We walk in to a feeling of an historic building or business with a huge antique doorway and oversized windows. The business itself is pretty hopping with handmade pizzas and dessert pies. We had heard the pies here were great so we wanted to find out. I had a slice of the pecan pie. It was incredibly fresh, made this morning. Even the pecans were fresh, you can tell because they still had that snap to them, not soft with age. The serving size was also very generous. Yea this pie is definitely worth the stop. The Mrs had the same experience with the Marion berry pie. We went for dessert pie, but everything that came out of the kitchen looked great- the pizza, the salads- oh, I was jealous. The busboy was amazing- hardworking, focused, on top of everything- cleaning up right after guests leave. Really impressed. The lady behind the counter was friendly and helpful. The dessert pies were baked that day. The pecan and Marionberry were exquisite- from crust to filling- fantastic! There are many wooden tables and chairs including window counter and stools. Fantastic bottom of hill pizza goodness!!! Get in early, and enjoy a delicious pizza!!! Bubbly crust, with the perfect amount of browned bits, quality ingredients and just deliciousness. Also split the house salad and the dressing was so fresh and loved the pickled red peppers with the cucumbers, and fresh greens. I haven't had a pizza this good since NY three weeks ago. Now I mention NY, and although I also love the NY "fold it" crust, I personally prefer a bit sturdier crust BUT still with that chewy texture plus the bubbly brown crust. It was so delicious!!! Highly recommend!!! Also got a piece of berry pie to go, also amazing!! It's a small place with lots of locals coming in for pick up, so plan accordingly. Also have seen comments about the Asian woman who runs the counter...I assume she owns the place....she was lovely!!! I only wish that I would have taken a photo of the cook who was helping take pizzas out to patrons, both inside and outside. He left a flour footprint trail as he helped. The owner was HORRIBLE to us. We came in at 6:50 PM on a Friday night and she was beyond rude to us. Told us we could only order to go because they were closing at 7:30, which would have been fine, except she was extremely rude. I watched as my husband was treated like crap, only to realize later we would only be staying long enough to get the order to go. We sat there waiting for our order until 7:15 pm. The people who ordered behind us were not told the same thing and we watched them enjoy their meal before us. My husband is the nicest guy you could ever meet. I am so baffled and angry by how he was treated. Only go here if you want to be treated like crap and that you are less than human. The owner is beyond rude. I grew up in the restaurant business, never in a million years would we have treated someone the way we were treated. It was so shocking as there was no reason to be so rude to us. We walked in, one of sat down to hold a table while the other walked up to place an order. This is the 4th time we have been here and it has been a place where we were happy to bring friends. We hadn't planned on dinner in PT but the weather was so nice, we delayed our departure. Where to eat knowing it was Saturday night and no reservation. Yelp pointed us to Hillbottom. The place was full but there was 2 person table that could squeeze the 3 of us. A very nice couple swapped their table for a seat at the counter and we added a chair. Then it went downhill. The waitress came by and snarled "move your chair! I need room to work!!". There wasn't a hospitable tone from her. The table next said they were waiting an hour for their pizza and had a similar interaction. Add those 2 things and we left to go elsewhere. We rolled into Port Townsend STARVING and happened to find a spot right outside Hillbottom Pie. My dining compatriots - a vegetarian teenager and 10 year with an expanding palate - were happy with the promises of pizza and soup that were prominently advertised on Hillbottom's windows. I was very hesitant to eat there once we entered because it didn't have 1) the aesthetic for our vacation vibes or 2) any tables available 3) a rather cantankerous woman telling people in line she couldn't hear to take orders (people seemed to be having pleasant conversation, as one does as they wait to order lunch with friends - I didnt see the issue, but maybe there was an underlying issue - in which case a sign or heads up would have been more pleasant than her frustration). The lady in line behind me assured me that this place was fantastic, she takes a ferry from Whidbey weekly specifically to eat here, and insisted we try the marionberry pie. As we were starving and there seemed to be selections to meet everyone's palate, we heeded the other customer's advice and stayed to Order. This is what we got: Green Salad - HUGE, fresh salad with a delightfully light vinaigrette; we easily split the salad three ways and my kids are pretty picky with their greens; both of them eating the salad bodes very well for the quality and preparation of the salad. margarita pizza: solid pizza, nothing spectacular, but good Bowl of clam chowder - large bowl served with two pieces of sourdough. Good clam chowder. Not too heavy, not a ton of clams though. Cup of lentil soup: also served with two pieces of sourdough (to the delight of the table); this was a vegetarian, maybe vegan lentil soup and really good. Perfectly spiced, with maybe a drizzle of olive oil on top? For sure the standout dish Marriorberry pie: super underwhelming, but in all honesty, we are not pie people. Tasted like jam on a crust. I've spent some time in the south and Midwest and have heard people wax eloquent about pie crust. Don't think this one inspired poetry, but it also wasn't offensive. Overall, a nice lunch that erred on the lighter side - always a good find on vacation. Other than the slice of pie, I found the prices to be very reasonable, especially for the quantity and quality of the food. We finally hit Port Townsend when HIllbottom Pie wasn't closed. They were only doing To Go orders, we had a Caesar Salad and a cup of the New England Clam Chowder, and again, we were not let down. The Prices were great on both menu items as well, especially for a tourist town. The salad was large, they did not skimp at all. The Chowder was really good, not the best I've had but it was up there. Now, what was the best I've had was the Margherita Pizza we back and ordered for dinner, a home run for sure. It has been years since we have enjoyed Hillbottom's pizza, and again we were super impressed, I had to stop myself at two pieces, which was difficult, but I wanted leftovers. It's the best pizza you'll ever have! I love the burnt edge of the crust which is very crunchy and flavorful. My personal favorite is the white pie plus mushrooms. On 5/21/22, I visited Hillbottom Pie. It's a favorite of the locals and one of the few restaurants that maintained a steady stream of business during the pandemic. Hillbottom Pie is known for their pizza, Caesar salad's, homemade soups, and pie. They are currently doing takeout only. I ordered a cup of Clam Chowder, which came with a perfectly toasted slice of homemade buttered bread. The chowder was very good. It was chock-full of chunks of goodness.I also got a slice of homemade Marionberry pie. The filling was pretty good, but the crust was too thick and not flaky enough for my preference. I liked the ratio of filling to crust. Neither the chowder, nor the pie were the best versions of these dishes that I've ever had, but both were very good. I think anyone ordering either of these would be very happy. Because I love homemade soup so much, I got a cup of their Cock-a-Leekie and Asparagus soup to go. I tried the Cock-a-Leekie. It was excellent. I didn't get to try the Asparagus before heading back home. I left all of it for Dad. Haven't heard what he thinks of it yet, but there is no doubt in my mind that it too is excellent. I will definitely be revisiting this restaurant. Next time I'm in town, I plan on getting one of each of the four soups, Caesar salad, pizza and pie. The only negative, and it comes up consistently in reviews, is that the female co-owner of the business is not very friendly. It's a little like that Seinfeld episode "The Soup Nazi." A strengths-based way to describe her behavior is brusk and efficient. Don't go here for the service, go here for the food. Trust me, you'll be happy you did. * My 4-star review is based solely on the food. I'm not going to ding the business based on the service. Delicious pizza and pie! There were already a few people in line ahead of me prior to opening of the restaurant. Seems like a local favorite pizza place. Many people recommended getting their Caesar salad as the local favorite. As of September 2022, they are still take-out only. The dough was definitely my favorite part- just the right amount of fire. This little pizza place was very quaint and had an authentic feel to it. The four of us got right in on a Saturday afternoon in November. Our server was pleasant and attentive.
