Tried out Hillman Beer, while perusing different breweries in the Asheville area. Hillman is a nice little spot that offers a good selection of parking and a mix of beer and food options. The location was busy and staff was nice. The interior was furnished with a lot of high top tables to accompany different sized groups. Our first time here was their 9 year anniversary party. I had perused their website prior and was disappointed that the two beers I'd selected -- a wit and a Hefeweizen -- were not on tap. Instead I selected the Strawboobies Saison. Music was playing and we were lucky enough to grab a small table for two where we could hear the music but were out of the sun. For my next beer I had the Currant Mistake which I liked better than the Saison. Husband enjoyed his two beers as well. Lastly, we both ordered the pork bowl which had a lot of flavor and was a good portion size. Bartenders were friendly and attentive -- you order and pay at the bar. The only negative thing I have to say about this place is that it is in Asheville and I am not. This is a new favorite brewery for me! It was full of fun vibes. I liked the flight I bought, and ended up taking a four-pack of Old Fort Original home with me. But I don't remember anytime when I was more disappointed by a Reuben sandwich than I was here. When it came out, the sandwich was beautiful (and the fries were really good!). I bit into one half, and the bread was perfectly toasted and buttery. There was plenty of cornbeef and swiss. It should have been amazing. But their "special" sauce was almost sour - I expected a version of Russian dressing, but instead it was very unpleasant. I ate half of the sandwich because there wasn't a lot of dressing and everything else about it was done so well, but I finally had to give up on it. That sauce ruined the sandwich; I have no idea why they would use something so bad tasting. I honestly would have rated this place two stars or even one star if I hadn't had their beer. If I ever return, it will be for a beer or two, but definitely not for the food. read more

I never generally leave review, but I visited this brewery at around 8:30pm on a Saturday evening with a group of 7 people. There were maybe 10 people total in the brewery when we arrived. Within 40 minutes, the one bartender working asked our group to please be quite. We were playing a game with the coasters and having a good time laughing...nothing out of the ordinary for a party of 7 at a brewery on a Saturday night. So, don't go here unless you are looking for a quite atmosphere, they have NO patience for any groups who are the least bit loud or having a good time. Will absolutely never return. read more

Met a co worker for lunch. We were greeted by a very bubbly person , Emily who made us feel so welcome. She was a very attentive and made sure we were not rushed. It was sunny but very windy so we sat inside. You order at the bar and they will bring your food out to you. Hillman is a nice neighborhood bar on the outskirts of Biltmore Village and just far enough away from the main gate of the Biltmore Estate to keep most tourists away. There is lots of outdoor seating (and indoor) and one of the most dog-friendly breweries in the area. We usually go for beers but the food menu is also good. Tonight, we had the smash burger and fries, and the kale salad with fried chicken. Both were good and filling. We also enjoyed the Thursday night beer special (Saison), the Oktoberfest and my favorite, Mama Bear. Bar service can be a bit slow if there's a crowd as there was on this night and we didn't realize until a bit later that it was trivia night. Kudos to the staff for walking around with a handheld device to replenish food and drink and close out tabs. read more

I don't think I have ever regretted spending my money on food more instantly. Every item we ordered was several dollars more expensive than the menu we had been given. 20 dollars for 10 wings, 12 dollars for seven chicken nuggets for a kids meal and they charge extra for Bar B Que sauce for example. Then there are the flies, not just one or two but at any instance there were over a dozen flies dive bombing our food and drink. Bottom line, there are so many places in Asheville that offer better food for cheaper and without the risk of insect borne disease. Old Fort got hit hard but these guys are back in business. If you're are headed to Asheville or Any of the area that is Western NC stop in to Old Fort and enjoy a beer and sit along the water. The staff was friendly and the service was quick. Liked the brewpub ambience. Unfortunately the food didn't live up to the hype. Both of us ordered different burgers along with the house chips. The chips were hit or miss with many of them small and stale. My BBQ burger had a token amount of the BBQ sauce that turned out to be tasteless. The patties themselves were thin and square; quite reminiscent of a Bubba Burger and not much better. If this is the best burger in town, then Asheville is a hurtin' pup. Fortunately for every mid, mid, mid Hillman there is also a Vinnie's, which Yelp guided me to last night. read more

It was a thin grey patty with way too much bun, smothered in ketchup and gross yellow mustard. And to my surprise when I cashed out, the fries were $5 extra, so that's a $19 plate of disappointment. Come for the beer, stay for the incredible food and heartwarming service! We checked out a LOT of breweries in Asheville this past weekend and Hillman is a front-runner for the favorite spot. They offer plenty of on-site parking and there is more space available just across the street. It is one of the few breweries in Asheville that you won't have to pay for close parking! There is plenty of outdoor picnic bench seating and the large garage doors on the brewery were wide open from front to back making the whole place inviting to 2-legged and 4-legged visitors. It sits right on the creek and that offers some nice, relaxing views while you enjoy a brew! We opted to order food before drinks and I had a tough time deciding. We chose the House Salad bowl with tempeh and Rice Bowl with falafel. Both were HUGE portions, with fresh and super flavorful ingredients. There was staff constantly delivering food to tables and everything looked amazing - especially the burgers. Their beer options also had me salivating. They have something for every taste, including wine. I selected a flight and wasn't disappointed. We were most impressed that the staff was constantly interacting with patrons and asking how they could be of service. Southern hospitality at its finest. We will surely return! read more
