    Gomez Brothers Concrete

    Gomez Brothers Concrete

We contracted with Gomez Brothers Concrete for an integrally colored stamped concrete driveway…read more Things seemed fine, if really messy, at first. The first load of cement was insufficient to pour both curbs, so only one was done. The next day, the cement was a completely different color. When brought to Mario's attention when the first wheelbarrow was dumped, he reassured us it would dry to the same color. It didn't. While the colors of the stamped concrete are not what we chose, we can live with it. The two curbs alongside our driveway are completely different colors. Again, we were reassured that it would look different when it set up, and that he would stain the curbs to blend better. The colors are not the problem, though. We can live with the esthetic issue. However, the driveway was not properly pitched to the street for drainage, and there are multiple large low spots where water collects and never drains. Also, instead of draining to the street, the water actually slowly runs the opposite way toward the house. We believe he didn't plan the driveway pitch properly, or pour sufficient concrete to eliminate the low spots before stamping. When they came to clean up the powder release agent it became very obvious that the driveway wasn't properly pitched. We have spent 5 days trying to get Gomez Brothers to back up their work. After consulting with several experts, the consensus is that the driveway was doomed from the beginning due to poor planning, insufficient pitch, and the sunken spots that have exacerbated the drainage issues, and that the only solution is to tear the driveway out and re-pour it. We live in Chicago. We know that in rainy weather the driveway will be a lake, and that in winter those huge puddles will freeze and be dangerous for us and everyone who walks up to our house. (Mailman, delivery people, family, friends) Someone will end up getting hurt, and the standing water and ice will damage the concrete quickly. Repeated attempts to get Mario to replace the shoddy work have gotten us nowhere. The "solution" he offered is to drill multiple holes in the curb to have the water drain onto our next door neighbors walkway. That is ridiculous. We cannot redirect our excess water to the neighbor's property, and the holes he drilled without permission are above the water line of the ponding on our side, and below the soil line on the other, so they won't work anyway. Mario's position is that we should PAY AGAIN to have a 6 day old driveway torn out and re-done correctly. These are their mistakes. We had no control over the installation, but relied on their expertise to do the job properly. They didn't. And to make matters worse, the driveway looks beautiful. But we didn't contract for a $16,000 koi pond, we contracted for a proper driveway. I'd love an easy solution. Sadly, the only way to fix this is a complete tear out of the slab to correct the pitch and eliminate the sunken portions, and Gomez Brothers is refusing to stand behind their work. Now we will have to pay someone else to remove all this concrete, and pay someone to install another driveway properly.

I contacted Mario and he said he would come take a look. He never showed and now there are multiple cracks in the concrete that's 2 years old. I'm very disappointed in his response to a poor quality job
