Chicken Tikka Masala with Naan Bread
    Kathy W.

Himalaya hits the spot, especially on a rainy day (which we seem to be having a lot of lately). Not far from the Berlin train station, Himalaya is takeout only, and seems to have been for some time. The dining room is darkened and blocked off, with a sign directing you to the pickup table. There was a noticeable smell of mold upon entering...possibly due to the aforementioned rain? But the food was perfectly fine, if a little chilly in temperature. Nothing a quick zap in the microwave can't fix. I went with good ol' chicken tikka masala, but there are plenty of options for the more adventurous. You are required to choose a spice level, and as the heat increases, so does the price! I chose "mild" but would definitely kick it up a notch or two next time. All in all, I enjoyed my quick lunch and would put Himalaya on the short list next time I'm craving Indian takeout.

We ordered takeout from Himalaya tonight (upon pickup we realized it's takeout only anyway.) It's a rainy cold day here so Indian food is always a cozy comfort food option to us. The food was ready in 25 minutes as promised. Everyone there is quiet, but polite and kind. The tikka masala is a home run. The flavors are on point and the best we've had since our favorite Indian place in Wallingford closed down pre covid. The color is stunning and the depth of flavor is unmatched. The portion is generous also - we split the entree and were stuffed. The picture I posted was half an entree for reference. Next time I would ask to kick up the heat(spice) a notch as it is very mild. Please note that in general I prefer food very spicy. So if you do not like spice, please know you can order this without fear. We also ordered vegetarian samosas and garlic naan. Both were a nice surprise and even better than we imagined. This is our new go-to for Indian and we will be frequent flyers for sure!

Somewhere over China Six thousand miles away I could buzz the Himalayas Barrel roll above Hong Kong Set her down in San Francisco To the clanging of the gong (Jimmy Buffett) I walked into Himalaya yesterday fully expecting to see a lunch buffet, but either I misread some reviews or they have changed their lunch buffet policy. Oh well, I was in the mood for Indian, so I stayed and as I was checking out the menu, a nice complimentary dish of very thin and crisp poppadum (Indian bread) and a trio of sauces and chutneys appeared. There were sweet onions in a mild red sauce, a light brownish sweet sauce that reminded me of a vinaigrette, and a mildly spicy green sauce. I finished all of them! I went straight to the lunch menu and chose Shrimp Korma ($10.90) with a medium spice level. Very soon, I had three dishes plopped onto my table - a nice portion of Basmati rice, quite a few slices of Naan bread, and a piping hot dish with five shrimp in a traditional Indian Curry sauce. It tasted great, and that medium level spice was a sneaky bastard, it had a slow developing burn and I loved it. Thank you Himalaya, I had a very enjoyable lunch indeed, no buffet withstanding.

We love good Indian food and luckily we found his spot only 10 minutes from home. Just be aware right now it is takeout or delivery only. We ordered the lamb samosa app garlic naan, lamb korma, and lamb vindaloo. When I got home and opened the bag I was pleasantly surprised! They packed that thin cracker I believe is called papadum with different dipping sauces...oh so tasty. The lamb samosa had nice spices mixed in the ground lamb with a nice crisp on the outside. Garlic naan had lots of garlic and herbs on it. Both entrees were delicious and came with rice to serve with. Definitely worth a try if your craving Indian!

The aloo dam was tasty and flavourful, and it would have paired wonderfully with rice or some sort of bread. The veg momos were steaming hot and fresh. The sauces that came with them added a lot of flavour: I'm not sure if I would have enjoyed the momos as much without them. The veg thali came with rice, greens, dal, cauliflower gravy, aloo dam, kheer and pickles. The dal was the standout item. It was my first time trying Tibetan butter tea, and the server warned me that it would be a little salty. The tea had a lovely nutty flavour and thin consistency. I enjoyed it from the perspective of novelty, but I'm not sure if I'll get it again. The server was extremely sweet and service was prompt. The ambience was very pretty, with Tibetan bric a brack and art on the walls. The music was also very soothing. One caveat however is that the food is very, very light and simple, and probably not one immediately thinks of as being "restaurant food" - it has a homemade quality to it. Portions are quite small, and prices are relatively high. Overall, I will return and likely try the chowmein and thukpa.

Restaurant was empty when we walked in for lunch on a weekday. Menu is not expansive but has decent number of options. We got **Thukpa- Nepali noodle soup- this was a bit flavorless, just a lingering taste of tamarind. **fried rice- probably the best dish we ordered but it had a lot of oil. Chicken was overcooked as well. **chow mein- very greasy **chilli chicken- sweet and spicy, I didn't enjoy the sweetness. It had some crunchy veggies. **veggie momos- avoid them if possible. The filling was somehow just not apt for the momo. Overall, the food was greasy, quantities were pathetically less.

I actually tried calling the restaurant to make this request, but they didn't answer after a few attempts. Fortunately, they did it proactively. I ordered the Beef Thukpa (cold spicy noodles) and the Sha Khodhak. The cold noodles were good, and I appreciated the cake, although not too spicy. What I do like, even though it may not be the traditional way to eat it as you can microwave it if you choose. If I were to order it again, I might try it warmed up. But for me, the star of the show Sha Khodhak. The tomato sauce was so richly flavored. Absolutely perfect and spiced to perfection. They did not skim with the chicken and they did not add an unnecessary amount of bell pepper and onion. It was perfectly balanced. The leftovers came together even more the next day. It's not too often that you come across a Tibetan restaurant so I've had this place on my list for a few months. I would like to try more of what they offer, but it's going to be hard not to order the Sha Khodhak again.
