The B.I. Ferry
Kim V.

This is a year-round ferry in Galilee, a fishing village located in Point Judith, which is also a village located in Narraganset, RI. The traditional ferry takes approximately 55 minutes one-way (from Galilee to Block Island) and cars and moped can be transported on it. There is a high speed ferry which takes approximately 30 minutes one-way but no cars are allowed on it. The ferry runs in other locations in the summer; those locations are Newport, RI, New London, CT, and Orient/Montauk, NY. Parking lots nearby are independently owned and there are fees associated with them. A concession stand is located on the ferry; there's a full bar, hot dogs, snacks, coffee, and other drinks. There are restrooms too. We were able to walk around the ferry while it was moving. There were plenty of seats but it does get packed in the summer months. It's relaxing to just sit and watch the ferry cruise away. We brought our moped and was able to sit with it at the bottom floor. The way they load the cars are pretty impressive; it's a tight fit but they do maximize the space. I have fond memories of taking this ferry to the island. Tip: bring a light sweater, it can get chilly on the ocean; and of course, bring all your picnic essentials. Overall, I highly recommend it!

Slow ferry was a little over an hr for about $11 The fast ferry on the way back was $25 and about half the time. Point A to point B on time!

A solid experience. Made my first venture to BI and they were great. Left both locals on time, fast and easy bordering and professional staff.

From Point Judith near Narragansett there are two ferries to Block Island, the high speed ferry and the Traditional Ferry and the High Speed Ferry. We chose the High Speed Ferry, which takes about 30 minutes and costs $50 per person for same day round trip passenger only (no bike) tickets. The Traditional Ferry costs about half that amount but takes almost twice as long (55 minutes). However, the Traditional Ferry appeared to have much more outside seating space, which we were unable to secure on the High Speed Ferry for either segment. Weekends appear to be very busy for the High Speed Ferry, if the routes weren't sold out, they were certainly packed. Positives + The route to the ferry was clearly marked + There was sufficient parking + The seating was fairly comfortable + There was AC inside + It departed on time and arrived on time + Mediocre snack bar on board (so you can get something to eat or drink) Negatives - Packed, every seat looked taken, some people were standing - Seats very close together - Limited outdoor seating - Queue starts early, likely need to be in line 30 minutes before departure to get an outside seat - Mediocre snack bar (better than nothing) - Lengthy wait for departure queue Overall, it got us there on time, and the ride was "fine". We enojoyed the ferry from Providence to Newport much more, partially because we were able to secure an outside seat without issue.

Leaving from Pt. Judith, we opted for the traditional ferry, which takes about an hour to reach Block island. They also offer high speed service which gets you there in half the time for twice the money. Buy tickets on-line for any day or time, but those tickets are non-transferable, so be in time. You can also purchase them on site just before departure, if space is available. There are two parking lots across the street from the terminal for both same day and long term parking, at about $10/day. Or, make a reservation and bring the car for the trip. Moped and bike rentals are available at several locations on the island. Taxi's and tour vans are also waiting by the boat. You can also pay a small fee to bring your own bike with you on the ferry. There is a spot on the car deck where you can leave your bike, cooler, suit case and what not during the trip. Besides the car deck, there are three levels. Most of the seating is outdoors and even in the sun, it gets pretty cold out there with the breezes once you are underway. There is a small snack bar on the upper deck and the line was constant! They serve coffee, soft drinks, a few food items (like a bagel), beer and cocktails. They take credit cards for these items and you can only be served once the ferry is underway. The outdoor seating is benches, indoor it a bit more comfortable. We took two different style ferries, once had booth style tables and seats by the windows inside, and rows of cushioned seats in the middle. The other had seating along the outer edges and storage boxes in the middle. There are life vests on the upper two levels and lots of rafts for emergency deployment is needed. Neither ferry was over crowded, but there were still plenty of people making the trip. The traditional ferry is a pretty basic vessel. No frills. The restroom was very clean going both directions leading me to think they clean before each trip. But boy was it HOT in there! And the stalls are tiny. I had to stand next to the toilet bowl in order to shut the stall door. Really small. Toilets, water and hand towels in the restroom are 'touchless'. There is a baby changing station in the ladies room, but not in the men's room. An announcement is made just before docking for car owners to get in their vehicle, while other guests are asked to remain 'off the stairs' for safety reasons. Cars drive off, before other passengers are allowed to disembark. Staff were all pleasant. Online reservations are easy. They take credit cards both at the terminal and on the ferry. Tour vans, taxi's, bike and scooter rentals are right at the Block Island Ferry dock as well as a block or two in land.

Great experience! Easy to get on board and find a seat for a great view! Smooth sailing and clean ferry!

Love the fishing boat scene at the mainland dock! It's a great scene if you're into that. I had naïvely thought I could get my car on the ferry with no reservation. You really can't. Two round trip walk on tickets bought at the ticket window were $60 for the slow boat. Between boarding, the ride and disembarking the trip takes about an hour and a half. Took off a few minutes late but I think we made the time up. Plenty to see on the trip.

We live closer to the New London, CT ferry but drive the extra hour to catch the Point Judith ferry because the tickets are cheaper and there are more options. There's $10 parking right across the street if you arrive early enough. You can take the regular ferry or the high speed option will get you there half the time. The ride is beautiful and the staff have always been so nice and helpful!

Ask the Community - Block Island Ferry

Can you bring your own alcohol on the ferry?

I believe you can but the bar is inexpensive and the selection is nice for the short ride over to the island.

My boyfriend and I plan to go in a week or two, and we already bought our tickets. However, weather looks iffy for the day we selected. Will they allow me to switch the day?

There were people switching tickets for different times when we were there

Perfect day trip--great way to explore Newport and Jamestown…read more While winging it around Newport this past weekend, our thoughtful server at the White Horse Tavern recommended we check out the Jamestown Newport Ferry--and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. We arrived casually at the dock around 10 AM and hopped on without much planning. Our first stop was Fort Adams, where we enjoyed some surprisingly interesting historical sights. The timing was perfect--about an hour and ten minutes later, the next ferry arrived and took us to Rose Island Lighthouse. That visit was a standout. The guide was excellent, and we were fascinated to learn you can actually stay overnight at the lighthouse--definitely something we're planning to do in the future. (Fair warning: if you're not a fan of birds or geese, you might want to skip this stop.) Next, we cruised over to Jamestown, where the ferry crew recommended the Narraganset tavern and dinner at JB's on the Water. Enjoyed both. We were back in Newport by around 7 PM, totally relaxed, and without ever feeling rushed. Fine people, friendly staff, no stress--just a great way to experience the bay. I highly recommend the Jamestown Newport Ferry if you're visiting the area.

I am currently in a musical in Jamestown, and always try to take the boat over when I can- it gets me in the right zen headspace to do my best at rehearsal, and what better way to soak up the last few warm days before we head into fall and winter? The ferry offers different ticket packages (I usually just go for the discounted "Evening Special" ticket, but there's a daylong "Hop On Hop Off" pass where you can travel from Jamestown to Fort Adams, to Downtown Newport, and even the Rose Island Lighthouse at leisure. If I had more free time, that would be a great way to see the area for sure. Prices are reasonable (20-40 USD per guest, depending on the ticket type), and it's a wonderful way to see the City by the Sea on the sea! The boats are rustic but comfortable, with padded benches and enough seating for 20-25 guests per vessel. The crew is friendly, and alcoholic and soft beverages are available for purchase on board. Definitely add this fun ferry crossing to your itinerary next time you are in Newport!

Great execution, slow response in planning…read more We loved working with South County Trolley. The trolley was clean and the driver was very helpful and attentive, particularly with regard to my dress and the rain. He had champagne and water bottles ready for us and took song requests fired at him one after the next. Day of execution was 5 stars. That said, we docked stars here because of the booking and confirmation process. The company wasn't very responsive, even when I called to say I wanted to pay them, and it took over a week for us to get a confirmation of their services in advance of the wedding. I only heard back from Betsy after multiple voicemails and emails from both me and my husband the week before the wedding. Overall I recommend the trolley experience, everyone loved it, but I'd just be regimented with follow up in advance of the day

Ted showcases the little town in existance, but paints the scenes of the past with delightful stories. A lifetime of community involvement has made Ted's knowledge of Narragansett the wealthiest in existance. From the Pt. Judith Lighthouse to the URI Bay Campus and South Ferry Church, the trolley explores the fascinating history of the town with soulful narratives." This doesn't even begin to describe the tour I took in August. Owner Charles "Ted" Wright delivers a colorful, interesting and in-depth view into the history of Narragansett beginning with the towers all through the different owners of the mansions including the magnificent hotels of the late 1800's to the early 1900's, the bunkers at the Bay Campus (Fort Kearny,) and the World War II prisoners of war and their newspaper, Druid's Dream, St. Peter's church and it's historic past, all the way down to Pt. Judith Light house and back! Any person that is interested in history and has read up on Narragansett's history will be more than pleased with Ted Wright's stories from his past about Buckytown and the time they fired the guns at Fort Greene. This ride is about 2 hours. I originally didn't want to go on this tour thinking that $15 was way too pricey for any kind of tour. I was glad to have spent the money to hear Mr. Wright's stories and entertaining facts about the many events, places and people who existed here in this small seaside community. Even though I knew some facts that most people don't know about Narragansett like there used to be a train that came to Narragansett Pier and there were huge hotels along Ocean Road that were well known and visited I was not disappointed in founding out new and unusual things that happened and people that lived here. The few people that took this tour with my friend and I were treated to a ride on Ted Wright's first trolley: the Onnie and Angie Trolley, named after the two people who convinced Ted to buy it. The ocean breeze flowed through the windows as we drove first to St. Peter's and toured the church, through Narragansett Pier down to the Point Judith Light house via Scarborough beach back to the Towers. Before we drove to the Bay Campus we were asked if anyone wanted to disembark before continuing on. We drove past South Ferry Road Church into the Bay Campus then back by Narrow River up Bridgetown Road into Narragansett Pier and the neighborhood behind the beach area. Even though I was afraid that it would be too hot to do such a tour, the trolley allowed the cooling ocean air to flow through open windows. Ted narrated the tour and it was loud enough for everyone to hear. If you missed anything he didn't mind passengers asking questions and invited people to ask about anything they heard. "In the months of July and August, the trolley leaves from The Towers every Wednesday to roam , returning at Noon. Cost of Tour: $15 After the tour, join Wednesday Luncheons the The Towers by Tom's Market Catering. Cost of Luncheon: $14.50 per person" (You are not obliged to go to the luncheon.) The tour begins at 10:00 am. I recommend arriving early. We were able to get a parking space on Ocean Road close to the Narragansett Chamber of Commerce. You meet the Trolley Tour on the opposite side under the Towers. A woman takes your money or personal check and gives you a ticket. You board the trolley and she takes a head count and then takes your ticket. If you enjoy history but have a difficult time walking this is an excellent tour. If you have a Wednesday morning to spend and want to discover facts about Narragansett and the seaside community that was here more than 100 years ago this is an excellent way to do it. My only regret is that Mr. Wright hasn't recorded his tour on CD or written a book.

The presenter was very detailed in his presentation and injected humor whenever possible. It also helped that the weather was picture-perfect! This comprehensive cruise paired magnificently with the bevy of excellent beverages served on board. You could have the boat's signature cocktail, aptly named a Bay Breeze, or enjoy a beer from local brewery Whalers. After putting a few bad boys back, I had built up an appetite for what many may call the "Perfect Mariner Food". Fish tacos? No way. Hot dogs. I ventured into the cabin to the snack bar in search of my favorite tube-shaped delight, only to find bagels and candy in sight. A steamy, shiny glizzy perfectly cooked on rollers for 60+ minutes was what I needed right then and there and this is where the Rhode Island Fast Ferry fell flat on its face. A Ferry Hot Dog, or a "Ferry Dog" which is what I've come to call these slender pieces of perfection, would have hit the spot perfectly and most likely, would have brought my appreciation of historical lighthouses to new heights. The addition of a Ferry Dog to this visionary voyage would have made it a 7.3 star experience at a bare minimum. Rhode Island Fast Ferry...please fix this oversight and stop this aggression against Ferry Dogs.
