Texture felt old and taste was not really like shawarma you'd get at a solid donair place. The place is modern and clean, with a very brightly designed space -- lots of white with light wood and brass accents -- and the service, in typical YYJ style, was eager and helpful and generally nice. 10/10 would recommend to a friend. Clearly the label was cut off, so I don't know if they misheard my sweetness level, or if 30% was truly that sugar bomb I drank. They did technically get my drink name wrong as well, though lemon should've made my drink more sour, not sweet. I couldn't taste any tea flavor at all--not sure if I buy the whole "fresh fruit juice used" on their website, because I've had grapefruit juice before, and it should not taste artificial fruit syrup sweetner. The pearls themselves were on the soft side, but I didn't have too many qualms with that. I have had Truedan in San Francisco and have only had good drinks with them, so I figured that given that they're a chain, they would be consistent, but this visit was unfortunately disappointing. I'm from out of town and have been visiting in Oak Bay for the month of February. This has been my favorite find in the neighborhood. The indoor seating is minimal but comfortable in the winter time. I would love to sit outside with the plants they sell, when the weather is better. The food, whether savory or sweet, is imaginative and expertly executed. You have your basic cookies and scones and muffins, as well as more substantial fare. The coffee is wonderful. You can buy a bag of granola to take away, which will get your day off to a good start even when you can't go to the café in person. Lots of other foods - cheeses, soups, and so on - to take away. The staff is charming and proficient, which tells me that the one doing the hiring knows what they are doing. No place can be all things to all people. But in my experience, everything these folks do, they do really well. I could, of course, blame them for the current friction between Alberta and British Columbia. But I really don't think it's their fault.
