Outstanding! Delightful flavorful breakfast in a very unassuming cozy building. Very close to center of town. Get there early for all their yummy breads.

Grilled cheese

On a road trip through Oregon, we were pleasantly surprised by this gem! We came around 11:45am on a Thursday and the place was not crowded at all. They have a TON of outdoor seating, but plenty of places inside as well. I got the grilled cheese with the fried egg. So good! It came with a side salad almost and I was very grateful for that. It's hard to get in veggies while traveling. I also got an iced lavender honey latte and an oatmeal cookie and neither of those disappointed either. Love all the LADIES that I saw working in this space and the environmentally friendly choices they're making. #girlpower

The cappuccino was excellent

One of the many coffee shops in Ashland - we stopped by for a pick-me-up this morning while walking around town. There is a lot of outdoor seating and we made ourselves comfortable, then ordered snacks and drinks. The cream-filled powdered donut was a hit, the chocolate chip cookie was tasty but a bit dry. The chai was bland, so we shared the excellent cappuccino instead. Will try other coffee shops rest of the week - there are certainly many to choose from.

Really loved Hither. The food was fresh and baked goods were delicious. Staff was friendly and food came fast. The drinks were also great. My opinion is that the winners are the bakes goods so anything you order with a fresh bakery item will win you over. Left not feeling too heavy and the perfect amount of satisfied- outdoor seating is a bonus in this summer sun. Would come again absolutely for a quick bite

Fried chicken sandwhich
Robert E.

This place was recommended to us by the salon across the street. They said it has a coffee house vibe but really great food--a little more expensive but worth it. And they were right. We could hang out for a few hours and work then grab some food. I had the fried chicken sandwhich. It is crispy, moist, and hot with a sweet and spicy sauce. Also, instead of lettuce, it has a hardy green... I think it was chard. The one downfall is that it was super messy to eat, and the bread fell apart. It became a fork and knife sandwhich--oh well. The fries are also really good. If the price isn't an issue, this is a go-to staple in ashland.

Drinking some superb drip coffee here, al fresco.

When you see Wendy has returned twice to the same place within a few days' span, you know this place has impressed. The first day started with indulging in a fancy brunch meal, a rarity in my life these days. But in Ashland, frankly you'd be a fool not to make time for breakfast. This town is a brekkie heaven. Our order was called The Monster Dish Combo... probably enough to serve 3. This includes a beautiful, light and fluffy Dutch Baby, with a delicate lemony flavor. This comes with a small carafe of maple syrup. The Dutch Baby was the star of the show. Wish they would offer it as a solo item. They did not at the time of our visit. But this was not all. Gently cooked, fluffy scrambled eggs and several slices of good Bacon (and normally sausage, but they were out) were somehow piled on the same plate. But wait! There were 3 nice sized chunks of fried chicken (breast) too, prepared with a delicate, flakey breading, lightly sweetened, spiced with a sprinkling of red pepper, but not spicy. Last but not least, they found room to adorn the plate with a light salad made from local greens including peppery arugula, with parmesan. Nice touch. This combo is not for the weak hearted. Bring a friend, and anticipate still having to bag some to go home, unless you have consciously saved up for the eating frenzy you will have to invoke. Great drip coffee with free refills. Puff brand from Portland. The bathroom is somewhere inside. Not sure where they hid it, because indoor is one tiny room with maybe 6 tables to accommodate 12 people, plus the counter for ordering, plus a full view of the fast paced activity in the kitchen. The remainder of the dining is outdoors, your choice of a brick patio, open deck, or a deck under the trees. It's pleasant, as long as the weather cooperates and the predictable smoke from summer forest fires don't ruin the air. In spite of its informal ambiance, the cloth napkins, real tableware (no plastic here) takes your experience up a notch, closer to "classy". Order at the counter, but your food will be delivered to your table. Navar served and checked on us frequently. Excellent service!By the way, there are happy chefs in that kitchen! Impressive. Our second visit, it was their grilled cheese tartine with fried egg, and herbed, fluffy egg on toast that won my heart. Throw in a side of their delicious a side of bacon, and some of those great, freshly baked cookies (oatmeal or chocolate chip!) and a piping hot mug of their hair-curling dark roast coffee. We have found nothing to complain about here. Their other baked goods look pretty tempting. We so enjoyed their good food, we tried to hit them up again, yep, a third time, only to pick the day they had an unexpected closure. Such sadness you cannot imagine!

Wild Mushroom Tartine
Marty T.

Shared a slice of cake with my friends at the table on a Saturday brunch on New Year's Morning. Wild mushroom tartine was great, I believe there were chanterelles and maybe oyster mushrooms in it, and I look forward to ordering fried chicken next time, a friend shared theirs and it was amazing.

Herbed Eggs, Biscuit Sandwich, Mocha. Cinnamon Roll in the belly and not in photo.
Susie R.

Sooo good. We'd be regulars if we lived here. I had the Herbed Eggs and it was ridiculously yummy. I took a bite of my husband's egg sandwich and that was very delicious, too. The mocha was tasty and served in the cutest handmade ceramic mug. The cinnamon roll was the best I've had. I want to try more. Yum! The employees were friendly. They definitely pay attention to the quality and details -handmade dishes, solid utensils, gorgeous wood tables. The interior is nice.

Eggnog Doughnut

My wife and I were traveling through Ashland and looking for Breakfast - we stumbled into Hither on a Sunday morning as the team was prepping Holiday bags. There's a small retail section as you walk in, kitchen to the right, and some seating to the left (as well as outside). The retail items were extremely well curated and high quality. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and offered menus. This place is more of a quick service restaurant feel (place order at counter, they bring food and bus) but you can tell the staff are professionals. The kitchen looked great and the menu was well stocked. Ordered the breakfast sandwich and herbed eggs for the meal. The staff were just finishing eggnog brioche doughnuts which we added for a dessert. The quality and service was great - would recommend to foodies traveling through the area for great food in a relaxed ambiance.

Fried chicken bowl

Absolutely phenomenal food I didn't even know I liked fried chicken and theirs is like the best thing I have ever put in my mouth. And their greens are so good and the eggs are always cooked perfect and the coffee is just on point. Oh and the elderflower mimosa I got today too was exquisite I also really appreciate the beauty of the ceramic plates and bowls they serve on too. I only like to eat out if I'm eating good quality intentional food and I am so grateful for Hither.

Michaela R.

Hither never disappoints! Every time my foodie friend from Portland comes to town, the only MUST GO place is Hither. We both got the herbed eggs- chef's kiss! The service is kind, and the place is so cute! If we adventured out to other food options, I am confident they would also be delicious, but we can't venture out from the delicious herbed eggs on focaccia. The caramel mocha latte with oatmilk was also divine. The caramel had rosemary in it, which might have balanced out the sweetness, but it was not overwhelming at all. As always, we will be back!

Last year we celebrated our same event at Belle Fiore in a private dining room that was perfect for our event. This year we were not in a private dining room. We were open to a large room where the general public sits with very loud music. Make no mistake, the music was Broadway Phil & the Shouters so it was GREAT -- but not appropriate for an elegant evening. Our server was wonderful. She was very attentive and made certain she took gracious care of everyone's needs. Her excellent service kept me from giving a lower rating. What contributed to a 2 star rating for this event was the fact that our bill was probably somewhere between $600 and $700, yet restaurant management declined to allow us to pay as couples or individuals with credit cards. Instead, management required all of us to bring cash -- even though we had no idea how much to bring to pay for our dinners and wine -- and for our president to have to collect the cash from everyone and count it several times to ensure that it was correct. In my opinion, collecting payment for a dinner is done by staff. This was insulting. As a member of the planning committee, I will not recommend that we hold future elegant evenings at Belle Fiore -- if that continues to be a requirement. It is utterly déclassé. There are other restaurants we can give our business to that understand excellent service. Clearly, management does not.

Bar Juillet: Where Perfect Cocktails Meet Perfect Fried Chicken…read more Bar Juillet has quickly become one of our absolute favorite go-to spots in Ashland and Southern Oregon. It all starts with the best fried chicken you'll find anywhere in the region. Hands down. This restaurant and cocktail bar delivers on every front. The cocktails are crafted with real skill and balance, and their wine list is outstanding a thoughtful mix of local favorites and world-renowned producers that shows just how seriously they take their program. I've eaten here multiple times, and one thing you can always count on is consistency. The service is warm and attentive, the food is always executed beautifully, and the atmosphere makes it easy to settle in and enjoy the night. They do get busy on weekends, so reservations are smart, but even if you end up waiting, it's absolutely worth it. And if you can grab a seat at the bar, do it. The bartenders here make it an experience all on its own. Reliable, delicious, and truly one of Ashland's standout spots. Bar Juillet never disappoints.

As a chef at two James Beard-winning restaurants, a server, owner, and consultant, I have dedicated my life to the food industry and the people within it. I'm from Ashland, and I was so happy when places like this started showing up in my hometown. Good food and atmosphere can be so hard to find. Coming home to Ashland can be a true oasis for my family. My wife and I have made it our life's mission to make our daughter feel equal and included. Our daughter was born with a rare condition called AMC and does not have normal function in any of her limbs. She currently spends 3-4 days a week in physical therapy to continue building strength so her body and organs can function properly. We were visiting family at the park and suggested stopping in for a beverage and snacks to escape the heat after a long day. We typically plan everything ahead to ensure wherever we go can accommodate my daughter's wheelchair and needs. When we arrived, we thought, "Wow, perfect, she can wheel right in and up to one of the many open tables." Once we were "greeted" by the host, I realized we were not who she wanted to deal with. Three kids, three adults, a stroller, and a wheelchair. She looked like she wanted nothing to do with us, like we were dirt on her shoe. "No reservation," she said. I replied, "Yeah, so sorry, we figured since it was a Monday night right when you opened, and there were only two two-tops seated, we could probably find somewhere to sit." I reassured her we would not stay long enough to impact reservations at the larger front tables, which usually have reserved markers on them but did not at the time. We could all feel that she didn't want to seat us, and we left despite me practically begging to make something work for us, because I know she could have if she wanted to. Being from the industry, I understand what kids can do to an atmosphere, and I know a lot of restaurant workers don't enjoy dealing with other people's children. But when we went outside and my daughter cried and said, "They didn't want me there" So I loaded my daughter's wheelchair back into the car so I could carry her up the stairs at Brickroom, where one employee was working the entire place and took amazing care of us, I might add. We resorted to a booster seat for my daughter since she couldn't use her wheelchair there. She ended up falling out of the seat and slamming onto the hardwood floor. She cried and was embarrassed. The young man tending bar while also waiting every table rushed over with a bag of ice to comfort her. It was honestly touching how kind he was. When we left Brickroom, we had spent more time there than we originally intended to spend at Bar Juliet. As we walked back by Bar Juliet, we noticed the restaurant was still only about half full, and one of the large front tables had remained open the entire time from around 4:10 until 5:40 when we walked by again. I had to stop and ask the host why she couldn't have seated us considering that table never filled. Her only explanation was, "Our kitchen is slow getting food out." Such an incredibly weak excuse. I hope she understands she was wrong and that she made my daughter feel unwanted simply because accommodating us wasn't convenient for her. I have never left a review in my life, but I was so saddened and disgusted by this experience that I felt I had to.

They were a little warm for immediate drinking so maybe specify if you want your beverage less than normal hot for kids. The cocoa also had a bit of a cinnamon flavor to it. If you are staying in, you will get a ceramic mug, so if you want a paper cup let your barista know. The big win for me was the menu of gluten free pastries! They had regular glutinous things like burritos and quiche that looked tasty but the gluten free!!!! They partner with a bakery in town (sisters sans gluten) to have a variety of offerings. The service is good, we've been there with our family and with a large group, and they have always been very patient and friendly. Alchemy is in my top 3 favorite places for a dressy dinner when we are visiting Ashland. The only slightly negative thing I have to say is that we were there celebrating a birthday once and at the end of the meal our server brought out a candle on a small, flat ceramic dish. The birthday girl's comment was, "You just spent $300 on dinner and all they brought me for my birthday was a candle?" It seemed a little chintzy since most places will give you an actual dessert, not just a candle, but at least they brought a candle. Other than that tiny little thing, we still love to eat here and will be back when visiting in the future.

The latter changes seasonally--in our case it was a dashi broth with a variety of local mushrooms and vegetables. Both dishes were good, with my steak cooked perfectly and the mashed potatoes amazingly creamy without tasting too buttery; the dashi broth was delicious as well. We also split the steak tartare, the house bread, and the chips & dip (seasonal special) as appetizers. With the exception of the chips & dip, the appetizers were good but nothing outstanding. The chips & dip, however, were REALLY GOOD! I did not know you could elevate potato chips like that, but their house-made chips are delicious and I would highly recommend trying them. Both my fiancé and I were not a huge fan of the sauce (just a little too creamy, it's really smooth though so if you like creamy sauces you'll probably enjoy it!), but just eating the plain chips was amazing. They even brought us a second serving of chips for free since we hadn't used all of the dip! We also ordered a pear tart for dessert which I would also recommend getting! Delicious crust and good pear flavor.
