As I was making the drive from New Orleans back to Dallas I had an urge for coffee and stopped at this highly regarded coffee shop. From the moment you walk in, it is clear that this is a regular spot for college students to hang out and get some schoolwork done. I ordered a 20 oz cappuccino to go and looking back on it, I wish I would have ordered one of the delicious looking pastries they had. Besides the point, the coffee was the average price you would expect to pay for a coffee I think it was around $5. Hearing all this craze about the coffee this shop had, I fully expected to be blown away by this cup. I sadly wasn't, not saying the coffee wasn't bad, it just tasted like your typical cup of coffee you would get at any coffee shop. Overall, if you are ever in the Baton Rouge area and are craving a cup of coffee at a fair price I would definetly reccomend going here. read more

This place has great coffee and a great atmosphere to sit down and study for hours on end...that is if you're lucky and the WiFi decides to work for you. This coffee shop has the worst WiFi I have ever come across. The problem isn't that it's slow or anything. The problem is actually being able to connect to it in . And it doesn't matter if you're a regular like me and automatically connect to the WiFi when your computer is in the vicinity of the building. Imagine sitting down with your iced coffee in hand, ready to get to work and then realizing that today the internet router at Highland has decided to once again confuse your computer's IP address with someone else's in the coffee shop, completely not allowing you to connect to the WiFi whatsoever. This has happened to me multiple times and I just have to leave because I can't use my computer without WiFi of course. It's beyond frustrating after I walk all the way there and have to walk all the way back to my dorm just to connect to WiFi that works. read more

Highland Coffees is a pretty standard college coffee shop. They stand out from a standard coffee shop because their offerings are diverse. You can have almost any style of coffee and/or tea with them. Their pastries are delicious. But Highland Coffees is more than that. It's the atmosphere they project of a calm, quiet place to work and study, or take a break from the stress of life and relax. They've really captured the essence of "the third place"; that other place that isn't work or home, but somewhere you choose to be because it's safe and welcoming. Unfortunately, this contributes to the difficulty of finding seating here. I typically have to take my coffee to go. But that hasn't stopped me from coming back for more. read more

This establishment is truly a gem in Baton Rouge and is one of my most happy-making places worldwide. The name is slightly misleading, though, as it doesn't do justice to their excellent selection of fresh and customizable hot tea options. Since they gather the leaves and create the tea bags by hand, you can request any combination of flavors and scents for a truly excellent tea experience. They also have delicious freshly-made soft granola bars, cakes, and stuffed croissants. No one cares if you're there for hours. Park your bike on the rack, say hi to the regulars, put some honey in your tea, and enjoy the free wi-fi. In late May, sit under the honeysuckle trellis. "Superb Coffee, Roasting Room & lots of space to stretch"... need I type more? Of course I can... I would love to elaborate! This was my first time visiting Highland Coffee and boy was I impressed! It was a hot day out, so of course I was in the mood for a cold drink! We were offered samples of the various cold-drip coffees they had. After tries of couple flavors, I had my tastes set on the hazelnut. It was deeee-licious! I do not remember the last time I had a flavored coffee, where I was able to actually taste the flavor of the coffee... the hazelnut just jumped out at me! I walked around as I sipped my coffee and found the "roaster room" - yes the reviews have been confirmed... they have a roasting room on-site! After reading several reviews on the quality of the coffee... I concur with the different responses! Yes, the coffee is very high-quality and I think it is because the roasting occurs on-site! A lot of room to stretch out... the cafe is HUGE, so you definitely do not feel like you are being cramped! If you feel like sitting inside, you can enjoy the luxuries of their indoor seating, but if you feel like getting some air and some sun, enjoy their courtyard area. Lastly... the staff was super attentive and very patient with any indecisiveness you may have about what coffee/tea drink you would like to choose. I was pleasantly surprised with the ambience of HC. This coffee house is also really spacious. The coffee is good and strong. What most sets Highland apart is there is no special parking. The coffee house reflects a university ambiance better than the "coffee houses" at the student union and the LSU Barnes and Noble Bookstore. Highland Coffee is not surrounded by a barren parking lot. It is nested just off busy Highland Road directly across the street from Louisiana State University, near the religious chapels. It faces Chimes and old oak trees. Unless it is the scene of local musicians performing, it is quite, serene, and placid. Highland Coffee has a lovely courtyard in several manifestations or visual spaces or outside rooms with banana trees and faded umbrellas, a pale mural, and subtle designs. It is absolutely beautiful. I am always tempted to photograph the place simply because it photographs well. Baton Rouge, apparently like most of America, is filled with coffee houses--some national chains, some local chains, and some unique stand alone coffee houses. Most sell run-of-the mill coffees labeled as high end and many have hundred thousand dollar machines to brew their merely ordinary offerings. Many sell roasted coffee beans. However, like Whole Foods Market, Highland Coffee vends coffee brewed from beans they roast. They offer the usual dark roasts our people seem to like but they also offer subtle medium roasts with complexity and nuance. I like the wide selection of coffee beans from Allegro at Whole Foods Market or Target though Trader Joe's sells single source beans as well as does P J's. Even Starbucks sometimes sells some high end single source though they mostly sell blends with unnamed sources. Highland Coffee offers a smaller selection than Allegro but they sell well considered and excellent single source coffees. Most customers seem to favor the usual dark roast but here you get excellent alternative choices. Highland Coffees I think always brews beans they roast. Some elitists complain that Highland does not employ the techniques that they believe a real coffee house ought to use. The barristers know how to make coffee. They do it with élan and they seem proud to work at Highland Coffees and Teas. Sometimes customers here even engage in conversation though most of the time customers engage their laptops often at the same time they also engage their mobile telephone devices. Most of the time, customers seem to be students at work at their omnipresent laptops and/or mobiles but other people do visit especially on weekends. Even a few old geezers besides me go here. Some people sometimes read newspapers. I do not live anywhere near this coffee house. I have to take a bus and make a connection but the trip is worth the trouble at least a couple of times a year. It is a good place to stop after a meal at Cafe Louie or the Chimes. read more

One of the best coffee shops in town, no doubt. A landmark in Baton Rouge. AND NO DRIVE THRU. In my opinion, drive thrus have ruined the coffee shop atmosphere. I have worked at both types of coffee shops and often miss the atmosphere of zero-drive-thru cafes. A lot of students study here so it's typically very quiet. If you want to get rowdy you should stick to the patio ;) Their espresso is great, pastries baked-in-house which is rare these days (CC's pastries are delivered frozen, they only bake their cookies.) Highland Coffees is a quintessential Baton Rouge institution! It is my most favorite coffee shop ever. I spent my student years there, studying or hanging out. I could not start my day without a bagel and a coffee from Highland. I have so many great memories from there. The coffees and teas are always fresh and taste great! I moved to New York in 2011 and I did some extensive research to find a coffee or tea shop that could live up to my expectations but I could not find anything even close. Also, the beans themselves are flavored, i.e. they don't use Torani simple syrups to make this coffee hazelnut and that coffee Viennese. As a type 1 diabetic, my pancreas really, really appreciates that. They have a decent selection of loose leaf tea as well as coffee for those who are inclined. Free internet with fantastic speed; never off and never slow, even during peak traffic hours. I've streamed movies and TV shows from Hulu and Netflix from here at 3 PM while waiting on study groups with no problems. Relaxed / studious decor. Mostly students, teachers, and postdocs so even when it's crowded the noise level isn't extreme. Also, plenty of seating; even when it is crowded it doesn't feel that way because there's so much room. The outdoor seating area is shaded and comfortable. Be courteous and kind to the staff, which are very laid back, by bringing change / actual money for tipping purposes as they will not let you do so when using plastic. read more

This is one of the things I miss most about college. Highland Coffees is what you expect a coffee shop to be. The ambience is amazing. The coffee is amazing (and they roast their own beans). The customization options on the drinks are endless, like most coffee shops. The regulars love this place, which was affirmed when the owner of the building was on the verge of pulling HC's lease and the regulars organized a campaign to save the location. I can't believe the owner of the building was eager to kick Highland Coffees out--so glad they didn't (really, a chain restaurant over a local coffeeshop?). Highly recommend this place to anyone in the Baton Rouge area--the baristas know what they are doing to brew your perfect cup. They really take their time to make sure you are happy with your order--that's certainly a good thing. As far as the environment, there is plenty of indoor and courtyard space to do some studying or catch up with friends and even with the extra space, it still seems like it's hard to find an extra chair. This place was a winner for me. I loved how much room we had. The barista was wonderful. She gave me several suggestions and seemed very enthusiastic about her job. I also listened to her help several people in line with the same energy. The white chocolate cappuccino was so amazing. It wasn't bitter at all and packed a nice caffeine punch. It's lucky we have a decent coffee shop here. The coffee's just average, so are the generic dessert items...way over-priced for their taste and presentation (almost $2 for a small coffee). One thing my father, who is an espresso expert, notice is that the espresso they sell is not made right. usually it takes a good second for the coffee to 'drip', go through the grinds, and come out of the spout, creating a nice looking 'creme' on the surface of the shot. Here the water goes right through the grinds, just quickly trickles down into the shot glass. The fault is that either the barista didn't compact the coffee enough, or the machine's just a piece of shit. With that said, a very spacious, almost homey place, with outdoor seating in the garden (!) This is practically the only coffe place around, so enjoy! read more

I really enjoy this coffee shop, though I rarely have a reason to visit. I really love the selection of teas (I am the sort of blasphemous lout who can't abide coffee). Each time I come, I make sure to try a new type of tea. This time, I got the Hot Chai with a biscotti. I was initially disappointed that they make the chai with water, without a way to cut down on how much H2O was used, but they were able to use whole milk, so it pretty much balanced out. I love that their chai is spicier than the chai one finds at Starbuck's. My biscotti was awesome. It was sweet, and nicely flavored while being hard, like biscotti should without being a dried out brick of carbs, Overall, I would suggest visiting if you need to kill some time around the LSU area. read more

100% my favorite coffee place in Baton Rouge. I'm so addicted to their iced chai, and their muffins and snacks are great as well.

I'm so sad that my favorite coffee shop in town is closing. There is simply no place that has better coffee. (Keep in mind that I only drink plain coffee - no fancy mocha frappe turtle latte sippies here). They roast their own beans and you really can taste the difference. They also have freshly roasted whole beans available for sale which I often buy. I grind them at home and use a French press which makes the coffee come out delicious. Aside from the amazing coffee, this place is large with lots of seating and free wifi. The wifi can be a little slow at times but no big deal. There are also pastries and other snacks of you get hungry. So sad to hear they are closing but hopefully they'll relocate somewhere close by. read more

I love going to Highland Coffees whenever I am on the campus at LSU. Since I do not like Starbucks and CC's very much, Highland Coffees is a good option. This what I like about this place: - I really like the flavored coffee option, which changes daily (or every couple of days). - I love reading in a coffee shop which is full of people (it is almost always packed with people) - I like supporting a local business Suggestion to the owner: The coffee shop could use some renovations, but I do understand that it might not be financially feasible. At the very least, I think something should be done about the bathrooms. They are not very clean. read more

Good place to hang out with a book or a friend. They serve their coffees in real china cups, which is a welcome change from those paper cups that are given at some other coffee shops. There are lots of places to sit but since it's next to LSU, the seats are almost always full with students and their computers. Still one the best iced coffees ever. I love the strong iced Viennese coffee at Highland Coffee. It's rich and strong and still taste like coffee after you add cream and sugar. The staff is very friendly and its a great place to spend a few hours having coffee or one of many loose teas and enjoying a pastry or biscotti. This place is truly quite wonderful. As a med student, I'm always looking for a cozy place for late night studies that isn't the stifling library. Highland Coffees fits the bill perfectly. Great, reasonably priced, locally roasted coffees and an extensive tea selection coupled with ample study space makes this spot an ideal choice. I've never not been able to secure a table, regardless of when I arrive and there are plenty of powerstrips scattered around the seating areas that every computer can remain fully charged (this is important, don't laugh). The staff is usually friendly and always helpful: one time the charming barista even suggested mixing two teas when I couldn't make up my mind - it was a concoction oh her favorite black tea and an herbal citrus tea she had recently discovered (as she's apparently as indecisive as I am) and proved to be delicious, and they happily made my tea into a tea latte by adding steamed milk (made this half-Indian boy very happy). Love the high ceilings. The soothing art contributes to a contemplative atmosphere. And the crowd of local regulars which I've found myself becoming one of adds to the quirky charm. My only complaint is the lack of snacking options - they have a full range of pastries and cakes and sundry other baked goods. But beyond oatmeal and granola bars, there are no other healthier or more meal-like items available. I understand this is a coffee shop and not a cafe or restaurant, but I think adding a panini press or some wraps or even fruit would be a nice touch to round out the other wonderful aspects of the place. Thankfully there are tons of other places to eat in the neighborhood, so it's not a big deal. Bottom line, Highland Coffees is great and I plan to return regularly. read more

They have a Probat roaster, and they know how to use it! Their system for ordering is like that of the Intelligentsia coffeebars: the person who takes your order is the same person who makes your drink and then rings up your purchase when it's ready. I ordered a macchiato and was totally pleased with the result. The barista asked me to choose between a medium and a dark roast, so of course I chose the medium. I think I got Kenyan AA. I went back for a second visit, this time getting my macchiato to go. The result this time was much less successful than on my first visit -- the coffee tasted rather bitter. As one of my friends likes to say, when you make espresso, every shot is a chemistry experiment. Sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't. I'd like to think that a really good barista would have detected the bad shot by sight and started over again. We can always dream, can't we? Highland Coffees is spacious and inviting; the ambiance is mellow. This is a real find -- don't miss it. read more

Great selection of loose tea. Pleasant atmosphere. Fantastic pastries. Parking situation can be a little hairy, depending on the time of day. Coffee can disappoint, depending on who makes it. If you want a dry cappuccino you better ask for a macchiatto. They use a powdered chocolate mix in the iced mocha instead of the chocolate syrup they use in their hot mocha, with disappointing results. Getting quality foam out of these baristas is like pulling teeth. If you're looking for tea, pastries, and a place to study near campus this is it. If you want great coffee, go to Perks. read more
