Hilltop pub is such a hidden gem - admittedly I'm a little biased as it's fairy close to my home. It could be considered a bit of a dive bar, but I mean that in the good way! Beer is reasonably priced, so grabbing a couple whilst taking in a game is doable for most budgets. The selection won't blow your mind, but who cares! The food is delish. I particularly enjoy the wings, and those nacho plates, HUGE! They usually have bands on a Saturday night too and I'm almost always left feeling really impressed by the talent. It's kind of hard to judge a bar based on Halloween weekend. Everyone was dressed up and super crazy. The band was excellent. People were dancing. Our server was slammed, so quite often we would go up to the bar to get our own beers. $5.25 per pint. Not the greatest beer selection. Did not try the food. It's kind of an old looking bar and there's really no decor. The bathrooms were clean and stocked. That's about it. read more

Not a bad place. Inside was old school pub. Very dated inside, but I went there for the food. First time going there. I ordered the hilltop burger. Double beef patty with bacon and cheese for $13. Only complaint was the fry portion was really small. Overall good value tho! Frozen pre made patties. The wife found the food greasy but I thought it was good. Had a order of wings, they are on special Wednesday for 35 cents each. Our burgers came out before the wings I had to remind the waitress about them and she went and got them. Bathroom is needing Reno's bad and smells of ammonia from urine. Pretty nasty they could at least put some urinal pucks in. But all that said the waitress was really nice and welcoming and I found it was a great value for what I got. Will I go back? Probably but I'd have to leave the wife at home. read more

This place strikes me as, old mans pub... but I kinda dig it. There was actually darts on the TV. It's the only pub nearby that I could actually walk to, so I'm please to have it here. I know when my father in law comes to visit, he will be the new local in there. Sport on the TV, beer in the taps and decent pub banter, it does the job. They have specials on every day, and Wednesday is Wing Wednesday. 35c per wing! Decent deal! We tried the salt and pepper and the honey garlic wings. Both were delicious and came with a large portion of dipping sauces. This place has a no minors policy so no taking the kids in here. They do have wifi and it's a decent connection too. The place is big inside with booths, tables and ample seating available. I spotted a pool table but never played. The ladies washrooms are surprisingly nice and they have wheelchair access throughout the place. It's sketchy but what good dive bar isn't? read more

This place is practically the prototype for a dive bar. It's unremarkable from almost every standpoint, from decor to design to furniture to clientele. Almost unbearably average in every conceivable fashion. But it does have room for a band. That's good. And it's got a pool table. That's good. But the area around the pool table reeks like urine. That's bad. But, you know what? You'll come here. You have to. Because there's nowhere else to go in this neighborhood. Your typical dive bar, Hilltop has a couple of pool tables, some VLTs, a punching bag machine, and what looks like a small area for live music. Dark, gloomy & outdated as expected, it does have outdoor seating if you care to avoid the dreariness of inside. Like many places similar to Hilltop, they have junk out in the open that should be stashed away where customers can't see them. The Hilltop is what you would expect from a neighborhood bar however the waitress's and staff are very friendly and will treat you well. The menu, has burgers, pizza, combo platter and Chinese Rice Bowls. In my opinion the rice bowls are the best thing on the menu and the best value for the money. Other things in this bar include what you would typically expect to see in a neighborhood pub, pool tables, dart boards, VLT's and a jukebox for your listening pleasure. One complaint I have is that the restrooms at least the Men's restroom is in severe need of renovation and cleanup. This pub is close to my house, so I go time to time. Their food is decent- the norm pub food. However their burgers I would say are above average. Loaded- huge and very filling. I have yet to finish one. I will say they have pretty good pizza too, but it does take awhile for them to make. The atmosphere is pretty relaxed, always pretty steady in there. I will say that the manager is very nice- My boyfriend and I happened to be there on a Tuesday evening and they have trivia night, which we weren't aware of...Alot of regulars come out for this from what I could tell. The manager came around and told us about it and asked if we were interested, we had nothing planned so we stayed for it. I can't say that we were pros at trivia, but the manager helped us, probably because we were new, and it just so happened that with a little help we won! $50 GC to come back. We have been since a few times- enjoyed it each time. I will say that there is one waitress/bartender that I am not fond off, just isn't very friendly like the rest. I haven't reviewed in a while, but you need to be warned. This place sucks. Yes, typical dive bar. Yeah, not very clean, terrible bathrooms, stinks like skunky beer. Ok, I put up with that because I kind of liked the karaoke with Ron. That said... we went tonight, and instead of the usually nice and cheerful waitresses, we got the manager doing the waitressing. Wow. What an awful person. She was curt at first, and then just rude. So, it's barely tolerable on a normal night, but with the manager on shift? Wow. Just duck and cover. This spot has pretty good specials every day of the week, It is kind of run down but is very clean. The wings we got were very good and the beer was cold. Our server was super friendly and everything was delivered to the table promptly. There is pool and darts to play, the crowd was mostly older men. It's a cliche neighbourhood pub but definitely one of the better ones I have been to and if you're on the hunt of a cheap meal walking distance from a lot of homes this is it. read more

Exactly what I expect from a dive bar - dark, sort of older decor, pool tables, and VLTs. There are several TVs broadcasting sports that were turned out pretty loud to the point that it was hard to carry on a conversation. The menu is quite decent though, and the steak sandwich is excellent: tender and flavourful, but I wish the fries were a bit better. They were kind of meh and average. Prices are good, and it's a fun place to come after work to shoot a few rounds of pool. I think there is live music here on a regular basis as well. read more

POOR SERVICE and SO RUDE! This server made us leave immediately after we ordered 3 shots and 3 jäger bombs. She only used 1 can of redbull on ALL three jägerbombs so of course we asked for a bit more and she became completely defensive and felt like we were criticizing her. After trying to explain that wasn't the case and we just wanted more red bull, she wanted to charge us $4.50 for an extra can. Tired of arguing, we agreed to this ridiculous charge, and she SLAMS the can on the bar. When we asked her to pour it for us, she went ballistic and told us to get the fuck out (isn't it her job to pour us drinks?? Pretty sure you shouldn't be swearing at your customers). Tried this place last night for the first time. It's an older establishment of good size, feels comfortable like going over to a friends place. Staff were very friendly & prompt. We were a group of 8 & two people had to wait longer for food so they offered 50% off to them which I thought was very decent. Fridays their loaves are 20% & pony kegs with 3 oz of alcohol & mix are $12.75! 4 of our group had the loaves, they looked great, quite large. The small nachos were not on the menu & were huge for $10. I had the teriyaki chicken rice bowl for $9.95 & it was great. It didn't feel dirty or stinky, washrooms are older but clean. My only complaint was they could have turned up the heat. I think our Friday pub group may add this location to our regular rotation, definitely will go back. read more

My husband and I used to go to the Hilltop all the time when we lived right around the corner. It's just our sort of place--no pretense, good pub grub, and solid service. We were regulars at Tuesday trivia night, but they stopped last fall for hockey season and didn't pick it up again (as far as we know). We loved cutting up with the owner and staff, too. We still go there whenever we need an excellent burger, and it's one of the few bars in Edmonton where you can have a conversation without having to yell over the music. read more

Do not try to order food unless you are at the point of malnutrition, you will have a better experience heating up microwaveable meals and pizza pops to satisfy your taste buds.
