh to order and are so well flavored. They are also packed full and paired with a side of hot or mild (both) salsas and chips. I will definitely be returning for another Sunday outing to visit them.
