OMG!!! One of the best pastries I've EVER had!!! I have a problem digesting shortbread since my endometriosis diagnosis. I was told this was a shortbread Jewish pastry but I couldn't resist. I had a few bites waiting for stomach cramps to start. I waited and waited and waited and nothing happened. All I'm saying is wrap me 2 dozen because this latina is taking them back to Houston. Go local! This quaint hidden gem is just a few miles down from the chain coffee shops that taste like burnt beans. Drive to the eclectic area of Perkins Road and buy local. Garden District Coffee is a wonderful little local coffee house on Perkins Rd. They have a really great patio area out front with lush greenery that makes it seem very tropical. The interior is very roomy with plenty of seating space for you to hang out in while consuming their great coffee and teas. They always have an array of tempting baked goods on the counter to add onto your drink purchase if you wish to do so. They roast coffee in house, and often have some great offerings on their daily brews. Parking is really the only problem you might encounter, as there is little of it! The neighboring businesses get miffed if you take up all their spaces. However, one can park at the lot by the dentists office and Coyote Moon located just north of Garden District Coffee and walk the short distance to get your caffeine! read more

Well, the sweetest smells of spring are up and coming!! This is a lovely cafe to sit down, chillax and just enjoy that! During the first portion of my morning, I sat outside for a meeting I had. They have a beautifully spacious patio/courtyard area that has plenty of shade, too! I guess you can call me a cafe junkie because I spend a majority of my days at a coffee shop using as my satellite office. Large cafe... parking can be a challenge during a busy day. I came here in mid-morning and stayed until about 1:30pm and was happy to see the cafe was still very busy throughout the duration of my stay. It was such a lovely day to enjoy a cafe latte with soy milk, so I did just that. They had a lovely array of cafe pastries. I can honestly say that I am not really a morning pastry kind of girl, but for those that love them, you will have several to choose from. The customer service was very friendly and they were also very patient with me, as I was deciding what to order. My only complaint was the parking situation. A great place for a meet up! read more

I often continue to go to Garden District Coffee out of nostalgia as I've always loved their granites, variety of iced coffee and pastries which have not changed over the years. It continues to be a good place to hang out and have a coffee either inside at one of several tables or their outside space. The quality of the products is alway consistent and always good. The 3 stars really comes more from the customer service experience or lack there of. When I'm going for a coffee I don't always want or need an effusive welcome but I'd like to leave the experience not being made to feel as if I'd interupped someone's day which is how I've felt the last few visits. read more

Great location with decent coffee but this place has several issues.: 1. Terrible internet. Less than 1mb speed. It's been like that for years. For some reason, they don't seem to care. 2. I've been meaning to visit this place but I always passed it up. I decided to go one weekend. I love it! A great quiet place, hidden so that if you need to do some studying or writing, you got it. Overall, I enjoyed my time here, though I was disappointed by the service and the scones. My friend and I went in to kill some time, and he decided to get some work done. I picked it because I used to drive by it all the time on my way to work, and the building is tucked away behind a beautiful patio surrounded by pretty plants. When you walk in, the first thing you notice is the front counter is loaded with treats. There are cookies and cakes and other pastries. The prices are reasonable, two pastries and two medium drinks came out to about $13. I had the White Chocolate Raspberry scone. While I enjoyed the flavor, it was almost like eating a brick of scone -- way too dense. It was also really weird that I could not find a menu that listed what baked goods they had and how much they cost. Also, only some of the pastries are labeled. So...you can have surprise cake! The barista was also a bit snobby. She did not know that I had spent 6 years working as a barista, so I knew what drinks were. As I had never been to this coffee shop before, I had some questions, but she was condescending when I tried to ask about various drink options and their drink recipes. This is the main reason I am only giving them 3 stars. read more

It's a serene place to hang out in the evenings. Ideal for a romantic chat, gossip with friend, read and/or browse. There is plenty of room to sit around - inside with light music or outside in the greenery. Coffee is authentic and good but the only downside is even for dine in, it's served in a disposable cup as against a ceramic ones. We had a cappuccino and a mocha with the turtle cake. Cappuccino is good while Mocha is Ok. The cale is delicious, rich in chocolate, creamy and nutty. I would recommend this place to hang out often. read more

This a great coffee shop to catch up with a friend. The outside setting is gorgeous while the interior is good to study in. The coffee is good, I usually get a frozen granita. Love the atmosphere of this place - very relaxed and quiet. Outside is pet friendly and they'll actually give you a water bowl for your pup upon request. I'm not a coffee drinker, so I'm glad they have options such as the Cranberry Lemon Tea - super delicious and very refreshing. My only knocks on this place are the parking and the staff. Parking is very limited, but I imagine its because most people that come here live in the neighborhood and either walk or ride their bike here, something I could deal with and still probably give them four stars if the staff wasn't so snippy. The first time I was there it was because I asked for a drink suggestion other than coffee and the second time it was because of a credit card issue. This is a wonderful local coffee shop near the Garden District. This shop has different coffees, teas, scones, cakes and cookies. I am guilty of buying the blueberry scone every time I go in for a mocha. It is delicious!!! Chances are if you're from Baton Rouge you'll probably see someone you know! They have indoor and outdoor seating. It is very relaxed and laid-back. They even have T-shirts that you can purchase to show the world how much you love Garden District coffees! I liked this place. The porch looked inviting but it was full when we went. It was also super hot so maybe when it cools down. My Americano was perfect and so was the service. The prices are fair. They have a lot of alternatives for milk such as soy and almond milk. The scones are the real deal. They also roast the beans on-site which I am a huge fan of. I will certainly come back. read more

Garden district has such a nice set up for a few covered and uncovered outdoor tables. As a heads up, don't bring external food or drink out there as I observed staff come outside and kindly but assertively enforce that with other patrons. From my experience here, the food showcased on the counter is much better than the actual beverages. This time I asked for an iced chai as it was too late in the afternoon to get coffee and it was hot outside. It was disappointing to see them take out tazo chai tea concentrate and splash it into a 12oz cup, add milk and ice cubes, and be charged more than what the entire carton of concentrate probably sells for. Their other cold tea beverages didn't appeal to me as they seemed to be of the fruit tea variety, so one is definitely just paying for the coffee shop feel over the actual options. I'd give it a 3.5 as the outdoor area feels nice despite the table being rather wobbly, the workers being pleasant, but the food and drink options being worth coming out for. Outside, i saw about 3 tables under covered seating and four uncovered. Outdoor seating was all really popular and never vacant for too long. read more

We thoroughly enjoyed our coffee - hazelnut latte and pecan iced coffee. When we went to pay for our drinks we paid in cash and patiently waited for our change. Yet, the individual working the register simply dropped our change in the tip basket. Once she realized we would like our change back and simply said "oh I'm sorry." We did not get our change back. This is a charming and sleepy coffee shop along Perkins Road. Truly the best in BR as it has defined my experience growing up in town - it is such a special place. If I ever found myself in Baton Rouge in my 60's, I'd still come right here, probably ordering the same thing - a large Plain Jane and a Strawberry Hamentashen. I used to really like this place. Although I've been living out of town and not visiting often, I've been stopping in for over ten years, since it was called "Perks" under a previous owner. Sadly, a recent experience at Garden District Coffee was highly negative and insulting. I understand that a coffee shop needs to take measures to assure that folks taking up space are helping pay the bills, and if I am going to sit down and use the WiFi, I'm going to buy something. Always. But I *REQUIRE* internet access for my work, and occasionally, I've visited a coffee shop, purchased a drink/snack, and then been unable to connect for one reason or another. There I am - having done my part - unable to do what I came l do. Very frustrating, and not always the fault of the business. Therefore, I usually - but not always- connect to the WiFi before making my purchase. In cases where the WiFi passphrase is withheld until purchase, I just explain that I'll make my purchase after connecting. This has never before been a problem for me, at least not until this recent experience. In this case, when I asked the Barrista - a gal I've seen there on numerous occasions - for the password, I was told bluntly - and in no friendly manner - "I can't give out the WiFi, until you buy something". When I explained my reason for wanting to connect before purchasing, I got some kind of sarcastic reply, and though I don't recall exactly what was said, I *do* recall the unpleasant feeling of being insulted and the feeling of my integrity being called into question. I'm a middle aged professional, and it's not like the place is large enough that I could promise to buy and then disappear into the crowd, having conned the business out of its precious WiFi. I started going to this coffee shop when it was called "Perks" and was owned/managed by a different group of people. It was really nice then, and it has gotten better over time. The art on the walls changes every couple of months. They used to have an improv show called "The Family Dinner" that performed every Friday night, but I don't think that's a thing anymore. My favorite aspect is the covered outdoor seating area. It's very plush and green and quiet despite being right on top of Perkins Road. I love sitting there with a latte and reading or doing work on the computer (their WiFi is strong and extends pretty far). Plus, they offer plenty of alternatives to regular milk, e.g. sweetened and unsweetened almond and soy milks. The baristas there are very sweet and well-trained. There's a short, skinny woman with long dark hair that makes the best cappuccino I've ever had. They change their internet password every few months, and will only provide it to regular paying customers. So no freebies! There's also a minimum amount for using charge cards, but it's not hard to meet; a large latte or iced coffee will do ya. Also, it can get very, very crowded and sometimes there are not enough outlets to go around, but that's more related to the overall size of the place and not bad planning. read more

I use to be a regular customer at GDC. I had several tutoring students that I met there on a regular basis, and most times, me, the student and their parent would purchase something. However today only my student bought a cookie, and as we were walking out the door, the barista shouts across the cafe in front of everyone that next time, if we did not ALL THREE buy something, she would kick us out. Shocked and surprised, I responded that we would not be returning ever and she said that sounded good to her. I am highly offended and I will be sharing my story with everyone. Honestly, from the looks of these reviews, I am not the only customer that they have ever been rude to. I can understand that you don't want continuous freeloaders, but this is the first time I had not bought something in the fifty times I have been there. This is a laid back little coffee shop located in the Garden District/Southdowns area. I like the patio area outside, especially on a pretty day. Its a good spot to meet up with a friend, grab a coffee and sit out at the patio. It's a nice coffee shop that the locals frequent a lot. You usually see a lot of the regulars here sipping on coffee and working on their laptops. The have different coffee blends and pastry items as well. Iced drinks and such come unsweetened so you just fix it up yourself. I've had to request more soy or sweetener when I come here because I find the coffee to be really strong. I like to switch up my local coffee shops, because it keeps things interesting. Next time, I'll try some of their foodie items and a different type of coffee blend. read more

Garden District has been my favorite coffee spot in Baton Rouge for years now. Even when I lived 30 minutes away I would go get an iced vanilla latte every morning. I didn't know what a granita was until ordering it one day...it's amazing. Their coffee is unique and I genuinely haven't gotten anything close to it any where else in Baton Rouge. One time I defended my thesis and then when out and got really drunk with some friends. When I woke up on the floor of my office the next morning, I was still pretty toasted. I made a pass at finishing some work, but instead drunkenly listened to hip hop and harassed some officemates as they trickled in to work. Around 10 AM I left for a brighter future in New Orleans, still wasted. Don't worry, I wasn't driving. On the way home my comrade and I stopped at this place to procure some much needed caffeine. From that point forward my memory becomes a bit hazy as I was in the process of slowly declining from morning drunk to afternoon hungover. One detail remains clear however, I was fortunate enough not to vomit on myself or anyone near me and for that, Garden District Coffee probably deserves some credit. If only this cafe´ was located outside the uninspired grasp of Baton Rouge, I would surely procure their hangover retarding services more frequently. read more
