I ordered a Margherita pizza, and it was not good at all! The sauce is bitter and there was too much of it making the pizza soggy and he put slices of deli mozzarella cheese on there. By the time I got home, the cheese had hardened and slid right off all that sauce on the pizza when I picked it up. I also requested they put onions on the pizza and instead of putting sliced onions on top of the pizza, they put these chucks of cut up onions on top of the sauce under the cheese. This place has that quintessential NY/NJ pizza ambiance that you don't find at all pizzerias--it has the perfect mix of the unmistakable pizza-in-the-oven smell mixed with a friendly staff clearly doing their best to fulfill their huge influx of orders. My fiancé and I ordered the classic pie with pepperoni, sausage, and hot peppers along with broccoli bites, fries, and antipasto salad. The portions were large and perfect for splitting between two people (with plenty left over). The pizza reminds me a lot of the pizza at Olive Branch and we were pleased that it came pre-seasoned with Italian spices and a hint of pepper. We were also very impressed that the hot stayed hot from the time that we left the restaurant and got home, even with eating our salad first before the hot food (we're talking a solid half-hour later). my parents love this place and order there all the time. unfortunately that means i'm forced to eat it when I go to visit. the chicken tenders are overdone and dry. the salad dressings are awful (specifically the honey mustard that looks like slime). the tuna panini was DRY. the chopped cobb salad was not chopped at all. I asked to sub cheddar instead of blue cheese. they send cheddar sauce. actual liquid cheese. for a salad. their fries are "okay" which is why they got two stars instead of one. I started ordering for delivery pretty regularly for the past 2 months. One time, early on, they messed up my order and delivered a calzone when I ordered a pizza, but since then, it's been fine. The delivery guys are always nice, arrives when promised. When I call, they have my address on file (I guess they can tell by the tel#?) so that's always convenient. The pizza is good, I get plain. I think it's reasonably priced and even better when you have a coupon. It still tastes good the next day too. (I would give the pizza a 4). I like their pasta, my favorite is cavatelli and meat sauce. Both the sauce and pasta taste fresh with good portion sizes and good amount of meat in the sauce. (I would give it a 5). Fast delivery, friendly delivery driver, and the guy who answered the phone was proactive when my order was missing one of the burgers. Food arrives packaged well, with all the plastic utensils and condiments included. If you have a very large order, they label some of the containers. Chicken wings -- very crispy skin, and they do the sauce on the side for to- go orders. Half pound cheeseburger/Half pound bacon cheeseburger -- burgers are HUGE! Has a really nice char on it that you can taste, and they use kaiser rolls so it can really hold up to the big patties. They cook your burgers are requested, so when I asked for medium rare, that's what I got. Italian sub -- very hearty. Don't always taste the oil/vinegar as described, but still good. Chicken cutlet sub -- cutlets were very deep fried and too thin, so it seemed like I was just eating fried breading. Wouldn't get again. Stopped in here the other night and had some pretty good slices of pizza. I had a mushroom slice. It was chock full of mushrooms and a very crispy crust. I also had a traditional Sicilian square and found that to also be tasty. My friend Jeff had a couple of regular slices and he found the crust to be too soft and the slice to be too cheesy. This place is a good find especially later at night when everything else in Central Jersey closes down. The counter to order right in front of the entrance way can get a little cramped and I am not sure if the window looking into the kitchen is going to win them any extra fans. There are 2 large flat screen TVs and plenty of tables for seating in a pretty much otherwise non-descript dining room. read more

My brother wanted pizza and we just received a pamphlet from this place so we decided to try it. Ordered a meat stuffed pizza and Philly cheesesteak fries. It was expected to come at 8:30--which was an hour wait time as it was--but arrived at 9:15. Over an hour and a half to make and deliver a pizza?? Terrible. The pizza was good. I've been to a few pizza places around the area, but never to highland park pizza. I ordered a chicken Parmesan sandwich to go. When I walked in, the place looked very outdated from the inside and the outside. It's been around a long time, but it definitely needs a big facelift. I can look past that, if the food is outstanding. Unfortunately, the sandwich was very subpar. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give it a two. Lacking flavor throughout the entire sandwich. The chicken was not good, the sauce was not good on the sandwich. Very disappointed. I haven't ventured into the Highland Park area in a while and a buddy told me he liked highland park pizza better than most. Take note I've started a pizza quest in the past and have gone as far as Brooklyn to try a slice of pizza. By the way, Brooklyn pizza is good. Though it will be hard to find that perfect slice i enjoyed in Manhattan close to PS19 on 14th street, I think the name was Altos?, the brooklyn pizza was worth the visit. Back to highland park, ambiance: standard pizza joint, efficient in a way that when you walk in is the order counter and behind it is the seating area, it feels a little cramped. It was lunch time and the staff was busy as people came in for a slice. I went with plain since thats where I like to start when trying a new place. My buddy says he likes their pizza because they don't skimp on the toppings, visually it looked like an average amount of topping, but I also admit other places do skimp on the toppings. My buddy also ordered calamari, though my expectations are usually low when it comes to seafood in central jersey. Taste: the plain slice was good, but it it didn't stand out compared to other pizzas I've had. The fried calamari presentation was excellent, but it was tough to eat which makes me think it was either old or overfried. I don't recommend the fried calamari. With the exception of ordering slices of pizza, take note it does take them time to fill and order. My buddy ordered a salad for takeout and it seemed to take longer than expected. Wow, I've been eating here since 1992. Which is a much shorter amount of time compared to my go-to pizza joint, Brothers, in East Brunswick, which I've been eating at since 1979. NJ makes great pizza. This is a truism. You will find many more really good slice shops in NJ than anywhere else in the world. The best of them top out at 4 stars. But only the very best of them (ahem, Star Tavern in Orange) get the full five. Highland was great when we were in college because they were just consistently solid. Nothing fancy. Nothing over-the-top. Just completely reliable when it came to a slice, a pie, or an Italian sub. And at the end of the day, that's what you really want from a pizza joint. (OK, maybe a cheesesteak, but that's a whole different thread we can have somewhere else.) What was great about Highland Pizza recently was that I took my 6-year old son there for the first time. It was probably my first time back since the 90s. I barely recognized the interior, even though the exterior was completely memorable. My son ordered a "square," meaning a thick Sicilian slice. I've tried to get him into Sicilian and grandma slices, but to no avail. And when the guy behind the counter sliced off a piece for my son to heat up, I was dreading it. You could just tell the pie was clearly made hours before, and the dough looked very dry. (This is where a really good, well-seasoned pizza oven creates magic.) The slice heated up perfectly; completely brought back to life. Soft and chewy on the inside. Toasty, stringy-cheesy on the top. Not too much sauce, either. It was perfect. More importantly, my son thought it was perfect. Oooohing and ahhhhing with each and every bite as if he had only just discovered the amazingness that is pizza! He ate the whole slice. (And it was huge.) My standard pepperoni triangle slice was good, too. You know, 4-star good. Maybe even a 4.1. :) I love seeing places like this survive across generations. It doesn't necessarily mean they're perfect. But it means they're pretty close to it. Can't wait to go back with the boy. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS.....I've lived in Highland Park for 8 years and this WAS my go to place for the entire time here. This place was so good I'd go in just to get a dough and sauce so i could make my own pizzas. The new menu featuring the mexican pizza is due to our conversations about what type of pizza I would be making that night... shameless plug, but true. Anyway for about the past year the quality of their product has gone completely downhill and I will tell you all about it. It starts with a delivery order where the cheese is all off on the pizza and on the cardboard...no big deal, shit happens, no complaint from me to the restaurant. Next week I order a side of broccoli bites with my order only to get boneless wings, this makes even less sense when I tell u I also ordered regular wings. Still, no complaint, chalking it up to human error...again. I order again two week's later and just mention to the person taking my order about the past two orders issues and how im giving them another chance to make it right figuring this woild ensure my order is perfect. Nope, I get my order and there is blue cheese spilled over my entire bag of appetizers. Needless to say, this time I wasnt as forgiving considering everything. So I called and they did the right thing and offered to send more apps out but im paranoid about getting my food fucked with so I told the manager not to worry about it bc he just lost a loyal customer. Three weeks later, I need a good pizza place and my girlfriend talks me into giving them one more chance. So I call and order broccoli bites as a side again, this time I get broccoli rabe. It took until this to get me fed up and ready to unleash. So I call these clowns back and ask for the manager. After telling him the numerous instances and refusing his "answer" of sending the right order he hangs up on me. I call back and tell him how his food is good but the quality of his business is overall failing either due to poor management or quality of staff at which point he says to come down to the pizzeria to take it up with him. What a clown...I tell him I would be happy to come down and tell him how he is mismanaging his business into the ground and how to fix it but not during a snow storm. He mumbles some bs as I hang up on him. The next day I am eating the other half of the chicken parm sub i ordered and I bite down on something hard. I spit it out and look and find a piece of metal that is used to hold chicken together. Thank fucking god I only chipped a tooth and didnt swallow it bc if I had swallowed it I would own this piss poor runned business and turn it back into a high quality establishment. For many years, I lived a few blocks away from Highland Pizza and never ate their food. Friends had told me the pizza here was "awful." What they should have said was "awfully good"! Let me be clear: this is thin-crust, rubbery-cheese, grease-dripping-onto-the-paper-plate pizza. But if you enjoy that type of pizza, Highland Pizza's version is best-in-class. Now I've moved away and I regret missing out on this pizza all those years. I try to visit at least once when I'm visiting town. The crust is what makes it special: it's thin but crisp, and it snaps between your teeth like a cracker rather than requiring you to rip it apart. It's a mildly sweet crust - not quite the sugary dessert dough of Papa John's, but also not the bland baked-paste of Domino's. The cheese is cheap but tangy and good enough. The sauce is unremarkable except that it doesn't try too hard to steal your attention from the crust - it's barely seasoned at all, which I appreciate in a pizza (I'm tired of "homemade sauce" being code for "too much oregano"). I've had a pretty good meatball sub there that I assume uses the same sauce, and again, nothing special. You're getting this pizza for the crust and the cheese. If you order a slice of pepperoni, they take a slice of cheese pizza and cover every bit of it with thin-sliced pepperoni before putting it in the oven. Makes you feel like you're getting your money's worth for the topping (and adds significantly to the grease-dripping factor). I haven't tried the other toppings - don't see the point. I've done takeout and had to let my slices sit before digging in, and the crust stayed crisp through a 15 minute wait, so I'm guessing that takeout or delivery of a whole pizza would be just as good. The restaurant is nothing special - old style fast-food booths, a tv in the corner, big stacks of beverages still in cases, a bit dingy but not worse than the average non-chain fast food place. The low lights remind me of Penn Station. Definitely not a place to take a date. There's not a great selection of bottles and cans of drinks there, so if you're picky about what you drink with your pizza, you might want to do take out. There seem to be lots of regulars who chat with the guys who work there, but I've never felt like the staff are ignoring me for them. New life lesson: you should always try local places for yourself, and order a few different things on the menu in case there's something really special there. After reading such a great reviews on Yelp, I thought to give this Pizza a try by ordering two large pie of vegetables/BBQ chicken pizza on the phone with them. I even told them I wanted to give them a try because I was reading a great review about the pizza shop ( and obviously they dint care). I politely asked them how long it would take for me to pick up the pizzas, they told me about 25 minutes. When I arrived it was more than 40 minutes already. I patiently waited for another 20 minutes, I asked the gentleman that i'm in rush and really need the pizzas to be ready. Listen to this........The gentleman told me " Only if you want to eat raw pizza!" Excuse me sir, perhaps I don't want to eat the raw pizzas and that is the reason why I called the pizza advance to make me pizzas. Still have not found good pizza in NJ. I understand that we have high expectations coming from Brooklyn, NY -- actually two blocks from DiFarra's. BUT, this is not good pizza. We do order it however, because we'd rather order from a bunch of local guys than Papa John's or Pizza Hut, which is about the level that its at. Someone recommended that we tell them to make the crust extra crispy, but it still lacks the right texture and flavor. We have ordered other things from them, meatball and pasta dishes which were satisfying when I can't or don't have time to cook for myself. But, that's all it is, just a quick substitute for when I can't cook myself. The good part is that everyone is very nice. So, we'll keep going back when we just gotta have a slice or a pie. read more

The food was ten stars! By far the best food I've had in New Jersey. I only knock a star off because we paid for 2 cannolis and didn't get any. We really talked up the cannolis to my kids (we're from California) only have no cannolis when we got home. The service was really nice too. The calzone was AMAZING . I ordered a cheese steak with onions and enjoyed it. According to my co-worker HP has the best cheese steaks...better than philly. I have yet to have an actually philly cheese steak so I can't really prove her wrong. The second time I dined in and got onion rings with my cheese steak. I was actually in the mood for a fat sandwich, so I added the onion rings into the cheese steak, best idea ever. I've ordered here a few times and I don't know why I keep trying it when I'm just 'ehh' on it. I need to try other places to compare it but I don't think it's anything spectacular about this place. I think it's kind of expensive for the half decent pizza we get. The crust is usually a little burnt and a little too thin for me. This restaurant has a nice family vibe with courteous individuals. Due to having my own preferences in food, I may not like what others like, for the most part. One incident where the pizza dough was a bit tough, however, it did not mar my overall experience with them. Their customer service is excellent. I have never come across an angry individual, or one who seems uninterested in being there. The drivers are prompt, friendly and definitely professional. I have had a select few things, due to my eating habits, and my hubby says he likes everything he has ordered from them. Compared to previous reviewers, I do not feel it fair to measure this pizza to that of Brooklyn's or the wings to that of Buffalo's.
