The best breakfast in Michigan. It starts with fresh coffee. Piping hot and strong. If your appetite is geared to classic breakfast choices, you're covered. Eggs, perfectly cooked, biscuits and gravy, sausage, sandwiches, all hand made fresh. Specials from around the world change everyday if you are a more adventurous diner. On weekends they serve artisan pizza, not gas station greasy, as good as Chicago or Detroit, and other specials from their outdoor smoker. The atmosphere is green, peaceful and country, surrounded by a farm. The service is personal and not rushed. It has a drive through but its charm is meant to be absorbed at a Croton pace. Sit down, watch the hummingbirds, hear the donkeys bray in the distance. Enjoy great food, maybe even listen to some acoustic live music. There is only one of these in the world. Cash only! There is an ATM inside if needed. WOW! What an interesting stop. The parking lot is small but there is signage for extra parking along the side of the property if needed. The restaurant was ALL decked out for Halloween! From the time you pull into the parking lot to when you enter. Marie welcomed us kindly, gave us menus, and we found our own seats. There is seating both inside and outside. We chose a booth outside and enjoyed the scenery with all the flowers are in bloom. The tables and chairs do not match and there are vases with flowers on the table. I ordered the Thai Tea and could not be happier. When Marie brought it out she waited to stir it together so I could watch the magic. It had a pumpkin taste with a cinnamon flare is the best way to describe it. I also ordered the special "onion soup" and a blueberry lemon muffin. My husband had the club. Very strange that bacon was not on the menu. I asked and was told having bacon is a hit or miss if available. They offer sausage and/or ham products so having a club without bacon was definitely different. Can't say enough good things about this cool little hole-in-the-wall cafe and coffee shop! The place is clean, eclectic, has both indoor and outdoor seating, and even has some cute little animals in back to check out. Service is friendly and the food is really good. (zucchini pancakes were outstanding! bagel and coffee were good) If you are in the area you must check it out! The only thing that would make this place better is a liquor license. :) read more

Finally had the opportunity to try this place for breakfast. I opted for the special of ham and cheese omelet with croissant crust and fresh fruit $9.95. The waitress recommended trying the special, because one could always order off the menu. Made sense to me. It was really good. The fresh fruit was a slice of orange, fresh pineapple and blueberries. Great spot near the croton hardy dam area.... currently not doing dine in, they post take out for M/W/F and some saturdays. they have a take out/drive up window to help with exposure. CASH/CHECK only - no credit cards. Mom & I got their chicken tiki marsala for take out, mom got GLUTEN FREE, I got regular. delicious! the prior weekend, we got the wood fired pizzas - SO YUM. The sweetest little restaurant/cafe. We're out of town folk and it's always great to find local establishments! We were hoping to make it to Friday dinner but weren't able to. Chef Tracy is wonderful. I highly recommend the pizzas and barbecue, and for breakfast, their eggs Benedict and their French toast are incredible. Everything is fresh, and is as organic as she can source. They even smoke their own hams. We LOVE HTRJ. Love the BBQ on Friday nights in the summer. Love the pizzas. Love the ambience. We have been eating there for 10+ years. Our kids grew up feeding ponies, eating French toast, and sitting on the patio and swings. It is one of our very favorite places tucked away in Croton. read more

The ambience and service is outstanding. The food is ok, I had bacon eggs and hash browns and toast. The bacon was thin thin transparent, the hash browns were frozen prepared. The toast was ok. The whole plate had no color. My hubby went to order omelet asked for egg whites they said they could not do that being the omelet is pre made. read more

Being the coffee-guzzling city boy I am, I was thoroughly impressed by this little coffee shop in the middle of nowhere. The layout is much more of a diner, but don't fear because their coffee competes with the high-end, expensive coffee shops for much less. I enjoyed this place very much and if it were closer to me, I would definitely be back for more! Absolutely nothing I can complain about. Coffee lovers will find their tastes met by a good selection of coffee drinks Chuck is a friendly lanky fellow who is the cafe mascot always sitting at the bar; make sure you say hi to Chuck and ask him any questions you have about the area. There are atm's nearby for this cash only cafe. The bacon and hash browns are prepackaged so don't expect much there. Hit the Road Joe is easy to miss and may not look overly fancy or trendy from the outside, but once you step inside and choose from their great menu, you will discover uncharted territory. Delicious food, great portion sizes and wonderful coffee's paired with the beautiful scenery, cool trinkets and crafts around the store make for an all around wonderful dining experience.
