5 stars for the Block Island Ferry system. My two kids, spouse, and myself did a one-day round trip…read morejourney from Narraganset to Block Island in mid-November. Off-season for Block Island but if you are prepared for a bit of a ghost town situation on a warmer than usual fall day, I highly recommend doing it! We took the 1-hour ferry which traveled at about 16 knots, according to the captain of the ferry. Unfortunately this was fast enough for me to get a little sea sick on the way, but the rest of my family was fine. We took advantage of the snack/beverage bar on both rides, and our only complaint was that they were out of hot dogs that day. But did we get coffee, wine, beer, water, juice, chips, candy, nachos, and pistachios? You bet we did. Occasionally the waters got a little rough -- blustery, rainy November evening on the way back, and waves splashed over the bough of the boat, so they closed that part off. But when it was calmer we got to go to the front as well as the back, and the upper deck. One tip -- if you plan on taking your vehicle on board, reserve a spot early. We purchased our tickets the day before and there was only a waitlist. Next time we'd love to take our car on board and avoid renting a car from a random parking lot on the island. It made for an adventure, but it would be easier to have our own car, as the island is big enough that you need some form of wheels. On Block Island, I recommend both lighthouses, and the Irish restaurant within waling distance of the ferry port. We also visited the 1661 exotic animal farm, the yellow kittens bar, a coffee shop, and the grocery store, as well as some beaches. You can take your dog on board and there were several, obviously all on leash. A memorable experience bookended by the ferry.

Parking is easy. You can pay online for the parking, which makes it very convenient. The ferry…read moreseems to run like a well oiled machine. For a smoother ride sit inside towards the back. I personally enjoyed being off to the side. I purchased tickets in advance online. You can put your tickets in your Apple wallet which is so convenient! The ferry was pretty clean and the trip was not too long. The snack bar was a nice treat. There are tables to sit out as well.

The boat ride is great, but the shuttle bus going from Woods Hole to Thomas Landers was harrowing…read more It's partly due to some of the drivers barking at you and treating you poorly, but it's also due to your fellow passengers being extremely inconsiderate and selfish. They want to ensure they get their huge suitcases on the luggage bins, so they block you from moving down the aisle. My husband and I were the 6th and 7th to board the bus, but were the last to be able to sit down. When I tried to place a bag on the bin, a man who had an angry expression on his face picked up his heavy, enormous suitcase and forcefully slammed it down in the direction of my bag and hand. I got my bag and arm out of the way just in time. It's like the hunger games. I quickly realized that I should give up stowing my bags on the bin, but just make my way to the back of the bus and hold my luggage on my lap, but the people boarding through the middle door wouldn't let us pass, because they were so intent on dominating the luggage bin. I asked a woman who was standing in front of the steps that led to the back of the bus if she could let me go by, and she said, "NO!" She had plenty of room to move away from the two steps that led to the back of the bus, but was just being belligerent. Unfortunately, a lot of people who go to Martha's Vineyard or live there are beyond rude. This wasn't the case years ago, but it has become overcrowded and overrun by entitled people who only think about their own needs, and they treat others like dirt.
