I came in here to browse the Miik line since I heard about it from the green living website. I was disappointed though to see how casual the clothing looked, especially the cardigans which I was interested in. $180 for a paper thin cardigan with stitching similar to the kind on yoga pants? Methinks not. Basically it's overpriced travel / sports clothing. They had some nice rain coats from North Face however. Might be worth a look in the winter time when they have the winter coats out. We shall see! read more

For the most part, I received great service at this store. The girl I had been dealing with was quite helpful and was able to track down the item I was looking for and order it in for me. The staff overall are friendly and welcoming. I came here for one thing specifically... and ONLY because everywhere else I called around town weren't willing to, or couldn't, order it in for me but they seem to have a nice (yet limited) supply of mostly higher end gear and clothing. I doubt very much that I would shop here again as there are other places which have a far greater selection for lower prices. One thing I was certainly disappointed with was that they didn't honour the '10% off your purchase' check-in offer. The owner claimed to know nothing about it... I'm not quite sure how that would happen. read more

This place has gone wildly downhill and has completely lost its integrity. And lost me as a customer. I have been an irregular customer there for longer than i can remember. Decades. They are now so desperate to eke every cent out of each sale that they forego standards of sales principles adhered to by all other retail establishments. Shop online. Shop at Sporting Life. Shop anywhere but here. They have become sleezy. I went to buy a t-shirt yesterdsy that had been originally priced at $89 and was clearly marked with a Sale Price sticker of $35. The manager admitted that they had mis-priced it and it should have been marked at 50 percent off. He arrogantly proclaimed that he 'could not' go beneath that. The pricing marked on it was very clear. When i mentioned that i thought it was illegal for them not to sell it at the marked price he took an agressive stance, folded his arms and smugly pronounced that it wasn't illegal and wished me a nice day. How can a haberdashery stay in business when their ethics are so low? Find a place with some modicum of honour. The guy that used to run this place was terrific. It no longer deserves your business. read more

A nice place for outdoor enthusiasts to check out for clothing, shoes, backpacks and other accessories. Lots of brands being sold here, even though the store doesn't look very big. Staff are knowledgeable about the products, happy to help you or leave you alone to browse. They also have a kid store, just a few doors south of the main store. read more

It's all right. They don't have a lot of selection, but most of all, the prices are just insane. You have to go when it's Boxing Day so that things are "reasonably" priced after the 50% discount (think: $170 instead of $340). That said, they have some Canada Goose (quite a selection) that never goes on sale (obviously, it's trendy right now). They have Arcteryx (sp?), North Face, Canada Goose, Patagonia and Lole. The staff is quite knowledgeable and friendly as well. read more

Went in this past sunday looking for some Icebreaker underwear. They've got a solid selection, although it is quite expensive but I'm not sure if that's the stores fault or Icebreakers fault. Anyhow, the dude that helped me out was great, got me into what I was looking for. It's like a kinder gentler sporting life with staff who aren't morons read more

Allot of the stuff is regularly priced, but some of the things are just way too expensive and outdated, like their Hero 2 cameras. You can get Hero 3 for the same price. The staff is extremely pushy. I have never had to turn down help from the store staff so many times in my life. Gets extremely irritable. Bought what I needed, but wont be returning. read more

Excellent customer service. They helped us pick out an outfit for a picky, indecisive boy, who also had just had a major sugar rush and was a little "jumpy" and needed something for his Grade 6 grad party. They put together 3 different outfits and waited patiently whilst he tried them on. We also bought shoes, when one of the pairs was not available in his size, they called an (unrelated) neighbourhood store to get them to reserve them for us. That struck me as going above and beyond regular customer service. We will shop there again for sure. read more

Superb customer service and lovely, friendly staff. We have shopped several times in this store since arriving from England last year and cannot fault it. As a family, we received excellent help with winter and spring clothing. They have some very good sales too, if you happen to be there at the right time. Top notch brands. I had a problem with a Patagonia coat, which was not the store's fault, and Higher Ground and Patagonia could not have been more helpful. Customer Service above and beyond. All the staff are helpful and knowlegable and Marie is wonderful. Would highly recommend Higher Ground. :-) read more

Great selection of quality products and very knowledgable staff also love resident doodle! Only complaint is I find prices high but sale prices are great. I keep their clothes for years. Both men's and ladies sections are very diverse for sports, travel, leisure. read more

Great store. I might be a bit on the extensive side but they make up for it with great customer service. There is even a dog in there that is nice, so definitely a dog friendly store. read more

We've been shopping at this store for many years and it's our favourite place to go for outdoor casual clothing. We've purchased everything from cashmere sweaters, yak trax winter grips for our shoes, Keen water shoes, dresses, jeans, sunglasses, and even a swiss army camping knife. The staff and owner/manager are always cheerful and helpful. This store doesn't sell crap, but rather they bring in quality Canadian and European brands. Some of the brands we particularly like are Autumn Cashmere, Miik, Horny Toad, and Ice Breaker. The reviewer who commented on the store being expensive, doesn't really know what they're talking about. The brands are higher end to match the Yonge/Eglinton vibe and the prices are competitive for the quality. They also frequently have great sales on at the end of season. We're not by any means affluent, but have noticed the clothing at Higher Ground lasts 10x longer than lower quality sporting clothing we've bought at department stores. For instance, Ice Breaker run wear is simply amazing for durability. We're writing this review today, because it was the first time when we've had to approach the staff about being disappointed and the staff was immediately responsive to address our complaint. A mistake was made by an employee and when we approached them about it, they listened, while still maintaining their cheerful disposition. To me that's a testament of great customer service on top of all the other things we like about the store. read more

Specialized, knowledgeable and quality. Got a beautiful coat with the owner's help and even got a 30-yr-anniversary discount . Stumbled upon HG after trying Sporting Life, where the people know nothing and the manager doesn't care if you stay or go. read more

Current sale info about the pop-up store is misleading. The pop-up store has mostly kids stuff. Overpriced items that are not the desirable, even at 50% off. There is a pathetic (I can't think of another word) and tiny selection of adult clothing. Don't waste your precious time. Main store has mediocre selection with signs reading "regular price" prominently displayed all over. read more

I've written a positive review about this store in the past. But since then, I've had 3 different experiences shopping there where staff were unhelpful and apathetic about solving problems. Keep in mind, between my partner and I, we've spent thousands of dollars over the years on clothing, shoes, watch, and even a utility knife as it's the main store we go for outdoor products because we really do believe in supporting local businesses. They tend to have the same designer brands as Sporting Life up the street, but we would ALWAYS choose to buy the same item at Higher Ground because we always appreciated that they were a smaller business and liked that the staff were well informed. However, over the past 6 months we've noticed the service at Higher Ground has declined, where there's a large turnover of staff who don't know anything. We've had 3 instances during their periodic sale events where one staff member has told us that an item is on sale and then another expresses it's not when we get to the counter to check out. I'm not sure why they have so much trouble keeping track of their sale racks and should maybe consider a different system. Tonight was the last time I will shop in that store, since lately, it's just too frustrating. I had tried on a pair of pants that were on the 25% off rack and was there the previous night when the sales person told me it was on sale. Then tonight, the person checking me out said it wasn't. She called the salesperson to check on my story (because she didn't believe me) and that salesperson confirmed that she had told me it was on sale. But then, after all that waiting, she told me she still wasn't going to honour the discount. If this was the first time this happened, then I can understand. But similar service issues have happened an additional 2 other times. I ended up leaving and buying the pants at Sporting Life for full price, because I just don't want to give Higher Ground my business anymore. I've been shopping at this store since the 1990s when it was on the other side of Yonge. They've always been on the expensive side, but because it was such a nice place to go with great knowledgeable staff, I never minded paying a little more. But the quality of service has gone down, so I'm ready to give up and just go to Sporting Life which is a little closer to where we live and doesn't have the continued problems of sales people not knowing what to do or having the authority to deal with a situation of customer dissatisfaction. read more

Terrible customer service when dealing with the owner, Kevin Roher, about a coat that I purchased on a boxing day sale and then wished to return for refund two days later (after realizing that the coat was going to work for me). The staff person who helped me at the time of purchase was excellent, very helpful; however, he did not inform me at the time of payment that the coat would be "final sale" given the fact that it was a marked down price. This same staff person acknowledged to me when I came in to politely return my item that he may have neglected to tell me about the "final sale - no return" policy. He offered me store credit or to exchange the coat. This was a $381 purchase and I did not want to have a store credit for that amount when I really only wanted to purchase a winter coat, no other specialty gear. The staff person suggested that I speak to the owner, Kevin, when he returned from holidays. Our conversation was very unpleasant. I asked him for a refund, telling him that I would not have purchased the coat that day if I had known it was final sale. I really like the coat but had some hang ups about the pockets and cuffs, but I decided to make the purchase because my kids were with me and getting antsy to leave. I've never encountered this type of "final sale - no return" policy without being informed about it by a member of the sales team - anytime I've purchased something on final sale it has been made clear to me at the time of check out. I also suggested this policy is behind the times as no other retailer that I've dealt with has had such a restrictive policy (i.e. SAIL, MEC, Sporting Life). He indicated that I should have adopted an apologetic tone when asking for a refund because "I've made such a big mistake" in purchasing this coat (clearly at this store). At one point he called me "my dear" which I found patronizing and condescending. He said it was my mistake for not asking what the store's policy is on refunds. So now I am stuck with a coat that I really don't want because there is no way I am ever shopping at Higher Ground again after being treated so poorly by this owner, Kevin Roher. read more
