Now that summer is finally here (thanks it's Labor Day already), I need to get the kids out to cool off and have some summer fun. Hilltop Park is great for this. Nestled in cute El Segundo, this park has plenty of parking and a wonderful pool for the kids. The pool is $3 per swimmer 2 and older. It is very shallow - 1 1/2 feet deep to 2 1/2 feet for half of the pool and the other half goes from 2 1/2 feet to 3 1/2 feet. The water is warm and the lifeguards are really nice. This is kind of like the neighborhood pools you see on TV where all the pretty moms come everyday with their kids to splash and play. It seemed like everyone knew each other. There are benches inside but some people brought their own chairs. Also, no floaties or water wings allowed (this was kind of a bummer!), but you can have noodles, kick-boards, water guns, water rings. There was also a restroom with a dressing room right next to the pool.

This is a cute, little park with easy parking. My son, who is four, was not tall enough to do most of the big kid equipment. He could only play on the little kids equipment by himself or the big kid equipment with assistance. He still really enjoyed the park. He loves the circular swing. There is also a pool there. It was tiny, and had several lifeguards. It's a cute park to check out if you happen to be in the neighborhood. This is not a destination park.

So there I was cutting through residential El Segundo to avoid traffic on Sepulveda by LAX...... and what do I discover but a park! Woohooo! On top of a hill, with its own parking lot and.......ta da.....a swimming pool! Holy crap what a lucky neighborhood. There were young mothers with toddlers sunning on beach blankets in the grassy area next to the pristine little pool. They were happily chatting away while the kiddies played, in their own private summer paradise. Enter the parking lot just to the north of the park. You can't see it from the street, you have to go up a driveway to the top of the hill. Then you'll look down on the large playground and the pool. There's also a picnic area right there, with lots of big barbecues (see photos). Walk around the building with the showers/restrooms and you will find a more secluded picnic area. Everywhere are big shade trees. There's a lifeguard/attendant at the pool. Hours for swimming are Monday though Sunday, 11am to 3pm. From the posted sign, I assume you don't have to be an ES resident, and can just pay a $3 non-resident pool fee. Hilltop Park is almost directly under the El Segundo water tower! Just lock your eyes onto that and drive toward it, can't miss it, haha! 10 photos

Very cute park. Small, clean, ample parking. Has a play area for 2-5 year olds and 5-12 year olds along with 4 picnic tables and a cool swing set. Perfect for an outing with multiple kids because they would be hard to lose here :)

There is an entrance to a nice public parking lot on Maryland. From the parking lot there is a ramp that leads right down into the park. We opt to park there because the street signs are confusing. There isn't much to the park, a large slide, something to climb on and a few swings all in the sand and in the sun. But the little pool is great. The people there seemed really friendly. There are a few benches inside and outside the fence. Lots of open grassy area outside the fence where you can put a blanket down and watch your kids play. They seem fine if you sit outside the fence, you don't have to be right on top of your kid. That said, I'm sure it depends on age. There are always 2 lifeguards on duty. I posted a picture of what you can and cannot bring (basically you cannot use any type of floaties or inner-tubes) You can have noodles, dive rings/sticks, toys and squirt guns, according to the sign. With that said...the day we were there we brought a small kick-board and the lifeguard did not say anything. Later, they took away kick-boards and squirt guns. We went again another day and the kids were allowed to have small squirt guns (you can't bring the big super-soaker type guns) The problem is that they leave it up to the lifeguards discretion. I would rather they just make it a rule so we know what to pack. But you can't go wrong with noodles and small water toys, which is a lot more than you get at most places where you can't have anything! Every now and then there is a camp there and it can get a bit crowded. We have been lucky so far and it has never been over-crowded. (Pool hours: 11a-3p) $5 Non-Residents *Review updated 6/23/15 - updated since price had gone up this summer.

Whether it be hitting dingers in my Little…read moreLeague Baseball League, playing pick up basketball as a kid against grown men, taking tennis lessons (I was trash at tennis), or running around here in middle school with my group of friends, Live Oak has been instrumental in my growth as a man. Most recently, it's been here for me when I come back from NYC and just want to get some shots up alone. Nothing as cathartic as grabbing the new basketball my Granny just got me, popping my airpods in, and doing the basketball workouts I used to do as a kid when hoop dreams were all I cared about. Something about reconnecting with that part of myself just eases the stresses that come with adulthood. I think that chubby insecure kid would be proud of who I am today, and that makes me smile. It's good to look back at your past and appreciate who you've become... But don't stare at it, or you'll end up staying there. Look back, smile, and keep pushing forward. I also randomly seen Kendrick Lamar doing a prison workout here a few years back. That was a trip lol. THANK YOU LIVE OAK! THANK YOU GRANNY I LOVE THIS NEW BASKETBALL! IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov_reviews
