So, for no particular reason save our sleep schedule was severely off kilter, we were still up at 5 am one night, so we decided to hop in a car and drive east for an hour to see what the Hinkley Bakery was about. We are fans of donuts. All kinds of donuts. And using Sweetwater's Donuts as the local benchmark, we were interested to if the question could be answered: Could the Hinkley Bakery hype be for real, and could their donuts match or run past Sweetwater's donuts? We had been told by others that we "should prepare to have our minds blown" and that the donuts "were flat out amazing." We arrived at 6 am, the area still in darkness, and saw that the bakery, which opens at 5:30, already had six customers. We bought a selection, enough to fill a large box: powdered and sugar fried donuts, custard filled Long Johns, & cinnamon sugar crescents. So after sampling, was our question answered? Yes, it was. Is the hype about the Hinkley Bakery deserved? No. The donuts were okay. Were they better than what you would find at a grocery store or a chain like Dunkin'? Sure. Did they match or exceed what Sweetwater's has? No, not even close. But, as a caveat, normal people don't drive an hour for donuts. No one in Jackson is going to Kalamazoo to get their donut itch scratched. Which is really their loss, because if they did perhaps they'd stop swooning about the Hinkley bakery. So, I guess, if I lived in Jackson - god forbid - I would probably go regularly to the Hinkley bakery. But that's because there's not a lot of local competition. Maybe instead I'd cultivate a friendship with someone who regularly commuted from Kalamazoo so I could get my Sweetwater's fix. Other minor observations: 1. There is a dirt parking lot to the south of the building. Because there has been a drought in Michigan, the area was bone dry. I can't imagine what parking is like in the rain. No, I can imagine. Mud. And the parking lot was not well lit at night. I'm sure that makes the neighbors happy, but as a customer I love walking in an unlit parking lot because nothing bad ever happens in the dark in Jackson. 2. There are several steps up to the front entrance. The first step is a bit wonky. 3. Nothing is clearly labeled and prices are a bit elusive to locate. But the staff is nice and seem eager to inform if asked. read more

We love this place! They have the best donuts in Michigan! It is tough to go wrong here. It is also tough to decide sometimes which donuts to get since they're all so good. My personal fav's are the blueberry crescent, walnut glazed, and the mighty custard filled long John. We haven't been here in a while but we will go there again soon! This is the best donut shop in all of Jackson county! My 4th grade teacher's dad works there, with that she used to bring them into class on special occasions. And whenever I have them, they still taste as amazing as it did back then, and I am in 11th grade now! Almost all of their donuts are tasty. I've only had two; chocolate and glazed, but I imagine the other taste delicious as well. If I ever need donuts for an occasion, I am coming here, even if it's a drive. read more

One of the best donut shops that I have ever tasted and I have been to plenty! The doughnut without frosting is sweet enough to eat on it's own. We get a bag of donut holes which are glazed (I don't normally like glazed or long Johns) and I will be lucky if I get two doughnut holes! They make this blueberry doughnut with blue frosting and their chocolate covered doughnuts are the best! My mom loves long Johns and I now do but only here! I love their chocolate frosting the perfect donut, and the white cake frosting inside! So sweet though; I encourage you to eat slowly if you can! :-) read more

3 huge donuts for $3.10 & incl tax? What a steal! I've always wanted to stop by here whenever we're out west for a race. Since we were already at the Jackson Hot Air Jubilee, it was perfect! They're known for their blueberry crescents (similar to Dutch Girl donuts but bigger) but taste better I think. The glaze wasn't overwhelming, the fried cake not dry, and every bit blueberry-ey! Also got the Walnut Fritter as it looked like a Cronut with its square shape (like Home Bakery's in Rochester Hills). I was assured it's not a cronut but def a crowd fave. Sure enough, it's the best yeasty donut I've ever had! I was expecting the donut to just be a walnut topping on a sugar glaze but I was pleasantly surprised by the cinnamon swirls throughout...just like an apple fritter! Each bite revealed layers of soft & stretchy dough that any cronut fan would enjoy! It's one big donut that's for sure! Lastly, we're huge custard filled donut fans. Custard was good, no jello pudding-box tasting and the yeasty dough exterior was not stale but rather "different" as my fiancé claimed. He felt it was heavy for a yeast dough but I liked it being that it's the same type of dough with the walnut fritter. Like cotton candy pull apart softness. Hinkley Bakery is also known for their donut holes. You probably won't see them out b/c they sell just like that...hot cakes! And $3 for a dz, be sure to buy some even if you don't want any! My friends bought some to share and it was like that first bite of Krispy Kreme donut right off the conveyor belt....delicious! Don't expect bathroom, tables or chairs. Its an old Mom & Pop shop with a few danish pastries. Weekends have Dominique Ansel style lines out the door but it moves fast when there's 4-5 women at the counter ready to take your order. Plenty of parking in their lot or on the nearby streets. I can't imagine living nearby as we parked down the block (we had a huge 15passenger van & trailer) and could still smell it! You have to try to maneuver around the pot holes in the dirt parking lot and make it in during their odd hours, but it's worth it. You haven't had a real doughnut until you've experienced a Hinkley's doughnut. Take the Bavarian cream filled doughnut for instance....what is that called? A long john? In any case, if you get one from some place like Dunkin Donuts, you've got an okay sweet treat. It meets the standard requirements and if you're lucky, it hasn't been sitting on the shelf for too long. Hinkley's? Prepare to have your mind blown doughnut style. For starters it weighs around three pounds (okay, over exaggeration). The freshly deep fried that morning dough is slightly crispy on the outside, oozing the cream of your choice on the inside, and slathered with chocolate frosting on top. It is nothing short of amazing. Best donuts on the planet! I would wait in a big long line that wrapped around the building in 0 degree weather at 5am for these donuts. The donuts are seriously world famous. If you are ever in the area, you gotta try 'em. The blueberry crescents and the glazed donut holes are warm in the morning, which makes them twice as good. The people are so every time. The price is high for a donut, but worth it every time. Be careful before going though....their hours are kinda weird. read more
