We've driven by here a number of times but never stopped inside until this past Father's Day. What an absolute treat. Delicious Latin food that is flavorful but doesn't blow you away with spiciness, unless you want it that is. Louisa took great care of us and got us started with excellent chips and salsa and margaritas the size of small fish bowels. Great fajitas tacos and quesadillas too - and no complaints from the kids. Even the desserts were really good. We're in the area every weekend and this will definitely be our go-to spot. Also really good for those with Celiac or gluten allergies. read more

Hispanic popped up on places I should try and I am glad it did. I was pleased to see that this restaurant was practicing social distance while also providing a great customer service. The waitress was very patient with me as I looked through the menu and even provided a few recommendations. I ended up ordering the tacos and the seafood soup and both were amazing. I'm not quite sure by the picture if you can really get a good look at how bug that soup bowl was but let's just say the tacos were put in a to-go box as there was no way I could finish all the food. The restaurant offers daily drink and food specials. There is indoor dining and they are also allowing space in between tables. I would drive a good 30 min for this restaurant which has been rare in my recent dining experiences so I'm going to go out on a limb and say the soup was one of the best dishes I've had in 2021. When you walk into a place and 99% of the patrons are Hispanic, you know you are in the right place for true Latin flavor! Salsa is always the indicator of how good the food is going to be... holy yes please! So much flavor! I ordered one each of the pupusas, cheese, bean, and pork with corn flour served with pickled veggies... Um si, si, si! These were so amazing! I couldn't stop eating them, but finally had to tap out! At $7 for the plate, you cannot get a better deal! The enchiladas de mole were on point! The spicy sauce was perfect! If you are feeling a bit more adventurous, you can try their El Salvadoran soup, which features, heart and tripe. The menu is small, but that's what makes each dish that much better! Fresh ingredients and fabulous food! This is definitely a place to check out, go out of your way, drive 100 miles, just get there as fast as possible! Not sure what made us go in this time but all I can say is we should have gone in 3 years ago so we could have been enjoying the food all this time!! Best customer service I've ever received at a restaurant, period. The owner is accommodating and cordial. The chefs come out to the tables and introduce themselves. They all go the extra mile and then some. The sopa de res is delicious. I come every week for a bowl. The chicken milanese (while I thought it was a traditional italian dish) is the best I've ever had. Prices are fair and a great family atmosphere. We decided to try Hispa for the first time on a Monday night after we both felt too tired to cook. We chose this place because it was close by honestly, but we were surprised. Place looks clean very comfortable. The menu for both food and margaritas was delightful. Its a seat yourself restaurant but did not take long to get a waitress to present us with a menu for food ordering and she was friendly. This place looks like a little hole in the wall, but WOW!! First of all, the food was delicious! We were there for dinner and the serving amounts were just perfect. Spices in the fish tacos were incredible, the fried chicken crisp and juicy. The mashed potatoes were amazing. The wait staff was friendly and quick, and explained the menu items to a "T". After reading the great Yelp reviews I decided to try out this restaurant. I am sorry that I did. I ordered a pupusa and grilled calamari. Both were disgusting and disappointing. The pupusa was the worst pupusa that I have ever eaten. I took one bite and threw the rest away. It was inedible, dry, barely any filling and chalky. The grilled calamari was very chewy to the point of being stringy. I tried three different pieces and threw the rest away. A total waste of time, effort and money. I would not recommend. Great place to get some pupusas or the mariscada! Packed full of flavor and consistently tasty. I will say that the "lobster mariscada" was over-cooked compared to the "No lobster mariscada". I've been encouraging the staff here at this gem of a sleeper in Edgewater to open their own brick and mortar restaurant for at least a year now and just last month they finally opened their doors. Previously the 'restaurant' consisted of one table, and 4 bar style chairs in the back corner of the market. This was how the restaurant came to be and ironically the kitchen is still in the same location but they expanded to the suite next door and installed tables, televisions, a bar (no liquor license yet - not sure if that is even planned), and restrooms to complete a storefront for the restaurant. This is largely El-Salvadoran but oddly enough the menu includes items like Chicken Al-Fredo. I personally would never order something like this at an eatery such as this however it's noteable that there are non-latino dishes available including chicken nuggets and fries for the kids. I brought a party of 3 in last evening and our meal included chips and salsa when we were seated. The salsa was typical of these types of restaurants however I'm pretty sure this one had some mango in it - not hot at all but very nice and I'm sure the chips are made in house. My group ordered tacos de carne (2) ala carte. Hispa sells 'street tacos' consisting of a meat (chicken, beef, bean, or tongue only so far), corn tortillas (2 each), cilantro & onion, radishes, and green sauce picante. Don't ask for cheddar cheese etc here - they don't have it - this isn't Taco Bell... I had 2 appetizers; grilled calamari with pico de gallo and the fried yucca with chicharrone that included some sour 'slaw' on the side and a spicy habanero sauce. As they draw most of their produce from the market next door the yucca was very fresh and fabulous. The chicharrone and calamari were also perfectly prepared and pleasingly presented. My wife got the chicken fajitas and requested 'no picante' (not spicy). The fajitas come with rice, refried red beans, and house made guacamole along with some corn or flour tortillas. I also had a horchata to drink (look it up if you don't know) which came in a huge tall glass of the variety you might see at a german Oktoberfest. This was also delicous and works well to put out the habanero fire. I've been here many times prior to the opening of the storefront restaurant - every dish has been amazingly delicious, reasonably priced, authentic by my standards (cooked by actual latino ladies), and beautifully presented. This place beats the pants off of fakes like Plazuelas and La Fiesta which are Taco Bell with waiters. This is REAL El-Salvadoran cuisine. The market next door also has some of the most reasonable produce anywhere in the area. This business is a fine example of American capitalism at work. Oh and they DO speak English here which is a nice change - not many of these places do. So glad this little place opened in Edgewater as we were not going back to Plazuelas. Nice menu with a great selection and reasonable prices. Don't expect to find dishes like Chimichangas or nachos here. instead you can enjoy offerings like tacos, fajitas and papusas. Hispa just got their liquor license, so if you want to get special pricing ($4) on jumbo margaritas go soon. We went in for lunch so we ordered lighter than our usual dinner meal. The grilled calamari was good and had the tell tale sign of grill marks and grill flavor. The tomatillo salsa they serve with the chips was delicious - tangy and super fresh. For heat lovers, you may want to request some hot sauce as this is about as tame as you can get. Nevertheless we enjoyed it enough to get some to go. No jars here, as this is homemade so we got a nice sized portion for $2.99. We look forward to enjoying it during our football watching marathon this weekend. The chicken torta had the nice soft roll and arrived topped with tomato, avocado, sour cream, pureed red beans and mayo. The side of fries that it came with absorbed too much not so fresh oil so that was a disappointment cause who doesn't love a good crinkle fry? The sandwich was quite good though, with all the components blending together to give it a nice cohesive flavor profile. OMG where has this place been all my life! Central and south American food and its authentic!! I travel to Central America on a regular basis so I have an idea what authentic food tastes like and this restaurant has it down to a T! Came here at the recommendation of a friend and I'm so thankful he told me about it!! When you first pull up it's to the left of Hispa market, a little confusing as the door is small and there's no sign on the door only at the top of the building. Upon entering there are tables or booths or the bar to choose from and it's somewhat dimly lit but we were greeted right away. The reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 was because it was challenging to communicate with the waitress because she didn't speak any English so we had to point and use the broken Spanish we knew in combination with hand gestures to get the point across. We ordered the Queso with chorizo and the mariscada (seafood soup) with lobster and cream (both were optional). It was DELICIOUS! The menu says half lobster but it actually came with a full lobster in it, score! All the food came out piping hot which was a huge plus, I'm very picky about the temperature of my food and the fact that it HAS to be hot not just warm. happened upon this little place when my washing machine broke down and I had to launder my clothing at a Laundromat. It was next door so I decided to have lunch. Best decision ever! Kinda dark inside and I sat at the bar as there were really not any other patrons except a couple of latino men at the other end of the bar. Ordered something with chicken that came with rice, beans, fresh veggies. It was delicious and plentiful! I had a margarita with it - which it was good, I am just not a big drinker so not sure how it compares. There seem to be a lot of fish/seafood dishes, but I am allergic so I don't know if those are good or not. Don't expect a whole lot of "friendly" attentive service if you go. Do expect to eat a very good meal at a very decent price. I will be going back again and again! read more

INCREDIBLE!!! I started going to Hispa when it was a small kitchen in the back of the grocery store. It was great then & NOW!!! The carne asada is to die for. The pupusas are out of this world. The chef hails from what used to be the best Italian restaurant in this area & it shows. I got the pics of the weekend specials on FB & we were there. My wife got the seafood fettuccine which was amazing. All kinds of seafood in it. I got the seafood paella. I could not take a bite without having hunks of seafood. And I mean the good stuff. Both looked the same but tasted entirely different and in an excellent way. We almost needed a crane to handle the leftovers. Tortilla chips and a really great smoky salsa to start with. They now serve decent, and inexpensive, wine so you don't have to BYOB ($10 corkage). Had the tiramisu and tre leche cake for desserts. Both really good. The only disadvantages are that if you do take away the food comes out so hot and fresh it melts the styrofoam containers & the entrance is a bit ADA difficult. read more

I went here for lunch today with my in-laws. I won't be going back. We arrived around 1100 and other than a few guys at the bar, we were the only ones there. Service was poor from the outset as nobody indicated where we should sit and nobody offered us a high chair for our child. I had to go back to near the bathroom and get that myself. (Side note, the bathrooms are single occupant bathrooms, the men's room had no hand soap.) The music was loud and obnoxious throughout our meal as the likes of Eminem and Beyonce serenaded us. We ordered our food and noticed that a few tables of Spanish speaking guys had arrived after we'd ordered. They were all eating before we were. The waitress herself spoke broken English and was largely inattentive. I don't believe any drinks were refilled during our meal. She brought us what was requested and was pleasent enough, she just wasn't going to go out of her way either. The meal itself was just flat out bad. I ordered a pork dish that was listed as having a "tomato sauce". The sauce was a lot of diced tomatoes and a lot of juice / broth under the pork. The rice was the best part of the dish and some flavorless pureed blackbeans rounded out the meal. The pork chop was inedible. It was an overcooked mass of bone, fat and gristle. I found about three bites of real meat before quitting the attempt and settling for stealing fries off my wife's plates. Based off the other reviews here, my experience seems to be the anomaly, but we were very disappointed and know there are better options in the area. read more
