I've loved Hilligoss Bakery now for...gee whiz, I'm scared to say it... can it be 34 years? Have they been around THAT long? I know the actual building has changed, but... Oh well, does it matter? I blame my own mother for putting me on my first narcotic sugar high one day after walking to her office in downtown Brownsburg after having taken my drivers ed class during the summer of 1979. On her desk when I walked in was a bag of 2 vanilla cream filled donuts from Hilligoss -- not the custard filling, but that light, white sugar filling. Makes my mouth water just remembering it. I scarfed both of them down literally under 60 seconds, and at that time I became forever hooked on them. Time passes, you grow up, move away, find other things to obsess about. But I've never lost my love for those donuts. And as of this writing, Hilligoss is the only bakery in the country that I know of that still makes them; the same way they did way back when I first had them that sunny afternoon after learning how to parallel park. And every time I come back to Brownsburg I make it a point to get my hands on them, either from my still-complicit mom or at my own hand. Everything I've ever had at this bakery has been good, very good. If I could order Hilligoss donuts over the internet and have them delivered to me in Washington, DC, I'd do so. I'd attempt a Fedex delivery, but I doubt they'd make it intact -- no self-respecting delivery man would ever let them off the truck uneaten. read more

The donuts and cookies are awesome! However, if you don't get here until noon there's a good chance there won't be any donuts left. I came in at 12:30 and there were 8 left: 2 with Easter sprinkles and 6 jelly filled. So, I bought some cookies (chocolate chip and Easter egg) and one donut. All were very tasty and fresh. If you're on the west side, go to Brownsburg for your sweet fried dough "needs"!! read more

I got up this morning in need of some donuts so I jumped on Yelp and found this place. Very cute and easy to spot from Main Street I was excited when I pulled up. It wasn't crazy crowded for a Sunday morning, which I appreciated and the workers were very friendly and helped me choose which donuts to get. I got a regular yeast donut and a cinnamon caramel donut. They weren't bad, but they were a little dry. Almost as if they were yesterday's donuts that weren't sold so they were put back out for today. I just would have liked them to be a little more moist. The texture was the soft homemade taste that you find at good bakeries, unlike cake-type donuts you get at Dunkin. I'm sure I'll go back because I prefer to support local when possible, and it's the closest actual donut shop, that isn't a chain, to me in Avon. read more

My fault for arriving a bit late at 10am, so the selection was slim. The cinnamon twists were delicious and so soft. I also had some sort of peanut butter roll which was good. (Don't judge I'm eating for two...okay go ahead and judge) Overall the experience was good, but it seemed to be missing some sort of magic that both Long's and Titus's possess. Hilligoss bakery has been a local donut shop for as long as I can remember. Going there after church on Sunday morning or early on Saturday mornings was something I will always cherish. They have a donut that is fabulous called the peanut butter Susana. It come plain or covered in chocolate. It has been a favorite of mine since childhood and they still make them in small batches just like they always have. I'm not sure why the batches are small but if you want one you need to get there early! My parents favorite was always what my father called the alligator. It's basically a long danish that is about four servings. He always likes the one with pecans and Carmel icing. The selection is typical of a donut shop and the size of the donuts have diminished a tad from days gone by but..... everyone needs to make a buck to compete with Wally World. The yeast will not disappoint and are always a household favorite here. Cash only, is the downer to this locally owned business but it's a small inconvenience to pay for delicious dough delightfulness! The credit card companies charge an arm and a leg for each transaction on top of a monthly fee so I'm sure you can find the time to hit the atm first! read more

Cash only and worth every penny. If Hilligoss was located next door to Long's, I'd be perplexed trying to figure out who was better... Tried a jelly, a Boston cream, and a cheese danish. The donuts beat the danish hands down. As a matter of fact, our donuts were 6am fresh - and it was noon. As donut-lovers, we were genuinely surprised. These filled donuts have a more compact size and not flat on top like some places. The jelly donuts remind me of high quality Polish paczki (punch key). Hilligoss are jelly-filled perfection. I myself would rather pay cash anyway. My guess is they would have to pay a fee for every transaction when paying with a card. It may be inconvenient but that's the way it is. I've never been to this establishment since I live in Noblesville. But maybe when I go down to see my step dad in Danville, he and I will have to make a trip there. read more

Young lady was curt and nearly rude. My pastries were average in taste. Had as good or better from grocery store. This is my favorite donut shop in the Indy area. Go early to get yeast donuts while the donuts are still warm and it will melt in your mouth. Just remember to bring cash--they do not accept cards. I saw a posting of this bakery on YelpIndy's Instagram. Despite frequent visits to Brownsburg, I had never heard of it, but wanted to give it a try. I visited this bakery Sunday morning shortly after 9. I think my experience would've been better if I had went as soon as I woke up at 7:30. The display counter wasn't packed full of options. I heard another customer make a request and they informed him his item was all gone. Unfamiliar with this bakery, I had no idea the name or types of treats in front of me. I selected 3 items that looked good after asking what they were. I ended up with a cake doughnut, a maple pecan pastry, and a twist. Those items along with a bottle of chocolate milk cost less than $5. The pastry and doughnut were ok, but I could've done without the twist. The service was average. I did tell the lady that waited on me that it was my first time there, but she didn't offer any suggestions. Needless to say, I won't be making any special trips to this bakery. However, I might give them another try if I can get there earlier. I still prefer Long's. read more

Best donuts around, hands down! I'll put up with the "frowny faces" as long as they give me my donuts. HA! But seriously, they have a good quality product here from their standard yeast donuts (which is the best!), to their pecan pastries, to cookies, and fritters. They're all fresh and taste decadent. Prices are comparable as well, except they only accept cash or check which is a little dated in my opinion. They'd certainly do even better business if they'd accept cards like 98% of the other businesses around them do. But you better bet when I have cash I hit up Hilligoss. Yes, the ladies that work the counter could be friendlier, I agree. However, it's often quite busy and I think they're just concentrating on getting their customers in and out as quickly as they can. I've been in at times when I've felt they were short with me, but I've also been in later in the morning and I've received a smile, which made my day. Regardless, they're doing their job efficiently, taking money and giving their product to customers. No smiles are necessarily needed. read more

I literally woke my ass up this morning to get 4 glazed doughnuts. Here I am thinking they were going to be fresh, but they were cold as stone. I am highly irritated because I drove in the fog, all the way from Indianapolis. As someone who went to brownsburg highschool a few years ago and loved this bakery, I am highly disappointed. The quality of these doughnuts has gone down in the past few years. At least for the glazed they use to be a lot bigger, now they've damn near went down to snack size. I really don't even care about the size, I just wanted them to be hot, yet they were not. There's a middle aged brunette, who looks at everyone in disgust when they come in. She looks like she woke up on the wrong side of the bed... or just didn't want to get up and I find it completely hilarious. She literally gets an E for effort on customer service. After all, I was trying to AVOID going to Longs on 16th St, aka the hood because so much shit happens over there. Now I see risking my life on 16th st, will be worth it because at least I'll get fresh doughnuts:) read more

Pastries were good. Service was horrible. What an impression for my first visit to Hilligoss! The blonde woman behind the counter was chatting happily with customers inside the store. As soon as I walked in she stopped talking and looked annoyed at me. Then proceeded to be rude as I asked questions about what was in the case. If you don't want to answer questions about what is available, label everything. She never said thank you, never greeted me and, even as I thanked HER as I left, she looked at me sideways and said nothing. Customer service is more important than what you have to eat. read more

I ordered a large coffee, called the Highlander Grog (which was awesome!) and a glazed donut. Both were great, and I would love to come some time in the morning when the donuts are fresh! read more

My husband wanted a maple donut & they didn't have any made so they literally went to the back and made him one! The service is wonderful. If you get one thing, get the cinnamon roll.. To die for! Hilligoss donuts are such a treat. I can't think of any other donuts that are exactly like them. The dough has a great taste and consistency, with the perfect amount of glaze. I love to look at a good over the top extravagant donut as much as the next guy and realize these 'gourmet' places have to stand out from each other.
