Mario Mario Mario! I've met him 3x now. Awesome barista and very kind! That breakfast burrito!!!! Good gawd! Now the vibe in here reminds me of DC lol people working or meeting each other for the first time just being here so the ambiance fosters those interactions. Great music and great art too!

Stopped in just to grab a latte and added vanilla syrup. Unfortunately, it was way too sweet for me. I'm not sure how many pumps of syrup they used, but next time I'll definitely ask for just one light pump. I didn't order any food this time, but the menu looked pretty solid. Since I just moved to the neighborhood, I'm sure I'll be back to try some of the food. Parking tip: If you don't see any available street parking, there's actually a parking lot in the back, which is good to know!

My first impression...amazing! You have to get the matcha with the pistachio milk! The food look delicious but didn't get the chance to try it yet. So you know what that means...I'll be coming back for sure ;) This place is also the perfect spot to hangout, do work and enjoy the cool plants and artwork.

Welcome to this tourist trap, I mean coffee shop. I stopped by to support and get a cup of joe... didn't know I was bout to be assaulted by come coffee beans. 5.50 for a drip is a straight jack move! Support the message but not at this crazy ass pricing, only thing premium is the cost... but the roast is mid, thanks but not again...

Good coffee and energy with plenty of seating. Only issue was waiting 25 minutes for 2 lattes when we were third in line. Noticed 2 groups that came in after us got their coffee orders before we did.

This place was such a great find! A friend from the Bay recommended it when I was visiting LA, and it did not disappoint. The iced coffees were smooth and refreshing, and the food was delicious. The bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich on a buttery toasted bun was hearty and flavorful. The BLT with avocado on crispy grilled bread was fresh and satisfying. We also got the powdered sugar beignets with dipping sauces, which were warm, soft, and the perfect sweet finish. The space is casual and relaxed, a great spot for brunch with a friend.

I met up with a friend at this spacious coffee shop. The coffee was strong and flavorful; I enjoyed it. Prices seemed average for an LA coffee shop but it's definitely more reasonable than say...lalaland. Better imo too. Ordered beignets with jam and they make it fresh so you'll need to wait a few minutes especially if the line is long. Service was pretty good, friendly. Ample free parking in the lot behind this strip mall. I'll be back! Last pic is the bowl my friend ordered. Had a bite and it tasted fresh and tasty!

This cafe was absolutely adorable, and I have heard so much about it from friends who frequent there. I came after a morning run to get a coffee with a friend, and was pleasantly surprised at their extensive menu! They have much more the just beverages and pastries like I assumed. They have hot food options, and I think I even saw shrimp and grits on the menu or something with shrimp! Nice! I got the sweet potato latte, hot. It was pretty delicious, but my only gripe is that I got the smallest possible size and it was over $8. Not going to lie, that felt a bit steep. Not sure if that's the norm with coffee spots now, as I usually make mine at home, but for the tiny size of my cup, over $8 felt excessive. Major kudos for good service because my friend didn't enjoy her latte cold, and they swapped it out for a hot one (even though she was ok paying for another item). I still would likely return and try a food item. We shal see.

Really good place to work. I also loved my Matchata (matcha + horchata). Baristas were kind and was able to post up at a nice wooden table. Enjoyed spending time there

This place is as great as Issa Rae's career. It's amazing that she's fused it into this spot amongst others. Had the grits and shrimp with collard greens and an egg over easy. Also feasted on the beignets, the cornbread, and the highly recommended Issa's morning smoothie. The place was full of heart and soul and the smart said about the food, service, and ambiance. Thank you Hilltop Coffee and Kitchen!

Matcha Lemonade & Caramel and Hazelnut Iced Latte
Teira R.

My god daughter and I absolutely enjoyed our visit here. We ordered the Matcha lemonade and a Caramel Hazelnut Iced Latte. The service was fast and the ambience of the shop was welcoming and cozy. It made for a great place to relax or get some work done. We did some work on our laptop and chatted for a bit. The Matcha lemonade was super delicious, I've found a new obsession.

To-go: iced mocha, matchachata, & breakfast sandwich

I'm team matchachata for life! This is SO LA in all the best ways. A black-woman-owned business, weaving together a Mexican drink & a Japanese drink to make a magical potion! The breakfast sandwich & iced mocha were also tasty. The vibe is cute tiny cafe, with a few solo tables & a couple big communal tables. The servers are friendly & efficient.

The açaí bowl is thick, fresh, and tastes like dessert in disguise -- perfect fruit, perfect crunch. And the avocado breakfast sandwich? Creamy, seasoned, and actually satisfying. No bland vibes whatsoever. Short version: it's delicious, it's consistent, and I'd 100% go back tomorrow.

Ask the Community - Hilltop

Do you accept Apple Pay?

Yes

Are you able to sit down and work in the cafe, or is it take out only?

You can sit down

I saw a photo that suggests you roast and sell whole coffee beans. Where can I read the descriptions and consider ordering? thanks!

Has this location been closed down permanently?

I was told the Slauson location was closed for Renovation but will be open soon

Are there any gluten free options? I would love to frequent here as it's in my neighborhood but it's too frustrating to not have options other than salad.

I see several in the breakfast and bowl options, plus salads. I don't see any GF bread offered on the sandwiches or droptops but i think there are plenty of things to try beyond that.

Are the beignets the thick heavy ones or more light & airy?

They were more light and airy, though to me they were a little on the tough side.

Is the establishment dog friendly?

yes and no. its a very small shop, so bringing in a dog would not be recommended at all. However there is small seating area right outside of the shop that is just fine for a calm dog.…

On the hunt for different flavored matcha lattes and heard about the guava matcha so had to try it first myself. The guava fruit is not so sweet to begin with so didn't expect a sweet matcha tea. But overall felt underwhelming with not much flavor to it. The matcha itself was decent but nothing special. Also threw in a vegan croissant (yes you heard correctly). A little bit more on the drier side compared to the regular croissant but pretty good. Overall gave a 3.5 out of 5. More of a reflection tif the guava matcha but it could just be my personal preference I'm terms of the type of fruity flavor. The staff was Avery friendly and the service was otherwise fast and awesome. Plenty of space to do some work if you're looking for a place to chill. Wouldn't mind stopping by again to try other drinks in the menu.

I'm in love with their local artworks and trinkets for sale. The patio is pretty too. Thanks to the tent shades it's so nice to hang out there even in hot LA weather. I have only tried the cold brew and I gotta say theirs is a very nice blend of earthy coffee and a hint of fruity. I thought it was like blueberries but the server said it had a banana taste. After she said that, the hint of banana is all I can taste. Not complaining! I get the Canadian Bacon panini croissant. It's flakey and the havarti cheese contrasts the Canadian bacon so well. And that sauce. What's that sauce!? The servers are always friendly and chill. I just wish they don't run out of their secret sauce a lot. I really look forward to passing by the shop and having my breakfast before I start my field work. I can't wait to try the hot drinks in the winter. I already have a few lattes in mind ;) PS - if you'll stay a while to work (they got WiFi) might as well find a good parking spot across Jefferson. The cul-de-sac can fill up pretty quickly. The drinks tasted great! I had the maple walnut latte upon the recommendation of the super sweet and cute male barista. Later, I ordered the almond croissant and the Hojicha Latte. Incredibly tasty! The drinks didn't get overpowered by the sweetness, and the Hojicha Latte had a chocolate like earthiness that I adore (a lil' on the subtle side for hojicha, but I still loved it). When they completed my drinks, one of the sweetest baristas sang the Beatles' Michelle to let me know. She (beautiful as well, inside and out) made my day! Perhaps my month, lol! I highly recommend this place for the quality food, exceptional service and amazing vibe that welcomes all people. As for the parking? Park on Sycamore, the side street west of Sycamore, take the Metro Expo Line (I don't know the cot damn letter, I'm old school, lol) or ride the bus lines (212, 35/38) to get there. It's not that bad if you are willing to walk. I'm glad South LA finally re-attracts non-pretentious neighborhood gems like House Coffee Co. Better late than never in my eyes.
