In July 2023, I was looking for a jolt of caffeine on the long and tedious family road trip drive from Chicago to Ann Arbor, MI. We decided to make a pit stop in Jackson based on Yelp reviews. The strong espresso style coffee was worth a short detour off of I-94! You'll find the cafe in the downtown section of Jackson which is being revitalized. Enjoyed a Cafe Americano and friendly service from the barista. The owners of this place have created an oasis with a pleasant ambience. Parking is usually available in a small lot across the street. But be careful of the road construction projects in the middle of downtown. Jackson itself does not have a lot to do or see. You may see the walls of the Michigan State Prison (the first one built in the state from the mid-1800s) from a distance. read more

They roast all their beans in house and my favorite is the breakfast blend. Their lattes and frappuccinos are good but I think their brewed coffee really shines. The scones and biscotti are super tasty as well. Lots of seating upstairs. The staff are friendly and kind. read more

Had the most pleasant experience this morning at this little gem. Chatted it up with the barista about our love for the coffee industry when I arrived and ordered. She specialized a little drink for me that I would get time and time again if I lived here. Iced Americano with a splash of almond milk and a small amount of "Mayan mocha" flavoring. She described this as a spicy chocolate and I was sold. I enjoy a tiny bit of flavoring while still being able to taste the espresso. A lot of coffee shops I go to try to get espresso right but it normally comes out bitter and not creamy which is not a pleasant experience, however this place makes espresso the correct way !! I was there for a performance and just thought I would stop at the local coffee place before call. Evidently, my boss had the same idea because as I was leaving, she was arriving so I went back in with her and was able to relax and chat a while in a warm space before going to the church. Great Christmas decorations! Cool atmosphere with old fashion coffee grinders and coffee bags. Very friendly customer service and delicious coffee. What's there not to like? Jackson Coffee Company is one of my favorites! Even though I now live in California, I always try to visit when I am in town. They offer so many delicious and creative coffee, espresso, smoothie and tea drink options with milk alternatives as well! The employees are beyond friendly, and they have a great reward program. They also have various baked goods and offer seasonal drinks too! There is spacious seating upstairs or outside (during the summer months). They have some wonderful ladies serving the most wonderful cups of coffee you could ask for. it's a pet friendly place you can take your pets in there and they can have a pup cup while you have a big cup of Joe. So, I drove 45 minutes over to Jackson to check this place out. You see, I live just outside of Battle Creek, and evidently, I am the epicenter of the great light roasted, single origin, coffee bean drought of Michigan. Despite having several good sized roasters in the area, there doesn't seem to be any place within 100 miles that will roast their beans to any color other than black. I found the Jackson Coffee Company via the internet (of course), viewed their pictures on Yelp and their website, and was excited to see that they not only roasted in house, but promoted several seasonal single origin beans. As I was out of beans at home, I promptly set forth on a road trip... My GPS took me right to their front door, and I could smell the coffee roasting from two blocks away. I was excited! My excitement began to wane though when I got inside to see that the coffee currently roasting, was very, very dark. Couple this with the fact that they had exactly three 12oz. bags of dark roasted Honduran beansa available for purchase (cue disappointment here). I chatted with one of the counter girls, and when I asked some questions that she didn't know the answer to, she went in to the back and had their roaster come out and talk to me. Evidently they have been struggling with some supplier issues lately and won't have roasted beans for sale until later in the week. All was not lost though, I persuaded him to sell me a couple of pounds of green, unroasted beans. I figure that if I can find the roasted beans I want, I'll do the job myself and hack together a roaster at home! Even though he was busy and in the middle of roasting (and a myriad of other things), the fact that he stopped to talk to me and parcel out some green coffee beans made the trip worthwhile, and bumped up my rating. On the coffeehouse side; with the roaster operating, the interior was pretty noisy and hectic, and not at all conducive to staying there any length of time. I ordered a medium Cappuccino, and it was pretty much what I expected; way too hot, with strong overtones of burnt. read more

There is one frozen drink I love at JSO, otherwise they're a step-down from Starbucks, but with the same endgame. The difference is Starbucks is a successful corporation, & JSO is SUPPOSED to be local coffee which implies some integrity to the product. I've not had an experience with JSO I couldn't have had at any corporation which cost less. read more

As a Jackson native, this is the kind of coffee shop I wish existed when I still lived here. The original downtown location is amazing on an aesthetic level. They've converted an old, brick business building into a trendy joint. The wood floors are lived-in and wonderfully distressed. The upstairs has wooden support beams, expansive windows that overlook downtown, and rustic brick walls. It has the look and feel of a hip, gentrified neighborhood stop, but in Jackson. I love it. The coffee lives up to the look. There's over 12 different lattes alone. I like their takes on candy bar lattes (the Snickers is unparalleled). The Shamrock White latte delivers as well. If you're in the mood for light conversation, a first date, studying or just getting out of the house to read, this is the perfect place to do it. read more

Coming from a state with Coffeehouses practically on every corner, I was pretty impressed with the quality, originality, and presentation of their own roasted coffees, their teas and specialty drinks. I must admit, my first visit in 2014, I hadn't high expectations, but was willing to give them a try as an out-of-towner, and boy howdy was I pleasantly impressed! The folks behindvthe counter are not too caramelized with sweetness, but they are rather friendly and engage in conversation with their customers...I love that about this town. The feel of being welcomed without shoving too hard to get to the next customer. An art that is lost in the Metropolises of the country. The ambience was eclectic, well suited for a coffeehouse. As you climb the stairs, a feature I somehow skipped on my first visit, but rather discovered on my second and third visits, is amazing with the space upstairs. I suppose they host live music and large groups when needed, or if you just want to relax with a book, your earphones, or tackle homework for a bit...this is an awesome spot to consider. The finishing polished touch for me though, was the genuine authentic customer service and friendliness. I like this place as it's in the center of a newly stared revitalization of downtown Jackson. This place is perfect. Coffee is great. Lots of mixed drink options. Lots of places to relax up and downstairs. The prices aren't too bad either. Their large regular coffee is $1.00 cheaper than any other place in town (biggby). I would say the coffee was disappointing, but that would imply that I expected it to be better than awful. Not only did it taste bad, but it wasn't even filtered properly, and there were a lot of grounds that made their way into my cup. I wasn't going to waste my money trying the espresso. And flavored coffee? I feel insulted. Waste of space. read more

I will definitely be back! I really like this place. They roast their own coffee beans, have some delicious teas, and not to mention a little ice cream dispenser. What I like the most is the funky atmosphere; there is an array of eclectic things hanging on the walls, the people are super nice and friendly (there's one girl who has a photographic memory who remembers your order), and photos of family and friends. You just feel right at home here. There's some nice outdoor seating and there's free wi-fi access. Lots of regulars come here. I got the ice chai tea and it was seriously the best iced chai I have had in a while. It was seriously good. This place is so good that in a week, my bf and I almost filled out an entire punch card. The only bad thing about this place - the hours are really limited (I mean, closed on Sunday? Seriously?!). Oh well, it's definitely worth it while it's open. Friend: Nothing to do downtown but fine. Ten minutes later... Downtown = Numerous shuttered stores, big utility company, two big office buildings, and Jackson Coffee Co. Wow. Clearly stands out among its lesser achieving retail neighbors. The owner is a friendly and funny guy - definitely knows the locals. I was in the middle of my espresso and coffee hiatus so no comments on the beans, but they do roast in-house. I definitely appreciate the local character of the cafe and the time and effort spent by the owner to keep it the way it is. My brother, who lives in the area, wanted to show off his local dive to this visiting LA Starbucks queen. I love this place! The roaster, the ambiance, the vibe, the comfort level, the "hipsterness", the fab upstairs room is everything I love about a coffee shop. Very quaint, very friendly. Comfy chairs and sofas galore. I could "hear" the band and the crowd that would be there the next night. I could also relax and enjoy the quiet. And my brown sugar latte was wonderful and not too sweet. Meh. Chipper - too chipper. Good coffee, but had to deal with a faulty, leaking cup. As for the alleged bagel - I had to explain three times that I just wanted a bagel, not toasted, no goop, no gummy bears on it, just a bagel. Q: What did they give me? THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE THIS! I credit this place with everything cool about Jackson. (Except Cascades - that was there first.) But come on. Downtown Jackson needed a hub for the cool kids to come get some caffeine and write poetry. This is the place. The space is huge, the service is quick but not hurried, the seating is comfortable and cozy, and the coffee is - believe it or not - excellent. You literally cannot ask for more from a coffee house. This is my go to every time I'm in Jackson. Plus, they make a true Italian cappuccino. It's a rare find. If you like foam, I highly recommend it. read more

I would have assumed because this is a local coffee company that there would have been more integrity when it came to the coffee drinks. I have yet to meet a barista at Jackson Coffee Co who can properly steam milk for a latte. The milk is usually typically just heated up, and often over temperature. As a person who worked as a barista for sometime I find this incredibly irritating. Beyond that, the quality of products used isn't impressive. The baked goods and snacks provided are generic processed foods from major companies. Everything about this coffee shop screams fast food coffee, and the term "locally owned" only seems to make this irony worse. I love give money and business to local owners, and have a soft spot in my heart for coffee house culture. That said, Jackson Coffee Company has consistently proved to me why I still buy Starbucks. read more

This place has a nice feel to it. It was a little industrial, not your typical cozy coffee place. I think there is an upstairs sitting area but I am not sure because I didn't go up there! I hope there is because there really isn't much sitting space in the main floor. About 5 stools at a bar that looks out onto the street and then maybe 4 two person tables. My coffee was fairly good. I got an americano. It was so incredibly hot that even with another cup and a sleeve I still couldn't actually hold it for a good 10 minutes let alone actually drink it. Very glad I came here to have coffee! I come to Jackson a couple times of year to see my in-laws, and I like to try all the small businesses in town. This coffee was excellent, roasted to perfection, and I absolutely loved the building. This business has a lot of charm and I'm very happy with the service.
