They'd probably get five stars for their cutesy, fun, gifty things for the mother-in-law that's impossible to buy for or for that ridiculously preppy engaged couple, but since we're basing it on the complete experience, if you want to regale in that warm and fuzzy "Hi, I'm-better-than-you" feeling, step into this store. No doubt they lose one star *each* for the two women at the front desk I encountered last weekend. I say "encounter" because they were, indeed, of a third kind. Fine, I understand... I'm a 20-something...perhaps I'm not wearing enough Talbots or grosgrain ribbon or something for you, but honestly, cut with the snob act. If I could have lifted my leg that high, the one giving me the leering eye would have gotten a mouthful of clog...seriously.

It's a delightful sunny little store with lovely canvases, a good selection of different kinds of fibers and other needlepoint supplies. They have classes for all levels, as well as one-on-one help. They have finishing services to turn completed canvases into pillows, ornaments, belts, etc. There are also beautifully stitched examples all around the shop. The co-owners are friendly and knowledgeable. One is a former owner of Needlepoint of Back Bay, the shop that was a couple of blocks away on Newbury Street. The shop also carries gorgeous yarn for knitting and crocheting, along with patterns and classes. They're a refreshing alternative to the rudeness and hostility you encounter at Knitting and Needlepoint on Newbury street. Some things I loved in no particular order: 1. Wendy was helpful and responsive during the planning/booking process. 2. She was professional, prepared, and on time. 3. The lesson and materials were of high quality. Wendy demonstrated value with her advice and recommendations, offering us insights into how we could make our own candles without the professional equipment, on a lower budget, or just getting creative with different vessels etc. All the scents she brought with her (there were soooo many and she'd have even more if we went into the studio!) smelled AMAZING and true to what they were supposed to smell like. 4. The display and attention to detail were just phenomenal. Check out the pictures! We decorated the space for the party of course and the setup really enhanced the vibe we were going for! So beautiful and classy! 5. Wendy is just a really cool person! It was a pleasure working with her as well as just chatting and laughing with her during the craft. The whole group (8 of us) had nothing but praise afterwards. The highest recommendations for this wonderful local business! I definitely want to visit the studio and will be using Create & Escape again for future events, and you should too!

I embarrassingly will admit it took me a few months to get back to pick them up, and thankfully they still had them waiting in the back. Also, the garage DOES go through to the back of the building where The Painting Place is - so the directions are correct. They even had pre-made paint palettes as an option. They also have some pottery pieces and things you can paint and take home the same day, but you can't eat from those items as they don't go thru the kiln. There wasn't a ton of variety in the pottery pieces to choose from, and the prices were a bit high compared to what I've seen in the past. We enjoyed our time. There were only two other parties there so it was very quiet and peaceful. Tip: if you use GPS for directions, it'll point you to the building across from theirs. They're right across from the Russian School. Their sign is a bit hidden. They do have a free parking lot.
