A hostel is a good way to cheap out but most are creepy. Highroad Hostel isn't like most of these. It actually has friendly staff and visitors. Good if you're coming to DC alone. There's a sense of community you won't find in a hotel. Hostels are often thought of as creepy. It's a lot different here. The place is pretty clean for a hostel. It's just not as clean but still not that bad in the bathrooms. One very cool thing is that they provide shampoo and soap. Most hostels won't give you anything. The main floor has the bathrooms, the community room, and kitchen. In the morning is a complimentary breakfast. There's cereal, juice, and pastries. A stay in the backpackers dorm is about $23 to $30 a night. The cheapest option is the mixed dorm, where they mix in men and women. It seems to be mostly men. There may be a few women but they're usually all together in their own rooms. Checking in and out is easy. They accept credit cards and they put a hold on your account that's taken off after you leave. A bad thing is that it's not real close to a Metro station, but it's close to the bus. They have all kinds of free information at the front where you check in. It also seems hostels are often in bad locations. It's another thing different about this one. The neighborhood is very cool and there's lots of bars and restaurants.

My friend and I visited DC for two days and stayed in HighRoad for two nights. Our stay was absolutely fantastic, and I would 100% stay there again and recommend it to friends and family. To start off, the building is incredibly beautiful - a Victorian style facade with huge and well-decorated common areas. There are so many great places to sit and chat or read a book and drink coffee. A giant kitchen houses anything and everything you could need to cook - I didn't utilize them, but it was nice to see. They offered a free basic breakfast both mornings we were there (oatmeal, cereal, toast, coffee, tea). The neighborhood around the hostel is hopping, with many bars, restaurants and shops within walking distance. Two very nearby bus routes can take you to all the places you will need to go during your stay (downtown, Union Station, Chinatown, etc.) My friend and I stayed in a 6-bed, mixed room and had a bunk together. The beds weren't the most comfortable thing in the world, but after a long day of jaunting around DC, it was a perfect place to lay my head. The room was quiet, and the other occupants were nice and respectful. The bathrooms were AMAZING. So much room, so many hooks, clean showers/stalls. Clean towels and sheets were provided. To top it off, right before my train home, I was able to take advantage of Sunday night's Pancake and Tater tot Night! All in all, I would absolutely recommend staying at HighRoad. The house was great, the staff was helpful and friendly, and it was 100% worth the price.

I think this could be the best value you'll find in the DC hostel world ;). It's not the most cheap option, but what you get is far outweighs the extra $10 you pay. By that I mean you get a new hostel, memory foam mattresses (i.e. a good night's rest), vicinity to nightlife, fantastic front desk (these guys rock), fantastic kitchen, fast wifi/free computers, and INDIVIDUAL full baths that never require a wait. If you have travel companions, I'd recommend checking HotelTonight / Hotwire etc to see if splitting a hotel room makes more sense. Weekend hotel rates in DC are usually low but can fluctuate drastically depending on season. For single travelers, this hostel is probably the best option.

Not at all what I found at Duo - the staff were courteous and very helpful, the very nice bathroom and kitchen facilities were clean and well-supplied, and the beds, while no frills, were comfortable, warm and clean. There was a mix of residents, in terms of age (at 40 I was not even the oldest one there!) some were international travelers, others were US visitors to DC, I didn't actually meet or talk to any students. I was only able to stay one night because my driver's license still has my DC address, and they don't allow DMV residents to stay for more than a night at a time (I moved less than a month ago). For the price, this is a great find and will definitely be on my list of places to stay when I have to be in DC for work On my first night checking in, there was an older gentleman on the stoop outside telling everyone trying to get in that this was the worst hostel experience he'd ever had, and I wondered what I was getting myself into. I showed up with my luggage at around 14:00 hrs. and the employee at the front desk didn't even respond to my greetings. Every question I asked went unanswered. Rude to say the least. As soon as I gave him my ID, which he did not request respectfully. He barked: check in is at 3PM!. I responded that even in boutique hotels they cut you some slack. No response. So, I asked if I could leave my luggage there, and again, rude, responded, $5.00 per piece! I asked for my IDs and went back to the Zena and left my luggage there free. The first impression is important and the one I got of this place was terrible with this employee. He argued with me in a few occasions, he's absolutely impolite, and seems not clean and moody. Every request was encountered with a rude response and an argument. Terrible! Seems to hate his job there. When I commented about it with roommates, they all felt the same way. Now, the evening and afternoon employees were very nice and polite! Unfortunately the dark man with the beard that is there in the morning takes all the good and turns it negative.

Not great for my roommates, I had to leave the door unlocked while they slept when I snuck out a little after 5:30am. The facilities were so filthy that I didn't even feel comfortable taking a shower there, or using the bathroom much at all. I wasn't given a towel, so showering would have been awkward anyway. More on the lack of hygiene was demonstrated by the presence of all the mice; not fun seeing a dying baby mouse stagger from the kitchen to the bathroom, or hearing about mice running around in the dorm I was assigned to from my roommates. The best things I can say for this hostel is that it's in a popular location, the bedsheets were clean, and the other guests were nice and polite without being overly friendly. This was a last resort because reservations at other places fell through, but I definitely wouldn't return here for anything, and no matter how minimal your needs or budget, I'd advise avoiding this place.

Instead, they called the police on me in Washington DC and I live in Roseville Minnesota. It had to put me out at 1 o'clock in the morning, there's no police report, stating that I did this there's no bill that they sent me for damage of property, nor that I go to death jail, or get a ticket for damage property, but yet when I called hotel.com and told them that I had to sleep on the floor of the Amtrak train station because my train didn't leave until 10 o'clock in the morning they told me I was going to get refund after five days if the hotel did not respond back, the hotel never responded back only sent them something saying that I damaged their property, so hotels.com would not return money because they said I was a unruly customer so therefore they will not be refunding my money, mind you it was only $150 for the room. Upon being checked in I was upgraded from an 8 person co-ed room to a 4 person, female only, room. I did not ask for it and did not expect it, but it was awfully nice! It definitely comforted me as a woman traveling to D.C. my first time. I don't know what the other reviewers are talking about when they say the owner/employees were rude. We were welcomed and shown around immediately, in addition to being accommodated in how I mentioned before. Speaking of being shown around, the amenities were what to be expected at a hostel. There were communal bathrooms, one for each gender. The state of the bathrooms left more to be desired, to say the least. Wear flip flops to shower and there should be no problem! There was also a communal kitchen with a microwave, tea kettle, stove/oven, refrigerator, a washer and dryer (25¢ for each), sink, cupboards, personal lockers for rent (25¢), dining table, pots and pans, and both reusable and disposable dishes. They have a dart board and a lounge-like corner which is very comfy, great music and a nice view. The Wifi is fast as well. Now the big cons: There was a rat in the kitchen-bin when we wanted to make ourselves a late evening snake. That destroyed our appetite big time and kind of frightened us where hygiene is concerned. Also, the bedsheets were pretty dirty and there was a hole (I have a bad feeling that it was rat-related) in our bedroom wall, only covered with a plaster. Overall, a hostel with great potential. And, while the place is somewhat clean with comfortable beds (though on the softer side), it's important to note that the reviews found on sites such as Hostelworld.com and Hostels.com, to name a few, are quite inflated. Here are just a couple of issues that you should be aware of before deciding to book with DC Trekker: 1. The hostel manager is a poor communicator and certainly not the most polished, or professional chap. Also of note ~ I (as did one, or two of the other female patrons [per our convo]) often felt uncomfortable in his presence.... 2, The communication system in place to advise guests/patrons of new, or updated 'House Rules' is simply ineffective and laughable. Example: If the advertised charges(whether the daily [$40/night, or monthly [$750/month] initially paid are scheduled to increase (which they DID) within a matter of days, or weeks; you better make sure you're on the 'lookout' for one of the 30, or so, typed notes on 8 1/2 x 11 sz white paper (& randomly placed on practically every wall, door, cabinet, etc., of the house) used to advise guests of any/all changes to the rules. Otherwise, you're just SOL with no recourse. Never was there any verbal communication, or 'heads up' given by the so-called manager of the hostel to inform patrons of a rate increase, OR a plan to discard your one-week old food item from the community fridge. Did I apply the term 'poor' to describe communications?? Quite frankly, I should have followed my gut when researching DC hostel options by choosing to lodge with Hosteling International, instead. Hosteling International is not only less expensive ($29/night without a monthly commitment), but also located in a much safer and more affluent neighbourhood (e.g. just blocks away from the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Capitol Brewery, 3 major Metro lines at Metro Center, etc.), Definitely more "bang for your buck!" Lastly, you might want to check out Airbnb.com for private options if doing a long-term stay. Happy hosteling! .

Overall, I really enjoyed my stay here and was grateful for an easy, drama free place to stay. Here is to you Shorty and Kevin! ROOMS The rooms are hostel-like, nothing to yay or nay about. No locks on the doors or lockers, so bring your own locks for your luggage. However, I no problem with my items being stole or messed with. There are closets and dressers in the rooms. SERVICE The hostel managers are professional and reasonable. Yes, there are more rules than your usual hostel, however they basically ask you to treat the place like you'd treat your own - or if you were a guest in someone's house. Clean up after yourself, no feet on the furniture, no eating in the living room and please be quiet after 10PM as a curtesy to others. Also, no mix gendered rooms or alcohol in the house - 2 rules I can understand people taking issue with but I understand why they are in place.... THIS IS NOT A PARTY HOSTEL. Most people staying here are in transition for work or school as opposed to traveling through while on some grand adventure. (Aaahhh, I miss those days) THIS PLACE IS IDEAL for anyone looking for a reasonably priced, calm, quiet but friendly place to stay. Ants in the kitchen and slightly dirty rooms and bathrooms can be an issue. I feel the cleanliness never got out of hand but it could have been kept cleaner. However, I was a Peace Corps Volunteer, so I'm over ultra-cleanliness and germaphobia. LOCATION You can't beat the location. Within a few blocks is a Metro station, Target, Best Buy, Starbucks, Five Guys, CVS, Panera Bread, Beth Bath and Beyond, vintage/thrift clothing stores, hole in the wall ethnic food dives, a farmer's market and Safeway. Plus, it is a diverse mix of people from different backgrounds. BUT PLEASE NOTE, crime is an issue. While I was staying there, 3 people in the hostel were mugged and 1 woman was followed back to the hostel by a heckler. HOWEVER, this place is PERFECTLY SAFE if you are smart. Don't' walk home drunk, don't walk home drunk in the dark, don't cut through sketchy side alley ways while drunk and in the dark....and mind your belongings. Police and citizen watchmen are constantly walking down the main streets at night, so stick to those and you'll be fine. Again, 26 year old female here and I NEVER felt at risk. VALUE The monthly rate is very good! $800 for the bed, pillow, sheets, laundry, wifi, tv, kitchen, bathroom and I locked my bike in the back patio area with a U Lock. I find the highly rate a bit expensive but eheh.
