Ray and his team at Hillside are great. I am the owner of DECO Electric and I use Hillside to do stucco patch every time I do a panel upgrade or have to cut open the exterior of a house. The last job Hillside did for me was particularly challenging because the panel door was hitting an exterior column and the inspector wouldn't sign off. Hillside came out and shaved the column down and patched the stucco; when they were done you couldn't even tell that any work was done. These guys do really good work which is why I call them for all my jobs. Highly recommend you use them if you want your stucco job to come out right. read more

Obviously these other reviews on yelp are from Ray's family and friends because this company had to be one of the worst experience with a subcontractor in my 15 years as a construction manager. They front load the values of their contracts so that all the profit + markup is at the beginning and once the 1st check clears they pull off the project because they already made all the profit. Their next step is stating they are over-booked and can't accommodate your schedule for several months and that you (owner/contractor) should look for another subcontractor to finish their work. If you don't agree to hiring another subcontractor, he holds you hostage by forcing you to sign another contract with demands all in his favor otherwise he can't get to your job for several months. Clearly, I didn't sign this revised contract language seen below but the following are the changes he made for your reference to see the type of business that is being run. 1. They increased the base contract value by $700 with no given reason. All the previous change order requests that he asked for were already paid. 2. "Owners, builders and anyone associated with owner or builder agrees to pay $5000.00 for placing any reviews the internet/social media or any other outlet for defamation." The only reason a company would put this in a contract is that they are treating customers unfairly and providing an inferior product and bad service. 3. They wanted me to waive all my rights for delay costs. Ray was more than happy to cost me thousands in delay costs without any way to recoup the costs. 4. "Hillside Plastering will not tolerate harassment, bullying or stress caused by anyone in connection with the above addresses. If any of the above occurs, additional damages will be paid by the above party with the minimum amount of $2000.00 up to $10,000". This was a crazy clause Ray put into the new contract because he didn't want to be bugged about getting his work completed or hear about the damages he left behind. I would argue that he caused me more stress and this should read the other way around. I've never been bullied by a subcontractor for payment as much as they did. In addition, he created stress by being non-responsive and holding me hostage with a new contract terms and demands. None of new terms were morally fair and are one-sided in your favor of Hillside giving me NO protection. 5. Wanted 100% payment in full prior to any work being performed. This was an absurd term of the contract as it didn't give me any leverage for quality control or ensuring the work got completed. 6. "Hillside Plastering has the right to cancel contract & refuse work at any time before or during job in progress." This company will want the ability to leave the project at any time screwing the customer over without any reproductions. List of issues on my project to watch out for if you dare to hire this firm. 1. Change Orders: from the first day on the project Ray started complaining how messed up all the other subcontractor where and that he needed extra money to finish his contract work. 2. Damaged to property: he doesn't even respond or have the honor to recognize that his employees' damages to finishes. I sent 4 emails about damages caused by his employees and never got one response. I now have to hire a painter to fill the staple holes with wood filler, sand, re-prime and repaint for $1,500 two large exposed wooden beam/posts. 3. Schedule: kiss your schedule good bye. It took a full month to paper wrap and lath the project from start to passing of inspection. Not to mention the 2-1/2 month delay that would have occurred if I didn't hire someone to finish his work. 4. Failure to finish work: I personally had to spend my weekend finish up the paper wrap because his guys refused to get on a ladder at one location where scaffolding wasn't provided even though all other project subcontractors worked from a ladder. The fun part is that Ray walked the project before he took the job and knew the jobsite conditions and what was being provided by the owner. 5. Change of Contract Terms: he adds demands via text message and sends over revised contract language every time he is unhappy with something. 6. No cleanup: I had to hire several day laborers to come and cleanup the jobsite. His crews don't clean up after themselves and expect other to do it for them. 7. Faulty work: A) They kept the paper wrap exposed for more than 45 days, beyond the manufactures recommendations and had all the intentions of keeping it exposed for another 2 months. He would have ended up back charging me for the removal and reinstallation of the paper & lath when the inspector rejected the paper. B) After walking with my new subcontractor I had to hire I was told that the paper wrap was littered with holes that needed caulking and the quality/workmanship left behind was subpair and unprofessional. Avoid going to court and don't hire this subcontractor. read more

Hillside Plastering just completed the replacement of approximately 50 feet of deteriorated weep screed on our home. The project was completed in two days, the first day consisted of removal of existing stucco, and removal and replacement of weep screed and associated paper and wire screening. Under drizzly, wet weather conditions, that work was completed competently and expeditiously. Today, they returned to finish the job, with the scratch and brown coats, followed by expertly applying the finish coat to match the existing texture and color as closely as possible. Our project required the trimming and in one case removal of adjacent plantings, and temporary adjustment of the placement of two air conditioning units to provide room to work under tight conditions. Following completion, the area was cleaned up nicely. Ray Smith and his small crew did everything needed to do a professional and expert project at a cost in time and money that was fair and much appreciated. We have more work to do unrelated to weep screeds, and will definitely call Hillside Plastering to perform that work as well. Highly recommended! read more

We needed some repair work to our stucco on the exterior of our house due to a plumbing leak in the wall (homeownership is so much fun!) We found Hillside Plastering and reached out. Dealing with Hillside is exactly how I would like to work with all contractors/tradesmen for these types of jobs: I sent a text message with a photo of the repair work needed along with a short description and then I received a text back with a price quote. It was competitive so we agreed (also via text) to have them do the work. We arranged for a date/time, they showed up as planned, were very professional, cleaned things up nicely and provided an EXCELLENT match with the surrounding (existing) stucco. Ray and his team at Hillside Plastering Inc. did an outstanding job on our stucco repair. We had areas around our house where sprinklers had caused some damage to the weep screed. Ray came to our house, gave us an estimate, and was completely honest about what areas needed replacing and what areas could wait. He and his team worked extremely hard and their diligence shows in the finished product. The new texture matches our 22 year old stucco perfectly and the color coat is spot on.
