I'm giving this restaurant 1-2 stars, and the only reason I'm giving it any stars at all is because the food is genuinely delicious. As a Peruvian myself, I'm a huge fan of Peruvian cuisine, and I want to be transparent that the food here is one of the reasons I've continued coming back. Unfortunately, my experiences with the service have been consistently disappointing. The few times I've visited, I've felt that I was treated with unnecessary attitude or passive aggression, and sometimes it simply wasn't warranted. Yesterday was unfortunately the last straw for me. I was celebrating with my family because I had recently been accepted into the program I had really hoped to get into, so this was supposed to be a special meal for us. My parents can admittedly be a little slow when it comes to understanding menus, but they were simply trying to figure out what to order. While I was calmly explaining the menu to my dad, the older male server abruptly interrupted and aggressively said in Spanish, "¿Y A QUIÉN LE HAGO CASO?" ("And who am I supposed to listen to?"). I understand that working in customer service can be frustrating, and I'm not expecting servers to be perfect or endlessly patient. However, there is a respectful way to communicate with customers, especially when there was no reason for the interaction to become confrontational in the first place. I was simply helping my father understand the menu, not trying to interfere with the ordering process. That comment completely changed the tone of the experience for me. I spent the rest of the meal feeling uncomfortable, especially because I continued having to interact with the same server after that initial exchange. It's unfortunate because I genuinely enjoy the food here and would love to support a Peruvian business, but good food can only go so far when the customer service consistently leaves you feeling unwelcome. I hope management takes this kind of feedback seriously, because the food deserves better than the experience that sometimes comes with it. Typically I expect the steak to lean a little sweet, but here it was more on the salty, savory side. I'm guessing that's the more authentic version? Either way, the dish was enjoyable overall, though I do wish the fries were crispier to balance everything out. We also tried the Causa Rellena, mainly because it looked pretty, like a giant macaron ice cream. Lol. But it wasn't really for me. The texture and flavor reminded me of eating potato salad topped with thick mashed potatoes, which just wasn't my thing. Ordered UberEats pickup here for dinner today after over 6 years of when I had this place last. The chicken is still incredibly flavorful and juicy. I love the Yellow and Green sauce they give. The sauce is creamy, fresh, spicy, perfect to go along with my favorite Tallarin Saltado with Beef and the chicken platter. He was kind of him to not hold me to the second order. I did order the Lomo Saltada with beef and I wanted that cooked medium rare but when I got home it was cooked medium well but it still tasted good and ate it all. I'll have to learn how to order from my coworker next time. There is seating inside this small restaurant but I opt to take out each time. Overall they are a friendly bunch of workers. You'll find this fantastic restaurant nestled in the far corner of a tiny plaza on 722 E Whittier Blvd. The inside of Higo Chicken holds a handful of tables in a welcoming, simple, pastel colored interior. Equally as pleasant has been the greeting and service of the staff during my visits. FOOD: True to its name, their rotisserie chicken is a headliner on the menu. The chicken skin is beautifully roasted which gives it a bit of smokiness to accent the enticing medley of seasoning. The meat is wonderfully succulent as well. Drizzle on their aji verde sauce (cilantro, garlic, lime, chilies, etc.) to enhance the chicken with a zesty, aromatic heat. You can get a whole, half, or quarter size with a side of your choice. I got their Tallarin Verde con Pollo a la Brasa ($14) - it comes with a quarter chicken piece and a spaghetti with cheese, basil sauce, and spinach. I'm hungry just recalling about it. I appreciate it came with a complimentary Papa a la Huancaina - potato with a spicy cheese sauce. Higo Chicken is one of the spots in my rotation of restaurants. Chicken is in their name. It is the item I always order. I always get their half rotisserie chicken (pollo a la brassa) with chaufa. I would order some of their other items, but, my wife won't let me. Their chicken is always nicely marinated and cooked perfectly. It is not too salty like at other places that I've been too. Higo is the place that introduced me to chaufa, or Peruvian fried rice. It's a little different from the Chinese fried rice that I am used to. Their chaufa is basically an egg fried rice with green onions and bell peppers. Their chaufa, along with their chicken makes for a great meal. Service has always been good. The parking lot is very small, and occasionally is full because of the bar a few doors down. I like it and will continue to come back. read more

We also got to try the Yucca a la Huancaina which is fried yucca with a side of cheese sauce. This was good but I don't think I'd get it again. The green sauce that they bring to the table deserves it's own paragraph. Man, that is so good. If you don't know why it's so good, please don't ask.
