Had to try this after seeing the reviews. I'm a big fan of A&W and wanted to compare. Both are comparable, but A&W still has the edge, albeit a small edge. I ordered the combo which comes with their flagship cheeseburger, fries, and a frosty mug of their famous rootbeer. All was yummy. The bun was soft and fresh. The fries were good. The rootbeer was outstanding. I would say that while good, I like A&W's burgers are better. While Big H's burgers are good, I like A&W', Mooyah, and In-N-Out's better. The rootbeer? Almost the same as A&W's. Very good. Almost close to A&W's flavor. While Hire's rootbeer is excellent and has long been one of my favorite beverages, A&W's rootbeer is smoother and slightly more creamy. The fires were really good, but again, A&W's are better, at least in my opinion. A&W's fries have a nice slight crispness to them. Overall, as far as the food is concerned, very worthy. The service was good, this is a sit down restaurant and you will be waited on, so prepare to pay a tip. Speaking of prices, I was surprised as how expensive it was. The combo was $16, $17. I think about going to In-N-Out and getting a #1 Double Double with fries and a drink for $10 and some change. For that reason alone, I will not be returning for the food. However, I would be back for maybe their rootbeer floats. I saw a table with some and they look awesome. Tall mountain of soft serve ice cream in that frosty mug of rootbeer. Looks like it would be worth the $7 for it. The service was fairly fast. Getting the initial service was sort of questionable. Been there for about five minutes on my lunch break, no biggie. But I got concerned that a lady who sat down at a table next to mine sat down after me got the attention of a waitress and I hadn't ordered yet. So after that waitress took the lady's order, I called her over and she took my order. She explained that she was actually working the drive-through but she would be happy to take my order, which she did. The restaurant for the most part is one big room with lots of tables. There are some interesting things on the walls, but other than that kind of sterile, but not a big deal. While not packed, there were many customers in the room at this time, which was around 11:30. Probably about 30% full. So the menu and the prices are not an issue with many. As a matter of fact, there was a group of 6 next to me that seemed like business colleagues out for lunch. All the help was friendly and cheerful. As a matter of fact, the help that bussed the table asked if I wanted a cup of rootbeer for the road. How nice, what a nice touch. Check it out. I think you'll like it. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. I might do repeat business if it is convenient, the only option, the only one in its category, or on a whim, but would not be among the first thing to come to mind. This is the only decent hires in the valley. The food is tasty and reminds me of childhood. It came out accurately, hot, and without any issues. I would highly recommend getting the chili cheese dog with onions and fries. It is unlike any chili cheese dog I've had because it's large, comes with plenty of chili, and has the best hotdog bun I've ever had. The service was fast and friendly. She was incredibly efficient! Hires is a CLASSIC here in SLC, Utah!!! I particularly love the Midvale store because they have been so supportive of our family after our mom was in a car accident. Their food is delish. Grab a good burger (particularly the Big H or Junior H), order some fries, get a snickers shake or root beer freeze, and wash it down with a Dr. Pepper OR Cherry Diet Coke. Brought my teen kids in to Hires on a Friday night, and we each ordered the Big H onion ring combo. Our food arrived piping hot and fresh, within about fifteen minutes after we got our drinks, which was appreciated. The Big H is their signature 1/4 pound hamburger with a slice of American cheese melted over it, topped with their fry sauce, a nice slice or two of tomato, plus some crispy iceberg lettuce. The rolls are soft and pillowy. Always a favorite. :) Our portions were generous and the meal was really filling! I ended up bringing most of my onion rings home, whereas my kids finished theirs entirely. Hires' cherry limeade is my favorite. It's really quite refreshing, and does not disappoint. (club soda + limeade + cherry syrup + pellet ice + slice of lime and maraschino cherry) Yum! I like that the dining room is brightly lit, the tables are laid out in a way that can accommodate large groups, and it's ideal for families with small children. I wasn't a customer for the food, i'm sure it was great. The service on the other hand, the older lady up front was horrible. I work in food, and i completely understand the frustration with the door dashers who refuse to confirm the order and end up stealing the food. maybe instead of talking me saying "did you make her confirm? she looks like she's going to steal those pizzas" and then "you have no idea how many pizzas i've had to remake" shout out to the guy who brought it to me for sticking up for me. i would've been more than happy to show you that i confirmed the order, maybe if you're going to talk poorly about customers you should do it in the back away from where they can hear you. the tables, chairs, and floors were dirty. Maybe instead of running her mouth she could have been wiping down the tables and chairs and sweeping the floor. yes the food was nice and hot, but the employees attitudes are just as dirty as the eating space. read more

Craving a burger and shake, my husband and I made our way to Hires a few weeks back. It was a Saturday at dinnertime during this COVID pandemic, and pretty packed. They have customers placing/waiting on orders park in the spots attached to the building, and then request vehicles move to a space along the perimeter if you are staying to eat. We saw several parties hanging out in camp chairs: a cute idea, and kids in particular, seemed to be enjoying that, while still maintaining social distancing. Oh, and there is a large menu displayed outdoors on the back of the building, but we could not see it from where we were, so I'd peep one online prior to your arrival. The carhops were on fire: greeting us within less than a minute of parking, and incredibly patient with the older couple next to use who waited about ten seconds before yelling and flagging someone over with a "Oh, I just wasn't sure you saw us!" (insert eyeroll here). They were still sweet as pie! We waited 10-15 minutes for our order, which seemed reasonable. My lettuce wrapped Avocado H burger was tasty and satisfying. The meat is good quality, avocado fresh, and the fry sauce is a nice addition, without being glopped willy nilly and overwhelming the whole thing. I do wish they offered it over a salad (I asked - they don't - but if you want a good one Lucky 13'll do it for ya!), but I'm appreciative of the option to do away with a bun regardless. Especially as they are pretty meh squishy white bread style, which is not to my taste. With that said, my husband, who does not have a strong opinion about bread (except that carbs=good), had the bacon ranch burger, and liked it well enough. We shared an order of fries: fine and hot, but not on par with my crispiness standards. A variety of shakes, malts, and sundaes are available. He chose a (boring!) vanilla milkshake while I went with raspberry hot fudge. I figured they would drizzle hot fudge on top, but it was mixed in. It gave my shake a lil' note of something beyond raspberry, but it was negligible. The true berry flavor and bits of fruit were lovely, though. The thing with milkshakes is this: They are good, until they are not, which is about 5 minutes after receiving one. They melt too quickly, then it is just liquid ice cream, and I don't want that. This is no fault of Hires, they were just the impetus to reminding me of my feelings toward traditional shakes (now the thick shakes favored by most Utah eateries...that's a whole other thing!). I would probably skip dessert on a future visit, but if my sweet tooth is on, I'd opt for a sundae instead. Overall, the experience was decent to pretty good, but the price too high for what we received (over $30 for two, and not even full meals). It is the classic case of "could have made it at home better and for less." If you can't or don't want to make this yourself, however, it is a fair option. read more

I meant to write this review a few days ago when I was in for linner with my grand daughters. The best Veggie burger in town & I love the REAL fries not the fake filler fries like other places. They remind me as a kid we would make homemade french fries & fry sauce during sleepovers. The kiddos love the BIg H & Fries and we all love the root beer so yummy!! It has been so many years since I've visited Hires. I'm glad I went back. I feel like you get a good, high quality burger, and good service, for way less than Red Robin costs you. I love their fries, and their onion rings are good too. Plus, just look at the picture and check out that bacon--no thin microwaved strips here. Our server was great, and our food came out really fast. Initially, my diet root beer basically had no syrup in it; it was just brown carbonation. But they made it right really quickly. And their regular root beer is great, of course. Overall, a great visit and will gladly come back the next time I want a step above a fast food burger and a step below Red Robin (price wise). read more

We love the burgers & onion rings here . They are kinda pricey . We ordered the chili burger with French fries . This was a double patty open face on a bun with chili & cheese . The chili had a hearty flavor with chunks of tomatoes. It tasted homemade . It was really good & very filling . The fries were just ok . They weren't very hot but they were fresh . I don't like short fries & this order had a lot of them very few long fries . The fry sauce is amazing ! We also ordered the Big H burger . This was also not very hot. The burger is pretty thin. It has tomato & lettuce on it . Next time I would order a thicker burger . The bun is really soft & good . We got the onion rings they were amazing ! Was curious to try this burger place as they are always busy. It's pretty much regular fast food. The burger patties were dry, soy looking, bun smooshed but flavor was pretty similar to other fast food burgers. Fries were also pretty average I had DD deliver it so they were cold but threw them in the air fryer and brought them back to life a little bit. I've had my occasional visit to Hires over many years. Every time it hits the spot, though I only go when I'm ready for a burger and fries or a hot sandwich. Their classic (cheese)burger beats out many a burger for being fresh and delicious. Their Reuben is flavorful and excellent (try substituting turkey, too). And their root beer is some of the best around. I recently tried the lemon pepper chicken supreme - it was good, but I personally wanted a bit more lemon flavor. For me, this is a fantastic place to have as a traditional visit. And I have to say, last time I went the service was impressively fast. read more

Very polite workers. We go there so often that they recognize us by now. Could dine-in or can order from your car, which we prefer to do. Their food is always fresh. We get their grilled cheese and switch between their regular french fries and cheese fries, and both are great. Average portions on the grilled cheese and on the regular fries, but very large portions on the cheese fries should you choose to get a large rather than medium/small. In theory this place is terrific. Burgers, root beer, fries, and a little touch of nostalgia. That's in theory. And there are elements - small pieces - that can be gleaned from those characteristics. But in the end, it doesn't quite all come together. Firstly, it's not that they're trying too hard. Perhaps it's that they're not trying enough. One of the greatest compliments that I can make to Hires is that it is completely inoffensive. It's safe. Bring a group of people here and it's doubtful that anyone will turn their nose up. There's probably something for everyone, and there is most definitely something to be said for that. But if you're not moving forward, you're moving backwards. That's figuratively speaking--I would actually love if they moved forward or backward, timewise. Either embrace the nostalgia, or start taking some risks and move forward. The decor is so simple, but not fresh. It's a vanilla ice cream cone with nothing sprinkled on the top. Menu-wise, I have nothing bad to say. Especially about the burger. It doesn't shine as a beacon of beef patty in the valley, but it's totally acceptable. Probably just north of average. The rest of the menu highlights a little something for everyone with particular attention to the fast food before it was fast food movement. Stop in for lunch or dinner and there's a sure bet you'll find something on the menu for eveyone in your party. But without that added spark, you probably won't find anything that inspires you to jones for the joint. We love you, Hires Big H. Utah really loves you. Instead of going inside we opted for the carhop. They were pretty fast when they came to the car and took our order. Five minutes later our food was ready. The burger I ordered was really good. It had fresh avocado in it, the provolone cheese was melted just right. The onion rings were rather boring and over cooked. My wife ordered the teriyaki burger which had a piece of pineapple in it and a chicken breast. It was pretty good. She enjoyed her banana Oreo shake. I didn't try it. Our family has been enjoying Hires for decades! Service is more often than not very helpful and orders are accurate. Favorites include Roquefort Bacon H, Chef Salad and yummy garlic bread, onion rings and their cherry lime aid. My children love that Litzas is an offering and enjoy their mini pizzas and Mac & cheese. I love the new addition of flavourings for drinks. The tables are certainly squished together at the location in Ft Union, but we've all become accustomed to that! Great place! read more
